Episode 066 - The Entrepreneurship Guru: A Conversation with Noam Wasserman Feb 04, 2019
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Noam Wasserman lives in Boston - where he was a longtime, wildly popular Harvard Business School professor - but works in Los Angeles. And while he regularly traverses the country, he also straddles the dual worlds of business development and Jewish commitment.

As an academic, Wasserman has researched the challenges faced by founders of new enterprises, and shared his findings with thousands of students, among them many founders-in-waiting. Along the way he has authored several books, including a volume titled "Life is a Startup," applying these traditional business lessons to broader human contexts.

Ever community-minded, Wasserman was the founding chairman of the board of a new Jewish high school in Boston, and advises individuals, companies, and non-profits on the healthy practices that will enable them to survive and thrive beyond their nascent "founding" stages.

Episode 065 - The Constructor of Social Good: A Conversation with Shea Rubenstein Jan 28, 2019
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

It might be easier to list the things Shea Rubenstein isn't than those he is. A construction professional and real estate developer, Shea is also a veritable chessed (kindness) machine. Under the aegis of his JCC of Marine Park (Brooklyn), he has launched an astonishing number and array of social services, including job training and placement, mentorship, food rescue, anti-hunger programs, computer proficiency clinics and much more. He is also a musician - instrumentalist, composer and singer - to boot; his most recent album is a collection of Yiddish songs dedicated to Holocaust survivors, which he distributed free of charge to this cherished but aging population.

Shea organizes conferences for business professionals of all stripes, and we sat down in November 2018 at the Hilton Hotel in Staten Island, capping off the day-long TribeWorks event. This gathering was unique in that it coalesced over a dozen Jewish job service organizations, leveraging their joint resources and connections to present exceptional speakers and programming to several hundred eager participants.

Shea Rubenstein is a force in business and philanthropy, but at his core is the ultimate mentsch, generous with his time, resources and expertise in supporting many emerging entrepreneurs and others along their respective journeys.

Episode 064 - The Atlanta Builder: A Conversation with R. Emanuel Feldman Jan 21, 2019
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

When a young, newly minted rabbi Emanuel Feldman stepped off the train in Atlanta, Georgia in 1952, he could not have imagined that he would change the trajectory of that Jewish community, or of his own family legacy. But a nearly 40-year rabbinical career there, augmented by a national leadership profile as educator of Tradition Journal and author of best-selling Jewish literature, cemented Rabbi Feldman as one of the most influential American rabbis of the twentieth century.

Now living in Israel and still writing, speaking and educating even decades after "retirement," Rabbi Feldman delights our listeners with his charming anecdotes and stories of a life in service of the Jewish People.

Episode 063 - The MobileEye Engineer: A Conversation with Mois Navon Jan 14, 2019
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Mois Navon grew up surfing in southern California. But a series of fortuitous encounters led him to a richer Jewish life, aliyah (immigration) to Israel, and ultimately involvement in a small tech startup called MobileEye. Sixteen years after joining that enterprise, it boasted the largest exit - a 15.3 billion dollar sale to Intel - in Israel's robust startup history.

Along the way, Mois also became the "rabbi of MobileEye," an ordained rabbi and prolific Torah teacher, as well as a public speaker for visiting groups learning about the Jewish State's entrepreneurial culture.

Episode 061 - The MonitHer Founder: A Conversation with Yehudit Abrams Dec 31, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Yehudit Abrams would have been a most unlikely candidate to be living and working in Jerusalem, but nothing about her life journey has been ordinary. Born to a devoutly Quaker mother in Idaho, as early as age ten Abrams began her restless search for spiritual truth. An astounding series of events led her to a Boise synagogue, and to Jewish mentors who nurtured her burgeoning interest in Judaism.

Abrams was also a brilliant mind, and at various times studied medicine, engineering and, of course, ranching!! A gifted cellist as well, her unprecedented variety of talents and interests make for a story both colorful and inspiring.

In recent years, Abrams pioneered MonitHer, a state-of-the-art detection apparatus that, when launched, will dramatically improve the monitoring of early-stage breast cancers and provide invaluable aid to diagnosticians and physicians in the field.

For her latest work, Abrams was awarded a prestigious grant from WeWork, and is enrolled at the Mass Challenge accelerator. Hear about her dramatic personal odyssey and inventive achievements in this week's episode!

Episode 060 - The Word Press Guru: A Conversation with Miriam Schwab Dec 24, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Miriam Schwab's life story reflects that of many olim (immigrants): ambivalent, halting beginnings eventually give way to a mature and successful Israeli life, filled with professional accomplishment and the pursuit of big dreams.

Growing up in Toronto, Canada, Miriam was always enamored with "tech" - early computers and the various coding languages that powered them. Eventually she found a home in the Word Press community, becoming one of its greatest experts, and among the only females with that designation.

A web development company she started earned her a steady living, but she had designs on something much more ambitious: creating lighting fast, impenetrably secure and environmentally friendly web services. Her new company, Stratic, does just that, and she is quickly driving it towards broad commercial viability.

In this wide-ranging conversation, we cover the topics of the vicissitudes of aliyah; the Israeli - and Jerusalem - startup scene; the challenges faced by women - and particularly religious women - as founders; and much more. Miriam is brilliant but unpretentious, ambitious but warm, and a sterling model of the new economy in the Jewish State.

Episode 059 - The Mother of Naftali, H"yd: A Conversation with Racheli Fraenkel Dec 17, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

It was 3 AM on an otherwise ordinary Thursday night when Racheli Fraenkel and family received a knock at their door that would change their lives. Their eleventh-grade son, Naftali, had been returning home from his boarding school along with a friend, Gilad Shaar, but never showed up. Within hours authorities realized that these two boys, along with a third - Eyal Yifrach - had been captured by Hamas terrorists.

The 18 days that followed were a whirlwind of activity, with the entire Jewish world gripped by the news of the missing "Three Boys." #BringBackOurBoys became a rallying cry for prayer gatherings, social media campaigns and a nearly unprecedented outpouring of love and display of Jewish unity.

Tragically, the three youngsters, it was later learned, had been murdered in the first moments of their capture. But the actions and sentiments their story triggered profoundly impacted the Jewish world.

Racheli Fraenkel is a private, soft-spoken woman, a Torah teacher and mentor to many other women as a yoetzet halacha (Jewish legal advisor in areas of family law). Through this experience, however, she has chosen to share widely and publicly of her own process in navigating this profound loss. Along the way, she has inspired - though she herself disdains the term - thousands of listeners and observers. Her dignity, humility, honesty and vulnerability have drawn people to hear and learn from her. Jews You Should Know listeners are now privileged with that same opportunity.

Episode 058 - The Diaspora Affairs Journalist: A Conversation with Zvika Klein Dec 10, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

In our final of the journalism mini-series in the Israel Live Podcast Tour, we encounter Zvika Klein, Diaspora reporter for Makor Rishon. Zvika has spent years covering the Jewish world that exists beyond the Holy Land's borders, and bringing those stories to its denizens within.

Zvika gained notoriety - and a viral YouTube credit - when he filmed himself walking for ten hours through the streets of Paris wearing a kippah (Jewish head covering), documenting the anti-Semitic sentiment he experienced.

But that was one of only many fascinating stories he has brought to readers around the world. Our wide-ranging discussion, from his apartment in the heart of Jerusalem, touched on a variety of complex issues facing the country and its relationships to Jews outside of Israel. Worth a listen for anyone who cares about the Jewish State and values its place in the firmament of world Jewry.
