Episode 017 - The Super Bowl Lineman: A Conversation with Alan Veingrad Dec 18, 2017
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Alan Veingrad was the not-so-little engine that could. Standing at 6'5" and nearly 300 pounds, he was a raw but high-potential football player relegated to a Division II program for college, then cut by two NFL teams before finally getting his chance as a Green Bay Packer. He eventually went on to win a Super Bowl with the dynastic Dallas Cowboys of the early 1990's.

Along the way, Alan encountered Jews who reached out and cared, and found camaraderie among the small cadre of Jewish NFL players. After retiring, he deepened his Jewish bonds significantly, for the first time engaging in serious Jewish learning, going to Israel and traveling the world to speak about his unique "Jewish in the NFL" experience.

More recently, Alan has been working for AIPAC, translating the ethos of coaching and mentorship into a practical program that is training tomorrow's development leaders within that hallowed organization. His passion and competitive streak remain as powerful as ever.

Learn more about Alan Veingrad or book him to speak by visiting www.AlanVeingrad.com.

Episode 016 - The Shrek 2 Screenwriter: A Conversation with David Weiss Dec 11, 2017
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

David Weiss's road to Jewish observance and Hollywood success was not a straight one. Born in a sparsely Jewish California town, young David became attracted to the Church, and lived for years as a passionate - even evangelizing - Christian. In parallel, he employed his creative talents within this religious world, until eventually venturing more widely into Hollywood.

Meanwhile, several "chance" encounters - including one with a Jeish animator in Ireland - stirred David's Jewish soul, and he began a long trek home. Along the way, he enjoyed box office successes with movies like All Dogs Go to Heaven, Shrek 2, Rugrats Chanukah and more.

David takes us on a captivating and humorous journey, demonstrating at once why he is both a spiritual role model and exceptional Hollywood talent.

Episode 015 - The Radio Host: A Conversation with Nachum Segal Dec 04, 2017
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Nachum Segal was destined for radio. From his early childhood days announcing sports scores in the privacy of his home, to his collegiate moonlighting at Yeshiva University's campus radio station, he got an early start, and never looked back. His rich, mellifluous bass have served him faithfully as a host and as the MC of note at Jewish events over the years.

Nachum's career has now spanned nearly four decades, having spent 34 years at WFMU NY before branching out to launch his own independent network, the Nachum Segal Network (NSN).

JM in the AM, Nachum's signature morning show, has become a "must listen" Jewish communities in the NY/NJ area, and now more broadly with the advent of digital technologies.

It is a treat to "interview the interviewer," learning about his passion for this evolving medium and the influence he has had and should continue to have for years to come.

Episode 012 - The Jewish Renaissance Man: A Conversation with Charlie Harary Nov 06, 2017
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Charlie Harary is today one of the most sought-after religious and motivational speakers in the Jewish world. But he wasn't always religiously motivated or inspired himself. It took a special mentor to ignite his passion and propel him to "own" his own spiritual journey.

After time at Columbia Law School and a stint in "Big Law," Charlie moved through the worlds of venture capital and ultimately real estate investment. Simultaneously, he began volunteering for the youth group NCSY and developing his reputation as an inspiring speaker.

In this conversation, we cover Charlie's professional philosophies - including the "myth of balance," the "power of win-win business deals," and the value of "crowd-sourcing life" - as well as his personal and spiritual aspirations ("growth is about a maturation to material"). We also explore his media productions - including viral videos, a radio show and podcast, an upcoming book and a feature length film about G-d and spirituality. Charlie's interests are diverse and he brings his special passion for each subject to the fore in this enjoyable interview.

Episode 011 - The Jew in the City: A Conversation with Allison Josephs Oct 30, 2017
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Allison Josephs was eight years old when a personal tragedy sparked an existential crisis that lasted years, resolving itself through an intensive Jewish search. Flashing forward, Allison found herself an unwitting ambassador of Orthodox Judaism to the press and in the emerging environments of YouTube and social media. She formalized these efforts in an organizations, Jew in the City, featuring an annual Orthodox All Stars banquet and videos, but also behind-the-scenes advocacy efforts to improve the community and to assist those struggling to find their place in it.

In this interview, we discuss Allison's background, plus JITC's genesis and maturation moving beyond idealized projections, while maintaining a proud and positive stance. We also explore her celebrated relationship with TV celebrity - and neuroscientist - Mayim Bialik, who has become an observant Jewish spokeswoman of her own renown.

For those listening live, this podcast is being released in the week leading up to the Fifth Annual Orthodox Jewish All-Stars awards banquet, taking place November 5th, 2017 in New York City. See more here: http://jewinthecity.com/ojallstars/

Episode 010 - The Shabbat.com Founder: A Conversation with Ben Zion Klatzko Oct 23, 2017
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Rabbi Ben Zion Klatzko began his career as a 21-year-old Brooklyn rabbi. After suffering the tragic, untimely death of his younger brother Gavriel, a 28-year-old outreach rabbi in South Africa with a remarkable young footprint, Rabbi Ben Zion determined to do more, and moved with his growing family to Los Angeles to launch educational programs at UCLA. That venture soon expanded to USC and other So-Cal campuses, and ultimately to his role as North American Senior Manager for Olami, which brought him back to New York to oversee campus programs around the country.

In the interview, Rabbi Klatzko describes the legendary Shabbat table his family has since established, welcoming 60-100 Jews of all stripes every week...even posting tents in their backyard to accommodate the crowds! Ultimately this led to his creation of Shabbat.com, a premier Jewish social network, connecting host families with prospective Shabbat guests, as well as matching singles and offering a global Jewish community to its members.

Rabbi Klatzko shares his passion and future dreams in this wide-ranging conversation. And he freely shares his contact information so that anyone - not just world-famous scientists like the one he describes meeting - can get in touch.

Episode 009 - The South African Chief Rabbi and Shabbat Project Founder: A Conversation with Warren Goldstein Oct 16, 2017
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Rabbi Warren Goldstein was both the youngest and first native-born ever elected as Chief Rabbi of South Africa. In the thirteen years since assuming that post, he has engaged at every level of South African Jewish and civic society. His crowning achievement perhaps has been the Shabbos (or Shabbat) Project; what began as an initiative to encourage South Africans to observe one Shabbat all together on a single Friday-Saturday, has mushroomed into a global grassroots movement spanning over 1,300 in 95 countries and 10 languages.

In this interview, Rabbi Goldstein discusses the Shabbat Project, of course, but also describes his ascension to the Chief Rabbinate, meeting Nelson Mandela, thoughts about Apartheid and other insights into the state of the Jewish world.
