Sheryl Schopfer emailed: "Dear Marc Gunn,

I am a newly caught-up listener, having found the Irish & Celtic music Podcast last summer and been listening to the entire back catalog over the past year, along with the Renaissance Festival Podcast (how I originally found your numerous podcast projects) and the Celtic Christmas Podcast. I greatly appreciate what you do with the podcast, airing music of wide-ranging musicians I would not discover otherwise.

You asked in this most recent episode (the first I listened to when it was actually released; I really did just catch up) whether we listen with others or alone. I share podcasts and individual episodes I like, but no one I know listens to podcasts as much as I do. So, I have taken to sharing individual songs with people, and noting that I discovered them through this podcast. As for what I do while listening (another question of yours), this is usually working on art for a comic page or going for a walk.

Anyway, thank you so much for your podcasts and for the music they introduce to listeners like myself! :-)"

Mathew Solomon emailed some photos: "A Bostonian expat cooking in Istanbul while listening to your podcast. Hey Marc!

I've been listening to your podcast for about a year now. I am not Irish by any means, but traditional Irish music has always held a special place in my heart. Its warmth, human spirit, and general optimism despite hardship is a source of comfort and inspiration. My hometown of Boston has a rich history of Irish music, and one of my favorite local haunts is the Burren in Somerville, a traditional Irish pub with regular Irish music featuring local and international artists.

Currently I am making a new home for myself abroad, in Istanbul, and your podcast has been a reliable way to help me feel grounded and at home in this new, exhilarating city. I am an avid home cook, and I always look forward to a new episode to give me more wonderful music to listen to while cooking. Below are pictures of some traditional Turkish meals I have cooked while listening to your podcast, and the view from my balcony from which Irish music can be heard emanating.

I am also a musician, but not one who would fit naturally into the traditional Irish folk band. Anyone who wants to help me find a way to fit trombone into an Irish folk sound, give me a call!

Thank you for spreading such excellent music; I just finished the latest episode (#520) and I am already looking forward to the next one.

    Cheers, sláinte, and serefe!"

I missed this congrats from Jarrod Reynolds: "Hey Marc, Congrats on the 500th episode. I highly enjoy the podcast. One of my ancestral lines is Irish so Irish music has a special place in my heart, and the fact I've been to scotland, makes it that much more special. I was wondering if you had any suggestions for instrumental irish harp artists that specialize in jigs and reels. Slainte"

Domenico Rossi emailed a photo: "Hi Marc! It's Domenico here, from Italy!

I'm just listening to your podcast (ep. 517) while I'm finishing up details of my final thesis. You know how it works: each time you write even a single letter, images go everywhere, and you have to put them again in the correct place. And, of course, there always are small changes to do... and your wonderful podcast is here to help me!

Since I've become a patreon some months ago I can hear the episodes some days before usual, and it's a great way to start the week! (or also finish it, by listening to them again and again!)

    Thanks for your work

    God bless you

    Slainte"

    Joe Christensen emailed: "Hi Marc.

I've been listening and subscribing to your podcast for a long while. You have been, for a while now, asking what we are doing while we listen. I don't have a photo for you, but I am usually grading physics homework. Although they are unaware of it, I am quite sure the students appreciate that my mood is jaunty while I grade their work.

Speaking of students, which is my actual reason for writing, during the pandemic, I have been recording and posting my lectures so that students who are in quarantine, are caring for others who are sick, or are simply cautious about bringing the virus home to others can keep up with my class. Inspired by my gratitude to you for diligently maintaining the practice of including timestamps in all of your show notes (I can't tell you how helpful that has been), I started time-stamping my 50-minute lectures. Many students have expressed to me their gratitude for my effort in that regard and I wanted to share that gratitude with you. Your patience and attention to detail has benefits not just for those of us who listen and buy music we hear, but also has secondary benefits to those your listeners also interact with.

You are positively impacting in many ways.

Speaking of that, I am also grateful whenever you stand up for the women of Irish music, the LGBT community, and your broader support of a variety of people and cultures. Thank you!

Happy holidays. I hope you and your family are safe and healthy."

I hope you had a great summer. It's officially over for me. And I'm thrilled. Because this means I get to put my focus back on promoting the podcast and creating music. The things I love.

I'm already finishing up my next album called Selcouth. I have some fun songs on it. Both traditional songs as well as my fusion of sci fi and fantasy. I should have another song to share in a few weeks.

I one final question before we continue the show. Do you listen to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast by yourself or with others? Let me know.

Gaelynn Lea Tressler joined Patreon and emailed: "Thanks for making this podcast!

Hello! I am a new (but huge!) fan of this podcast. My husband and I started listening to Trip to the Cottage's back catalog (from Radio Kerry) way back in March 2020 but it went off the air and they recently seem to have taken down all the old episodes, alas! So we needed a new Celtic music fix for our nightly Guinness by the fire! :) This is a great show. Thanks for making it, and I am so pumped there are over 500 episodes to go back to as a new listener!

On a side note, I am a fiddler/songwriter and I have done some live-looped renditions of traditional Celtic tunes like The Parting Glass, Swallowtail Jig, Rites of Man, and others. Take care and keep up the great work! Truly"

Peter Bengtson emailed a photo: "Hi Mark, I did go on Podcast Awards and voted for the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast for the 2 categories you mentioned.

I was out this morning doing one of my adjacent neighborhood walks. I was listening to episode #517, Women of Summer. A very enjoyable episode! I covered 5.35 miles, gained only 162 feet elevation gain (pretty flat). It took me 2 hours. I had given up on finding something interesting to photograph. Then I found:"

Woodland Folk sent a bunch of pictures over the past month. I'm gonna include many of them in the shownotes and wrote: "A calming, summer hour of Voices and melody...Thank u"

I have a very special request. In order to play bands on this podcast, I have to have their permission. In the past, I needed their permission for each individual album that they released.

That's rather confusing for most artists. So, I recently updated my permission form. When an artist submits their music now, That permission form is good until 2025. So all new music they submit can be played on the podcast.

I am slowly reaching out to past artists on this show who have new music. But of course, there are hundreds of artists who were played on this podcast.

If one of your favorite musicians has released a new album in the past five years, can you do us all a favor and ask them to submit their permission to the podcast. After you email them, drop me an email and tell me the name of the band. I will reach out to them and see if I can get their new music on the show.

THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST!

It is because of you that I release this show almost every week. But I want to let you know about a big change this coming to the Song Hengers on Patreon.

I started Song Henge in 2006. It was a way to support the podcast when amazing services like Patreon were not available. I sent Song Hengers an album per month of free MP3s from some of the artists on the show. I released 168 of those albums over the past 15 years thanks to the generosity of the musicians on this show.

When I started the Patreon page, I continued that feature for everyone who pledged $5 or more per episode. There are over 60 albums currently available for Patrons.

However, the world seems to be moving away from MP3s. So I decided to discontinue that service at the end of this year. It's time for a change.

I still want something special for Song Hengers. That has finally come. Starting in August, Song Hengers will get a talk-free episode, much like the Sleepytime episode that was released in May. I'll introduce the show, you can listen to the music straight through for about an hour, then I'll remind listeners to look up the artists.

Each episode will also include complete shownotes and chapters so you can easily skip around to the artists you enjoy, just like regular episodes. Because I DO want you to keep visiting these artists. But it'll be much more music focused.

You can become a generous Patron of the Podcast on Patreon at SongHenge.com.

    Peter Bengtson emailed: "Hi Marc,

Thanks for the personal message welcoming me to the magazine & Podcast. I only bumped into the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast a couple of weeks ago. I'm retired and listen to music quite a lot. I started out listening to folk & bluegrass music. Sometime in the 90s I sort of switched to classical music and opera.

The Covid restrictions have pushed me into taking long walks every day. I live in Tucson AZ, so these days I have to start walking at sunrise (5:30) these days. I usually walk for about 2 hours. Yesterday I listened to your Celtic Women #503 on the first half of the walk. The second half to Aria Code (opera). On the drive home I listened to Symphony Hall on SeriusXM. I enjoyed all three.

I really don't like "recurring donations" If you are a tax deductible organization with a Tax identification number, I can make a donation from my charitable account. If you are not a tax deductible organization, I can send you a check.

I'm looking forward to reading the Celtic Music Magazine and listening to your podcast."

I'm listening to the #509 while trying to organize the rest of my year activities, in a cold night here in Tandil, Argentina. I always loved celtic sounds. When I listened to your podcast for the first time last year I immediately liked it. It's wonderful!

    Thank you! ¡Muchas gracias! ¡Saludos!"

I'd like to do more of those. So if you have a story that you'd like to share about a song, from a gig, or maybe even just a piece of Celtic history that you love. Drop me an email at marc@marcgunn.com. Put "Pub Story" in the show subject. Tell me about your story. Maybe I'll ask you to record your story for the show.

Sean Topkok emailed a photo: "Happy Father's Day, Marc

I remember when your daughter was first born. You ask what we are doing while listening to the Irish and Celtic Podcast. I listen several times throughout the week, but my favorite time is when I walk my kayak upriver in Fairbanks, Alaska, and paddle back to my neighborhood. This usually takes about three hours total, so I enjoy listening to all the great artists featured in your podcast. Thanks for continuing to introduce me to various groups and keep up the great work.

PS: You can see my tattoo of the Irish flag in the photo."

Dennis McLaughlin emailed from Boise, Idaho: "I just wanted to send a shout out about this week's podcast. I recently became a $5 an episode patron after just being a listener for a while. As I sat listening to this week's music it was a rainy day here in Boise Idaho and the music was perfect! I picked up some new artists to follow (Eira, Beth Patterson, and Thomas Patrick Kenny) as well.

I am a musician and have played drums with our local pipes and drums bands and always appreciate the great independent artists that play at our local Celtic festival which has unfortunately been canceled last year and looks like this year as well.

I also maintain the website for the Western USA MacLachlan Clan.

Thanks for all you do concerning things Celtic music, pubs and travel."

John Pomeroy emailed: "Hi Mark, greetings from the east coast of Canada. I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your podcast each week. As the music plays and I come across a song that gets into my head I jot down the time and head over to iTunes to download it. I have a pretty good playlist put together!

I often listen to the Irish and Celtic Music podcast when I work on my genealogy research. My father's roots are deep in Cape Breton and the west coast of Scotland before that. I often think about what my ancestors' lives were like when I listen to the music on your podcast. In my research I came across a great photo on the Isle of Rum in the Inner Hebrides. It shows a woman touching a large rock called the "Emigrants Stone." I thought that would be a great title for one of your podcasts dedicated to those Irish and Scots who were forced from their homes and scattered to the many corners of the world. In any case, thanks for the work that you do and keep it up! Slainte!"

Chris Streeper emailed a couple a pictures from Medina, OH: "Marc, My name is Chris Streeper. I make my living as an Over the Road Truck Driver, what they call in Europe & Ireland a "Tramper." I am always in search of good content to help fill my 11-14 hr day on the road. Recently I found your podcast am very grateful to be able to listen to great Irish & Celtic music throughout my day. I began listening at episode #496 and have been working through the back catalog. It has indeed been a much needed catharsis for me. Thank to you and all the artists who make this show possible. Sláinte,

P.S. Attached are a couple pictures of me enjoying my pipe in my truck while I listen to the podcast."
