Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Peter Bengtson emailed: "Hi Mark, The mornings have been too cold for me to walk before breakfast. I've taken to having breakfast and waiting for the temperature to rise a bit. I've enjoyed the walks with no wind and warmer weather. My air pods and smart phone are working fine so I'm listening to your podcasts. Thanks for posting new ones weekly. I've been watching various remodeling projects and water features installed in peoples front yards." Leonard L. Streeper emailed a photo: "Dear Mr. Gunn, I love your show and thank you so much for bringing me music that I love. My only criticism is you weren't around in the late 80s when I fell in love with this genre of music and records were as rare as unicorns. I like to write fantasy books while listening. The music helps keep me in the mindset while covering up the sounds of the modern world. Once again, thank you so much for all you do. Sincerely," Fabio Fiorelli emailed: "Hi Mark! In one of your episodes I think you were looking at irish and celtic italian bands. I'd like to promote a band from my hometown, called "Whisky Trail". EATING HUMBLE PIE FOR ST PATRICK'S DAY

First let me start with an apology. Last episode, I shared a pet peeve. I said Facebook was my least favorite place to get comments. That's true. But according to my website, I was wrong. There was some old info that said EXACTLY that. Ugh. I screwed up.

IF YOU WANT TO ENJOY SOME HUMBLE PIE WITH ME…

I have two St Patrick's Day celebrations happening in the Atlanta area this weekend. On Saturday, March 14, I'm at Ironshield Brewing in Lawrenceville, GA. On Sunday, March 15, I'm at Three Taverns Brewery in Decatur, GA. You can come eat some humble pie with me… or at least toast a pint of beer with me. I'd love to meet you.

DO YOU NEED A GUEST ON YOUR PODCAST?

I'd love to share my love of Celtic culture through music with your podcast. Or we can talk about science fiction, fantasy, podcasting, or even cats. I'd love to chat with you. If you know a podcaster who might be interested, drop me a line.

ST PATRICK'S DAY ON PUB SONGS & STORIES

The next Pub Songs & Stories podcast is a packed extra long episode for St Patrick's Day. Jon Pilatzke shares some stories about the late Paddy Maloney of The Chieftains. The Muckers wrote a song on a Flogging Molly cruise. Guilty pleasures come in many shapes. What's mine? I'll give you a hint. It comes in plaid.

Subscribe to Pub Songs & Stories.

The artists in this show need your support which you can do by buying their music. You can find a link to all of the artists, along with show times and chapters for each song when you visit our website at celticmusicpodcast.com. You can also support this podcast on Patreon.

    SPEAKING OF PATREON…

I don't know if you knew this. But I donate 10% of all of the money that is earned on Patreon to Celtic Non - Profits. I do the same with our Celtic compilation CDs. The money goes largely to Celtic festivals where we promote Celtic culture through music.

I keep track of the donations to all the festivals and organizations on our website. Well, I say that, but I hadn't updated that list in about four years, even though I continued to make donations.

We donated $4200 last year to different festivals. To date, we've donated over $45,000. You can find the complete list of Celtic Non - Profit donations on our website.

    PET PEEVE

I have a pet peeve to share. I got a Facebook message from someone representing a Celtic artist. They said, "I see your preferred method of contact is Facebook".

Let me be clear. Facebook is my LAST method of contact. It is the #1 place I promote the podcast. But I do not like Facebook. It also shows a complete disinterest in finding out how to contact me.

    BUY SELCOUTH BY MARC GUNN

My latest CD features Sci F'Irish music. That means it is original songs fusing pop culture themes with Irish drinking songs. There are some traditional music on the album. But mostly, it features songwriting by Marc Gunn with guests including: Screeched Inn, The Muckers, Jamie Haeuser, Sam Gillogly, Nathan Deese, and Mikey Mason.

Selcouth means, "when everything is strange and different, yet you find it marvelous anyway."

The album is not completely Celtic and it's not just science fiction and fantasy. It's a fusion of the two. It's heartfelt and a lot of fun.

It's now on sale in my Bandcamp store. Check out Selcouth now.

    TRAVEL WITH CELTIC INVASION VACATIONS

Every year, I take a small group of Celtic music fans on the relaxing adventure of a lifetime. We don't see everything. Instead, we stay in one area. We get to know the region through its culture, history, and legends. You can join us with an auditory and visual adventure through podcasts and videos. WE HAVE A COMPANION PODCAST

Pub Songs & Stories is a Virtual Public House for musicians to share the stories and inspiration behind their music. I ask musicians on this show to share a story about a song or tune, from a gig, or maybe even just a piece of Celtic history that they love. I share their story and the related song in the podcast.

I also share songs from the Best of 2022 playlist. And of course, I talk about some of my songs and what's new with me. Just like this show, it is free to subscribe.

THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST!

Because of Your kind and generous support, this show comes out at least four times a month. Your generosity funds the creation, promotion and production of the show. It allows us to attract new listeners and to help our community grow.

A super special thanks to our newest Patrons: Shelley W, Andrew P

Now I mentioned the show comes out at least four times a month. Typically, I plan to take a week off every quarter. But the podcast lost a few patrons over the past month. Meanwhile, our expenses went up last year. I have an audio engineer, graphic artist, social media person, plus there's advertising expenses and I buy the music from all of the artists who complete the permission form. So I think it's time for a new patronage milestone.

The next off week is June 2. I want to do a very special 2 - 3 hour episode. I'm not sure of the theme. I'll let you know in the coming weeks. But I set the goal at $850 per episode. That means we need to raise $70 per episode. That will cover the new expenses.

That's about 15 new people subscribing on Patreon. I know that's a pretty tough goal to reach. But you have until May 1 to sign up. If we can do that, then you will get that incredible show on June 2.

Oh! And every patron will get a bumper sticker as well as a small way of saying thanks.

You also get to hear episodes before regular listeners. Any amount is great. You can pledge a dollar or more per episode and cap how much you want to spend each month over on Patreon. You can also get music - only episodes when you become a Song Henger.

You can become a generous Patron of the Podcast on Patreon at SongHenge.com.

Bonnie Menard replied on a Facebook post: "Marc, I just have to tell you. I was listening to another Irish & Celtic Music Podcast at work and then I found yours. This week I switched to Pub Songs and Stories and I am loving it. On both your podcasts all the music and artists are great, but my favorite is you. By Amazing Grace and the Mingulay Boat song are amazing. Such a powerful voice. I can't wait to find the time to visit your websites and order a cd. Thank you for all you do."

Moxie LaBouche messaged on Facebook: "Love the show. In the warm months I listen on the weekends while working in the yard or cutting firewood and in the winter I listen while doing the grocery shopping. 🙂. If you ever need a female voice for a bumper or anything, let me know."

Amy Sherman emailed: "Hi Mark! We've been enjoying the podcast as always! The episodes and the new Spotify playlist make great soundtracks to backyard cooking fires and star gazing.

After listening to Dierdre Graham on your podcast, I found her podcast called Gaelic Song Stories. I haven't listened to all of the episodes yet, but it's interesting for anyone who wants to hear Gaelic, Gaelic translations, and Gaelic song history. She has some neat interviews, and listening to the background of the song stories helps put the lyrics in historical timelines.

Ok - I'm off to re - listen to the latest episode so I can go vote for the playlist. Thanks Mark! "

She also commented on Patreon: "Even if some bands don't make it to the Spotify list, voting makes me take a closer look at the artist name and remember it better. I've followed a lot of new bands on Spotify because of this new poll."

Second, you ask what are we doing while listening to the podcast. Well the other day I was running south of Huntington Beach pier, and oddly for such a lovely day, as you can see by the attached picture nobody was there! The podcast made some lovely accompaniment as I ran with or sometimes carrying a small Aussiedoodle puppy. On a different occasion I put your podcast playing from my phone as I climbed Angel's Landing in Zion National Park. It was a great day as well and perfect lively music to motivate me up the trail to the glorious view at the top. Thanks Mark! Cheers,"

Next Week: The Women of Irish & Celtic Music

I titled this episode "Slow Travel". Today, I got an email from VisitScotland.com. That's a website promoting Scottish tourism. Since I'm leading a Celtic Invasion Vacation to Loch Lomond in Scotland, I've been subscribed and seeing what they have to offer.

Today, they shared an article and video about Slow Travel. That's something that I greatly appreciate and cherish with my own vacations. It's not about seeing everything. It's getting to know an area.

Check out the link in the shownotes. And I highly recommend their newsletter. They seem to be leading the pack when it comes to promoting ecotourism and sustainable travel. Stuff I've slowly thought about. But they're really doing it in Scotland. So kudos!

Let's get on with the show.

IRISH & CELTIC MUSIC: BEST OF 2022 PLAYLIST

Your votes are tabulated two weeks after the episode is released. The most - popular songs are added to TWO playlists. One one Spotify. One on Amazon Music.

I sometimes make errors. So the newest additions to the Playlist are Tuatha de Danann, Doolin', We Banjo 3, Screeched and Marc Gunn

Listen on Spotify and Amazon Music.

    BUY SELCOUTH BY MARC GUNN

My new CD is now available. It's called Selcouth. It's an album of almost all original music. There's one traditional tune set and "Loch Lomond," a traditional Scottish song.

The rest of it is a bunch of original songs with Celtic - inspired music. There's a few comedy tracks like "Mingulay Cat Song", "Why Do You Torture Me", "Genetic Counseling Song", and "Kilty Pleasure". There's a new hobbit song inspired by Lord of the Rings and a song I think Wolf Loescher sang on this podcast a year ago. There are four songs inspired by the pop culture TV show, Firefly, but fused with Celtic sounds. The lyrics are definitely relevant to fans of the show, but the stories are about real people finding change.

One of my favorite parts about the album is collaboration with other musicians like Screeched Inn, The Muckers, Jamie Haeuser, Sam Gillogly, Nathan Deese, and Mikey Mason.

It's now on sale in my Bandcamp store. Check out Selcouth now.

WANT TO HOST YOUR OWN PODCAST?

I've been publishing the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast since 2005. My host since the beginning has been a great podcast company called Libsyn. I actually left for a couple months with disastrous results. I now host ALL of my podcasts with them. And yes, I have more than the two you hear about on this show.

I'm telling you this because Libsyn launched an affiliate program. I don't do affiliate programs much any more. But if there's one I'm happy to talk about, it's Libsyn. I'll be honest. I don't care as much about the money. So you're welcome to use the affiliate link in the shownotes. But if you sign up with them, you will be happier.

Donald Rice emailed: "Dear Marc, First of all, I love your podcast, music, and cats. I just submitted an album from the band I am in - Poitin. We are based in Fargo/Moorhead - Fargo is in ND, Moorhead in MN. They are sister cities across the Red River of the North, which is the river named in the album title - Banks of Red River. What is particularly noteworthy about Banks is that it features Metis music, a tradition which melds Irish, French, and Native sounds and stories. Though we play many Irish tunes and some originals, Metis music has become our special calling card, having played at many festivals and venues including a recent Metis festival at the Old Treaty Crossing in Northern Minnesota. Our music also has been featured at many community and youth orchestra concerts. You can see some of this on videos on our website, which was included in the submission. Thanks so much for considering playing our music on your podcast. Let me know if you have any questions."

Buddy McPeak emailed: "Just found the podcast on pandora. Great music! I'll be listening from now on. Thanks"

Karen H emailed: "Hi Marc, I am a recent Patron. :)

I joined so I can expand my knowledge of and listening experiences with other Celtic Musicians. I have very little of each at the moment.

So, my favorites that I've listened to for years are: Altan, Lunasa, The Gothard Sisters, The Chieftains, and though she is probably a different category, my all time favorite music artist no matter the genre is Enya. I have so much to explore in the Celtic music genre! I appreciate your podcasts."

    Troy Bliss emailed: "Hey Marc,

I loved your show at Gencon this last year. Great music and entertainment! Some of my favorite Celtic bands are The High Kings, Drop Kick Murphys, (Shadows of Esteren, a indie French RPG has four professionally composed albums inspired by their Celtic Gothic Horror Roleplaying game, it's on Bandcamp and is Amazing!), lastly I love a Duo local to RI and MA called Atwater Donnelly. They are traditional folk lore music and are sooo good!

Looking forward to the bumper sticker and supporting you!"

Robert replied on Instagram: "On your second to last podcast you asked everyone what are you doing while listening to the podcast. Well, I don't have a Facebook so I had to look you up on Instagram. Usually what I do is very very early in the morning when it's still dark I have my coffee in the garage and I am a tobacco pipe smoker, so I enjoy my cuppa Joe puffing on my pipe listening to some good Irish in Celtic music. Thanks for the podcast you're doing a great job. Keep it going! Robert"

Alied Pérez Martínez shared a beginner tin whistle YouTube video: "hi Marc, a quick one to show you my skills (for some definitions of skill :D) with the tin whistle, and to thank you for inspiring me to learn it."
