Episode 008 - The Hedge Fund Talmud Professor: A Conversation with Ari Bergmann Oct 09, 2017
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Ari Bergmann may be one of the most unique and iconoclastic interviewees imaginable. In many ways, he is a walking paradox: a prolific hedge fund principal who is also a prolific Torah scholar; a product of classical yeshiva institutions who embraces - and now teaches, at the Ivy Leagues no less! - academic Talmud study; a rationalist with deep appreciation for Judaism's esoteric wisdom.

Yet, to hear him tell it, there is no contradiction at all. Beyond mere "harmony" or "synthesis," Ari Bergmann insists on "consilience" - a symbiotic coupling of putative opposites that results in an "emergent experience." Certainly, his own life models this ideal, and he is bullish on others' abilities to reach this transcendent state in their own as well.

In this episode, Ari takes us through his childhood in Sao Palo, Brazil, his early education in the great Torah centers of America and Israel, his professional achievements on Wall Street, and ultimately his academic pursuits at Columbia University and beyond. Hedge Fund principal, rare Judaica collector, esoteric and exoteric Torah scholar, and now Ivy League professor...Ari has a story worth hearing and a message worth absorbing for every listener.

Episode 007 - The Senator: A Conversation with Joe Lieberman Oct 02, 2017
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Longtime Senator Joe Lieberman is one of the nation's most accomplished politicians, and also one of its most visible observant Jews. In this wide-ranging conversation, Lieberman cover a many topics, including: his childhood and grandmother's early Jewish influence; formative event like the elections of John F. Kennedy and the Martin Luther King Jr. march in Washington, D.C.; his own religious odyssey while at Yale University ("Sometimes you make big decisions that are really quite simple"); the therapeutic value of loss; pollster's Stanley Greenberg's "prophetic" advice; his shocking Senate victory; the question he has never been asked; the vice presidential campaign on the Al Gore ticket; the impact of his Sabbath observance and his book on that topic, The Gift of Rest (I think in the end that writing that book on Shabbat will be one of the most significant thing I've accomplished in my life."); what he's doing in his "retirement" (spoiler alert: A LOT); and his outlook on the future of the Jewish people ("I'm an optimist...I think the Jewish people is an eternal people.")

Appropriately, this is Episode #7, as Lieberman's signature book and proudest quality has been his Sabbath-observance.

Episode 006 - The Global Activist: A Conversation with Malcolm Hoenlein Sep 25, 2017
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Malcolm Hoenlein is the Executive Vice President of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. Beginning with his leadership at the forefront of the Soviet Jewry movement, Mr. Hoenlein has traveled the world advocating for oppressed and endangered Jews - and all minorities - for the past 50 years. As the head of the largest umbrella organization in the Jewish world, he has successfully balanced disparate interests and agendas by promoting a unifying agenda. A staunch defender of Israel, Mr. Hoenlein has met with presidents and world leaders in an attempt to consolidate support and publicize the righteousness of the pro-Israel cause.

In this episode, Mr. Hoenlein describes his personal background and ascension to his current position; relates some wonderful anecdotes of meetings with prominent religious and political leaders; and leaves us with a wonderfully inspiring closing message: "Not everybody can do everything, but everybody can do something to change the world."

Episode 005 - The Kosher Celebrity Chef: A Conversation with Jamie Geller Sep 18, 2017
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Jamie Geller grew up in a traditional Jewish home, but struggled to find her Jewish identity as she attended journalism school at NYU and made her way as a producer for CNN and HBO, working on such estimable shows as The Sopranos.

Jamie eventually blossomed as a Jewish woman and correspondingly shifted her creative talents towards the kosher cookbook industry. A self-professed culinary luddite as a newlywed, Jamie eventually distinguished herself by popularizing recipes that were tasty and presentable but also accessible to the average working person.

Along the way, Jamie also became a spokeswoman of sorts for aliyah (moving) to Israel, as she chronicled her own family's journey in real-time on YouTube and via her blog. Her content suite now includes a series of best-selling books, a website hosting thousands of recipes and stories and a vast variety of food- and Jewish-related content.

    Episode 004 - The 9/11 Survivor: A Conversation with Ari Schonbrun Sep 11, 2017
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Ari Schonbrun was on the 78th floor of Tower 1 in the World Trade Center, heading towards his Cantor Fitzgerald office on the 101st floor, on the morning of Tuesday, September 11th, 2001, when a blast shook the building and transformed his life. In this riveting discussion, Ari shares the story of his heroic efforts (my description!) on that morning, and what has changed for him in the years since. His book, Miracle and Fate on 78, published in 2011, outlines his story in great detail, and was the capstone of a years-long post-9/11 speaking odyssey. Having recently retired from Cantor, Ari now dedicates himself full-time to motivational speaking, writing and non-profit work.

Episode 003 - The Nobel Prize Economist: A Conversation with Professor Robert (Yisrael) Aumann Sep 04, 2017
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Robert (Yisrael) Aumann was born in pre-war Germany, moved with his family to New York and eventually ended up in Israel, where he has been a professor of economics for over 50 years at the Hebrew University, and founder of its Center for the Study of Rationality. Professor Aumann was awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in Economics for his pioneering work in the field of game theory.

In this enlightening conversation, Professor Aumann shares his early life story; explains (in layman terms) what "game theory" actually is, and which disciplines it connects to; and even shares what his favorite board game is! Of course, he also tells the wonderful story of receiving the Nobel Prize at a ceremony in Stockholme, Sweden, making a Hebrew blessing at the central banquet, and watching the Israeli flag fly high above his hotel there. Professor Aumann is surely a Jew You Should Know.

Episode 002 - The Jewish Renaissance Woman: A Conversation with Lori Palatnik Aug 27, 2017
    Show notes

Lori Palatnik has spent three decades in service of Jewish communities around North America and the world. Her most recent and most ambitious enterprise - the Jewish Women's Renaissance Project, often dubbed "Birthright for moms" - has revolutionized the Jewish adult education world, opening up opportunities to women (and now their husbands), and by extension their entire families, to new vistas of Jewish learning and experience.

JWRP's unique recipe comes in the form of partnerships with countless existing Jewish organizations - often several in a single city - including outreach programs, Federations and others.

Lori shares with us her personal life story and odyssey into committed Jewish life, her professional evolution, the charming story of JWRP's genesis over a brainstorming session at a private chalet in Utah, and her dreams for its expansion in the years to come.
