    Episode 056 - The Aish.com Founder: A Conversation with Nechemia Coopersmith Nov 19, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Growing up as a teenager in Toronto, Nechemia Coopersmith was always a truth-seeker. So when his older brother Eric went off to study in Israel, he naturally determined to learn more, and ultimately discovered a similar path, counter-cultural for its time but authentic in its fidelity to ancient roots.

The Internet era dawned as Coopersmith was in the middle of a career in Jerusalem of formal and informal education and outreach. Though completely ignorant of its inner workings, he intuited its immense potential to reach Jews worldwide on a scale and in a scope never before possible.

Educating himself, gaining the blessing of legendary Aish HaTorah founder Rabbi Noach Weinberg, assembling a small team, and securing a half-million-dollar seed grant from a Los Angeles philanthropist, Coopersmith began building what became one of the highest trafficked Jewish sites on the World Wide Web. Today Aish.com services over 1 million visitors each month, and Coopersmith harbors ambitious designs to bring this "lean and efficient" media staple to the next level.

Episode 055 - The Mishpacha Publisher and HIPA Founder: A Conversation with Eli Paley Nov 12, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Eli Paley grew up with rich family history - the son of a survivor and a long-standing scion of Jerusalem aristocracy. Early love of Torah story fused with business interests, and Eli found himself at the helm of the fledgling Mishpacha Magazine, which he ultimately catalyzed into a media empire. In more recent years, he founded the Haredi Institute for Public Affairs, a multi-disciplinary think tank aimed at offering research-driven solutions to this population's most vexing challenges. In that role, he is helping change the conversation - and the perception - surrounding a prominent and growing demographic, and with it, Israeli society at large.

Episode 054 - The Kesher Yehudi Founder: A Conversation with Tzili Schneider Nov 06, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Few individuals have made the impact on Israeli society - and in particular on healing the divisions between the religious and secular populations - than has Tzili Schneider. Born into a Chassidic family in the ultra-Orthodox enclave of Mea She'arim, Tzili nevertheless grew up amidst incredible warmth and inclusiveness, in an open home that often found guests sleeping in her own bed!

In time, Tzili established an organization that has paired thousands of people to study together, and most notably has developed programs within the elite pre-military academies with outstanding results. She continues to dream, hoping to establish mixed community centers to promote dialogue and connection, and to expand her vision across the world.

    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Moshe Kaplan took a circuitous route to the Land of Israel: an acclaimed physician and medical author specializing in complementary medicine in San Francisco, CA, he eventually found his way back to both Judaism and the Jewish Homeland.

In the years since, he has championed unity among Jews, and written several books aimed at this goal. Now, he runs the Be A Mentsch project, a series of initiatives promoting intra-Jewish dialogue and the performance of kind deeds without regard for differences in observance or politics.

    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Israeli society comprises many different constituencies, and the complexities that emerge are legion. Religion and state issues, conflicting values around the army and the Zionist project in general. All of this and more often silos the population, and fractures a nation that could benefit immensely from solidarity.

Since the 1970s Gesher has stepped into this breach, creating initiatives and programs that promote dialogue, understanding and unique solutions to Israel's thorniest internal challenges. Its long-serving Chairman of the Board, Daniel Goldman, has the passion and optimism needed to drive the organization forward. Hear his story of professional achievement and dedication to Jewish unity in this episode.

Episode 051 - The Ayelet HaShachar Founder: A Conversation with Shlomo Ra'anan {Plus bonus conversation with Riki Siton} Oct 16, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

With a rich family background of survivors and passionate Jews, the backdrop for Shlomo Ra'anan's revolution in Israeli society was set decades ago. Drawing on this heritage, Ra'anan has made it his life mission to supply every Israeli kibbutz, moshav or town with Jewish resources and infrastructure. Placing rabbinic families in communities, building synagogues, and establishing partner-study programs for over 10,000 people, he has bridged gaps and brought Jewish connection in ways few others have matched. Ayelet Hashchar functions now in 167 locations around Israel, with more on the horizon.

Riki Siton is a Bnai Brak-based mother of eight who somehow also runs the women's division and the Chavruta (study partner) program. She herself has befriended a famous Yediot Acharonot columnist, and their ongoing - albeit unlikely - relationship itself has made news, and forms a template for the mission of Jewish unity the organization represents.

Episode 050 - The Chareidi Education Pioneer: A Conversation with Menachem Bombach Oct 08, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Menachem Bombach was raised in an extremely religious neighborhood in Jerusalem, but jokes that he "immigrated" to Israel at the age of 20, which is when he first began speaking Hebrew, in addition to his native Yiddish!

A lover of people, and frustrated by a perceived lack of educational opportunities in Israeli ultra-Orthodox society, Bombach became the ultimate reformer from within - working with established and mainstream families to enhance academic learning and disrupt the cycles of poverty often present in many such communities.

Along the way, he taught himself Hebrew and English, earned multiple degrees, opened several schools, received education prizes from the Israeli government, helped pioneer a Chareidi division at the famed Mandel Leadership Institute, and gone "viral" for his Yom Hazikaron (Israel Memorial Day) ceremony with Chassidic pupils. Episode 049 - The Leket Israel Founder: A Conversation with Joseph Gitler Sep 23, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Joseph Gitler grew up as a nice Jewish boy, and a Zionist, in Manhattan, NY and later Teaneck, NJ. His career path as a lawyer, first in the U.S. and then, after making aliyah, in Israel, was proceeding nicely, until he noticed a gaping void in the Israeli charitable sector: the absence of a food bank or food rescue and recovery program, which exist all over the world.

Leaving his career as an attorney, Gitler threw himself into the task of remedying that problem, and in the years since he has built a towering edifice of charity, benefiting the environment, thousands of volunteers, 210 recipient organizations, and of course the nation's poor.

With a $15 million annual budget, Leket distributes fresh produce and prepared meals with a wholesale value of over $50 million dollars, and a retail value much beyond that. In a single year, they deliver 45 million pounds of fruits and vegetables and 3 million cooked meals, utilizing over 60,000 volunteers and a professional workforce over 100 strong.

Visit www.Leket.org to learn more about this amazing organization, the man who founded it, and ways you can visit, volunteer and get involved.

Episode 047 - The Beit Issie Shapiro Founder: A Conversation with Naomi Stuchiner Sep 05, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

While still living in South Africa, Issie Shapiro was already an activist for people with special needs, raising funds for their housing and care. When he realized a lifelong dream to make aliyah - following his daughter Naomi, who had married an Israeli and settled in the Holy Land - he intended to perpetuate that passion in his new home country.

However, tragedy struck, and Issie passed away while on vacation in the United States, leaving his family - now all in Israel - bereaved, but driven to express his dream.

Ultimately, Naomi, a social worker, established a center - Beit Issie Shapiro - in his name, and its services quickly tagged it as a trailblazer in the field. Its impact spread throughout the country, influencing legislation and helping change the status of people with disabilities in Israel.

Today, the BIS directly impacts 8,000 people each year, and influences over half a million globally through its advocacy and training in partnership with the UN and many individual countries. The beautiful facility in Ranaana houses its core programs, and served as a wonderful backdrop for this inspiring conversation.
