Danny emailed: "dear Marc First off thank you for all you do for Irish and Celtic independent musicians. I have been featured myself a couple of times with my old band Gaelic Fury but I have since been playing as Danny's Gone Rogue or simply Danny McDade where I do vocals (with the help of a harmony pedal) play guitar, rack a harmonica and play the Bodhran with a reverse drum kick. But I wanted to say i listen to you in my improvised gym in the basement shared by my son. We call it the YMCA Young McDade's Covid Avoidance Gym. Thanks and hope you have a happy Christmas."

Submit Your Music Jan 01, 2022
    Show notes

Would you like your music played on the largest podcast for Celtic music in the world?

The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast is the largest free Celtic radio show of independent Irish & Celtic music since 2005. It won "Best Podsafe Music" in 2009, 2010, and 2017 in the annual Podcast Awards. It is one of the top music podcasts on iTunes and was featured on iTunes several times. It is hosted by Marc Gunn, a Celtic singer and one of the leading promoters of indie Celtic music online since 1999.

Do you want your music played on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast?

The podcast gives preference to more traditional Celtic music (songs and tunes). However, I feature all styles of Celtic music from ballads and tunes, bagpipes to Celtic rock, the one exception is Celtic New Age.

This permission form works for all of Marc Gunn's podcasts including:

    1. Irish & Celtic Music Podcast

    2. Pub Songs & Stories podcast,

    3. Celtic Christmas Podcast.

    IMPORTANT
    • If your digital album is currently on Amazon or Bandcamp, you do not need to send music. I will purchase it if it fits the format of the show.

    • If your album is a pre-release, remember ID3 Tags. Please tag your albums with your band name, album, and track names. Please send MP3s only. If you're ripping from iTunes, make sure you adjust the default from iTunes ACC files to MP3s.

    • I no longer accept CDs. My goal is to make help musicians make money. Sending me a CD goes against that. Read more.

    • If you want to follow up with a previous submission, then contact me.

    • Deadlines: Any non-Christmas release after November 1 may not be played on the podcast until the following year.

That's it. Are you ready to go? Click this link to submit your music.

Once your permission form is completed, please click here for directions on how to submit music.

    FAQ Jan 01, 2022
    Show notes

You should play… I need permission from every artist that I play on the podcast. If there's an artist you love who hasn't appeared on the podcast before, please email them. Ask them to complete the permission form and submit their music to the show. How do artists submit music to the podcast?

It's easier than ever. Just complete this form.

If you have multiple older releases, you are welcome to put all of those album names in the name category.

Why do you need permission to play my music?

By completing the submission form, you understand that I cannot pay royalties for music played in the podcast.

Do I need to send in music?

Probably not. If you're music fits the format of the show, then I will buy your music on Amazon or Bandcamp. You do not need to send any music to me.

If you are uncertain if your music fits the format, you are welcome to email me music for consideration.

If you have a pre-release, then yes, please feel free to send digital music. I will do my best to get on the show before the official release of the album.

Why don't artists get paid to be featured on the podcast?

Podcasts are not like streaming radio. The standard royalty rate for streaming radio is like 0.005% or something like that.

For podcasts, it is the same as when someone sells a song. That standard royalty rate is 9.1 cents per song per download.

Each hour-long episode of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast features about 16 songs. The show gets over 14,000 downloads of each episode. That means if I were to pay each artist the standard royalty rate, it would cost $20,384 per episode. The podcast earns $482 per episode (as of March 2020).

If I could afford to pay royalties to the artists, I would. Instead, I donate a percentage of my income to Celtic non-profits.

How do you to make it worthwhile for musicians to be featured?

I am a full-time musician too. I know how hard it is for musicians to make money. I know how easy it is for musicians to waste money on promotion. That's why I offer free promotion for you. I don't even accept CDs. I also buy music from artists instead of asking them to submit music.

Since the beginning, I have emphasized the importance of supporting the artists featured in the podcast whether through buying CDs, downloads, and swag and seeing shows. I consider it extremely important that musicians be compensated and I harp on (pun intended) that idea in EVERY episode.

As a result, I've heard from numerous musicians who've told me about how well their albums have sold because of the podcast. I also get regular emails from listeners saying, I bought this or that album.

I also advertise the podcast and include Facebook links for each episode to make it easier for fans to find bands. I also do occasional special features of bands.

Why does the podcast make money?

It would be easier to answer this questions if the podcast was completely not-for-profit. I was young and single when I started it. In the beginning, I just wanted it to cover my expenses. I didn't really care if I made money. That's about all it did.

Now, I have a wife and two young daughters (11 and 6 years old) at home. I'm a stay-at-home dad. My work week has gone from about 16 hour work days, 7 days a a week to about 25 hours a week of actual work time for both my music AND the podcast. I have too many ideas and not enough time to implement them.

I do not have time to run a podcast. The only way I can make it happens it by making it my "job". As with any job, I have to get paid to do it. If I could not earn money from the podcast, I would have to stop creating it.

Do artists earn any money from the podcast?

    Yes. A little bit.

The podcast is syndicated on several streaming radio stations and terrestrial radio stations as well. Those stations are required to pay royalties to Soundexchange or the Performance Rights Organizations (ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC)

I buy most albums from artists. I also encourage my listeners to support artist by buying music.

Do you keep all of the money that the podcast earns?

    No, I do not.

I'm like you. I wish I could pay you royalties for music earned. I looked at numerous ideas. I decided that the easiest way was to use the money to promote Celtic culture and music. I donate 10% of all the income earned through Patreon to Celtic non-profits. I also donate about 30% of compilation album sales to Celtic non-profits. To date, I've given away $25,000.

Many of these donations go to non-profit Celtic festivals. It works quite well in fact. My donation helps to promote the podcast which promotes the artists in the podcast AND of course, it also helps the festival hire more Celtic musicians and make their events great. It's a win-win!

I also have a LOT of expenses that are directly associated with the podcast. Here are some the monthly expenses associated with running this podcast (as of June 2017):

    • MP3 Hosting $30 per month
    • Mailing list $60 per month
    • High-speed internet $90 per month
    • Advertising $250 per month
    • Audio Editor $200 per month
    • Graphics designer $200 per month

    Total = $830 per month

Plus, there are numerous miscellaneous expenses I must hire on a nearly monthly basis, including:

    • Web designers
    • Computer repair
    • Graphic designer
    • WordPress technician
    • Business card printing
    • Sticker printing
    • Banners for festivals

The remainder of the money pays for my time in producing the show. I spend between 10-20 hours per week creating the podcast and promoting it. The money helps me continue to produce this podcast while still feeding, clothing, and housing my wife, 2 daughters, 3 cats and 2 mice.

Why not get a real job?

One of my strongest skills is internet marketing. Numerous people have suggested I go into marketing as a profession. That idea disgusts me. I love Celtic music. I love my Celtic heritage. I LOVE that I have the skill to help indie Celtic bands gain greater recognition. I want to do that.

I would rather be struggling, poor, and helping my fellow musicians bring great Celtic music to the world!

Why do you focus on indie Celtic bands?

When I started playing Celtic music in 1999 with the Brobdingnagian Bards, I struggled to get our music heard. We were not "traditional Irish music". We were not Celtic rock. We were in a realm all our own, and we were shunned.

I started the Celtic Music Magazine and then the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast to give other indie Celtic bands and artists an opportunity to be heard. Most Celtic radio programs like the amazing Thistle & Shamrock, focus on the music from Ireland and Scotland, or Celtic classics in the U.S. like The Clancy Brothers or The Chieftains.

That's awesome. But in every part of the world, you will find incredible Celtic music. It might not sound like something from Compass Records. Often, it fuses local sounds with traditional Celtic music. This music is largely ignored by most Celtic radio programs.

Yes, I got permission from several Celtic record labels to play their music on the podcast. But those labels have money. They don't need MY help. But those small bands from Texas, Georgia, Colorado, Washington, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, and yes also, Ireland and Scotland. Those are the ones who need help being heard.

My goal is to give these artists a voice.

How to Cancel Your Patreon Pledge

    WELCOME TO CELTIC MUSIC

    * Helping you celebrate Celtic culture through music. I am Marc Gunn. I'm a musician and podcaster. I share my love of Irish and Celtic music from around the globe with you. I want to introduce you to some amazing Celtic bands and musicians. The artists in this show need your support. You can do that by buying their music or telling a friend about the band you found. You can find a link to all of the artists, along with show times and chapters for each song when you visit our website at celticmusicpodcast.com. You can also support this podcast on Patreon.

Today is the Celtic Top 20 songs and tunes of 2021. The music picked for this show was by Your Votes. You will note that there are actually 22 tracks this time.

Yup. You get bonus music this time because one of my tracks made the top 20. While I include it in the show, I don't consider it as one of the Top 20 songs. That said, there were a couple ties at the end of the show. And thus, you get even more music this time.

    NEW IN 2022

CHANGES TO THE CELTIC TOP 20 FOR 2022 I made some changes to the Celtic Top 20 for 2022. Yes. I still want and need your votes so we can create another amazing "best of" episode. It is now easier than ever to vote. Just select the tracks that you love the best. However, you will need to be a Patron of the Podcast to cast a vote.

Another change for the new year is I am creating a Best of 2022 playlist on Spotify. I will update it every week starting two weeks after the first show launches in the new year.

My hope is to help promote these amazing Celtic bands and musicians on the largest streaming music platform out there.

ARE YOU A MUSICIAN WITH A STORY TO SHARE? I am planning out the spring season of Pub Songs & Stories. Pub Songs & Stories is a Virtual Public House for musicians to share the stories and inspiration behind their music. Do you have or know a good story to share on our companion podcast?

Stories can be about songs or tunes, from a gig, a piece of Celtic history, or anything that might be paired with a song or tune. Drop me an email. Put "Pub Story" in the show subject. Tell me your story. Maybe I'll ask you to record your story for the show. I'm planning only 10 episodes. So email me soon. And make sure you subscribe at PubSong.com.

THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! Because of Your kind and generous support, this show comes out nearly every week. Your generosity funds the creation, promotion, and production of the show. It allows us to attract new listeners and to help our community grow.

As a patron, you hear episodes before regular listeners. You can pledge a dollar or more per episode and cap how much you want to spend each month over on Patreon. You can also get music - only episodes and free MP3s when you become a Song Henger.

A super special thanks to our Celtic Legends: Dan mcDade, Carol Baril, Miranda Nelson, Nancie Barnett, Kevin Long, Lynda MacNeil, Annie Lorkowski, Travis Senzaki, Shawn Cali

Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Eilene Marie Toppin Ording emailed a photo: "Here's what I do while listening to your podcast. I walk early in the morning and this day, the moon was still up and walked with me. My Scottish roots are very deep and we came to North America via Ireland. My mother's maiden name is McCamus which would equate to McKeamish or McHamish probably in Scottish. Be that as it may, we are part of Clan Gunn. One of my bucket list items is to visit the Clan Gunn Museum & Heritage Centre in Latheron, Scotland. Unfortunately, they are not open and I can't travel at the moment anyway. I'm enjoying your podcast. I've been sending the podcast link and some band links to my son in the Navy in Guam. We share an interest in all things Celtic or Gaelic. My favorite band is Gaelic Storm (they play the KC Irish Fest every Labor Day Weekend), but I recently fell in love with Niamh Parsons' voice. I first heard her and her partner on your podcast.?? Have a great day."

    WELCOME TO CELTIC MUSIC

    * Helping you celebrate Celtic culture through music. I am Marc Gunn. I'm a musician and podcaster. Here, I share my love of Irish and Celtic music from around the globe with you. I hope you fall in love with one of the artists in this show.

Because I'm also here for the artists. The artists in this show need your support. You can find a link to all of the artists, along with show times for each song when you visit our website at celticmusicpodcast.com. You can also support this podcast on Patreon.

Today we're paying tribute to the fallen. The title of this episode was inspired by a couple tracks in the show. Originally, I was thinking of soldiers. But with nearing 800,000 deaths due to covid, I thought we'd also pay tribute to all the people who fought and continue to fight for their lives whether from war torn nations or bravely working in healthcare, or the day-to-day concerns about a dreadful virus that has impacted so many people.

I pray that each and every one of you is safe through the holidays and long into the new year.

THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST!

Because of Your kind and generous support, this show comes out at least four times a month. Your generosity funds the creation, promotion and production of the show. It allows us to attract new listeners and to help our community grow.

As a patron, you get to hear episodes before regular listeners. When we hit a milestone, you get an extra-long episode. You can pledge a dollar or more per episode and cap how much you want to spend each month over on Patreon. And if you pledge $5 or more per episode, you'll also get the all new music-only episodes. I introduce the show, play non-stop music for nearly an hour, and then close the show. Plus, you'll get access to hundreds of free MP3 downloads.

A super special thanks to our Celtic Legends: Dan mcDade, Carol Baril, Miranda Nelson, Nancie Barnett, Kevin Long, Lynda MacNeil, Annie Lorkowski, Travis Senzaki, Shawn Cali

Remember to send in your Celtic Christmas celebration photos.

David K. Hutchings emailed photos: "Aloha from Hawaii, I listen in a beautiful grove in the lush rainforest of Pololo valley. I get out my tobacco pipe , light it up and turn your podcast on to share it with the trees and birds of the rain forest. Mahalo Nui Loa"

Darren Mahoney emailed on Patreon: "I'm driving to the Irish Music Festival in Ocean Shores Washington listening to your fine Podcast, as I roll into town Bill Mullen is singing on the Podcast. First Person I run into is Bill Mullen! He was happy to be on your show! What a great fellow and performer, I have an awesome photo of us in our kilts, Wish I could post it. ????"

Mary Lynn Deal emailed: "Hi Marc, I really love that your show is around. I've checked out a couple of other Irish music podcasts and yours is the best I've found. Some folks are talking quite a bit between each song. Kinda disrupts the flow of the show. I'm usually crafting or working when I listen. Keeps me focused."

Mary added later: "Hi again Marc, My daughter got to see a wonderful show a few years ago. It's called "A Celtic Christmas" By Tomáseen Foley. It is a wonderful story! You should check it out."

Ken emailed: "Hey there Marc. I came across your podcast by accident. I became a member and am in the process of shifting through the treasure trove of music and information that is part of your podcast. I heard on the first podcast I opened that you are a musician. that became obvious when I went through the information and saw the CD that you have made available for sale.

Now, do not get me wrong, I am going to ask a stupid question. How do you make your money to support the undertaking you have embarked upon since (2008??).

Second, do you go on podcast sponsored trips to listen to this music; or do you rely on bands sending in demo's. I am not a musician at all. I just love music. Have taken a fancy to Celtic music as I like the heritage. Will plan on visiting the Emerald Isle some time before I pass. Can listen to Celtic Music just as much as Country music, New Wave, Classical, etc. All depending upon the mood. Thank you for your time and Take care of yourself"
