    THIS WEEK IN CELTIC MUSIC

0:13 - Spoil The Dance "Jigs : McIntyre's Fancy, Newtown Bridge, Inis Bearachain Jig 2 " from Returning Home

    4:04 - WELCOME

4:48 - ÚLLA "Fr. Kelly Set (Reels)" from Ulla

8:51 - The Kelly Girls "Mariners of England" from May You Always

11:49 - Wolf & Clover "Top of Cork Road - First Avenue - The Merry Maiden" from Wolf & Clover

14:24 - Wolf Loescher "Lads Among Heather" from Sheep's Clothing

I wanted to share this song in part because of a new episode on my Pub Songs & Stories podcast. I talk about a song called "Lads in the Shire". The lyrics were inspired by Wolf Loescher's song. Though of course, they are about Lord of the Rings, which is rather timely since a new Lord of the Rings prequel is coming to Prime Video next month.

    18:42 - FEEDBACK

21:36 - Andreas Transø "If" from The Earth and Everything in It

24:32 - Sharon Shannon "Pull Out The Stops" from Sacred Earth

27:40 - McKasson & McDonald "Mark the Hard Earth" from Harbour

32:39 - Gerry O'Beirne & Rosie Shipley "Air" from Yesterday I Saw the Earth Beautiful

    34:14 - THANKS

    36:11 - CELTIC MUSIC STORY

A few weeks back, I was reading Lissa Schneckenburger's email. Lissa is a fantastic Celtic musician from Vermont. She has a great newsletter where she inspires you to practice. In one email, she was talking about Summer Road Trips. She mentioned the Sustainable Touring Arts Coalition on how to make your travel as sustainable as possible. Her friend Laura Cortese toured plastic free. And Lissa did a tour with her husband and son on a bicycle!

I'll let her tell the story

41:28 - Lissa Schneckenburger "The 11th Labor of Hercules" from Thunder in My Arms

    44:40 – SUSTAINABILITY

I found Lissa's story extremely inspiring. Obviously, I'm concerned about our carbon impact on the climate which is why I mentioned the Carbon Almanac in a past podcast. Her story got me excited. I went down a rabbit hole looking into sustainability in the music industry. I found a few resources, but not much. So I've been looking into ways that I can make my music career and podcasting career more sustainable.

One of the coolest things that Lissa Schneckenburger's story inspired me to do is to make my own bike gig plans. With any luck, I will announce at least one bike show this Fall.

I'd love your thoughts and feedback. Have you seen any Celtic musicians working hard to support our environment? What did they do? Please email me.

46:21 - Old Man Flanagan's Ghost "May" from Sociable

51:22 - Harmundi "Farewell To Thom" from Um Orvalho Boreal

55:56 - Jamison Celtic Rock "The Most Irish Girl in America" from Heyhowrya

    59:07 - CLOSING

59:46 - Niamh Parsons "Green Grass It Grows Bonny" from In My Prime

THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST!

There are over 300 amazingly generous people who pledge $1, $5, $10, $25 or more each and every week to support the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I am super grateful to each for their generosity. But sometimes, I screw up. I forget to charge for an episode.

That happened this week. The money came in from last month's Patreon pledges. I was $500 short what I normally get each month. As you might imagine, I was a bit shocked. I realized immediately that I didn't charge for one of the episodes last month. That shortfall has a big impact on my life and business.

I emailed my patrons and let them know about the problem. I was flooded with small donations and large ones from people who wanted to help make up that shortfall.

So I want to take a moment to thank each and every Patron of the Podcast who sent in money to help me meet my financial goals for this month. I have a lot of new artist music I am buying this month. So that helps immensely.

If you want to support the podcast with a one-off contribution, I will put a link in the shownotes to where you can donate OR even buy some Celtic podcast t-shirts or other merch.

Again, thank you so much for supporting the show!

Thank you to our newest Patrons of the Podcast: Beth H, Richard N, Sean H

I'm almost always listening while I work, as music affects the non-technical side of my brain. It's always awesome, and while I don't necessarily love everything, there's lots of great stuff in every episode. Love, love, love. Wish I discovered this years ago.

But better late than never. Thanks for all you do."

Jody Raiford emailed a photo: "Hey la!

Today, I'm working on my Senior Design capstone project for my EE at U Mich. I'm making a 3d printer that prints in stainless steel! Trying hard to stay under budget, lol.

Thankfully I have the support of the i3 Detroit hackerspace! Couldn't have come this far without them! (Or without the great tunes, thanks for keeping it rolling)

P.S. Pardon the messy shop, wasn't planning on a photo opp today, but I can't turn down a plea like that now can I?"

Daniel Faigin replied to our Celtic Music Magazine: "Marc, Well, I'm listening to the podcast as I'm working on a document, and I heard you ask if anyone has started a podcast. I have a new one - - just started in the last few months - - but it has nothing to do with Celtic Music. It deals with the history of California's highways; you can find it at caroutebyroute.org . I've been careful to make sure any music I'm using is public domain (and I really only use it for opening and closing). For now, I've been using https://freemusicarchive.org/home which allows you to search by license type. Hopefully, I'll get someone to write us a theme they will let us use. As you know, when starting out (and having no advertising), you have to watch your pennies."

Phyu LuLu emailed a photo a couple years ago: "Hello Mark! I'm having a perfect Tuesday morning all thanks to you! (It's 10:30 here!)

I was just thinking how amazing you are to let us enjoy these beautiful tunes by creating this beautiful channel! I'm now studying for my upcoming job interview which will be in next 3 hours. Actually, I'm not sure if I want the job. I'm also happy with my current one. I've been facing so many dilemmas these days. Anyway, one thing I'm sure is that I'm so deeply in love with celtic and irish music! I might share my poorly sung celtic songs with you some day! Yours is my favorite channel on apple podcast and the safe place whenever I got tired of those medical podcasts! ^_^

    Grai chyeju kaba sai yaw!

Stay safe and all the best!

    cheers!

Phyu Phyu, From Kachin, Myanmar (the other side of the world)"

Cheryl Arvio emailed: "Mark, do you ever go to Milwaukee Irish Fest? My partner and I go every year, it's really a grand time! Four days of near - continuous music on something like a dozen stages. Everything from local traditional bands to nationally known Celtic rock acts like Scythian and the Elders. There's also a cultural village, set and ceili dance pavilion, theater, Irish language lessons, even currach boat races and Irish dogs.

I think it would be a great way for you to make contacts for getting new music, and maybe find a way to promote the podcast as well.

It's more of a trek for you than it is for us in Chicago, but it's such a major event, I feel someone like you, with your appreciation for the music and the culture, should experience it!

Michael Finlay emailed a photo with a great story: "Hi Marc, so while I was listening to the podcast my kid ran inside telling me that our neighbor had come looking for help. She had found a kitten in the engine compartment of her truck. A tiny, terrified, little thing we figured was about 7 weeks old. The neighbor couldn't keep her (allergies), so we took her in. On the way to her doctor's appointment I played the show, hoping to calm her down. It did not work. Aside from a minor ear infection, and being a bit thin for her age, she was given a clean bill of health. I now have a new baby, little Minka. And thank the gods, she's finally putting on some weight. And I think she likes the show, since when I was cooking recently she tried to climb up my leg. But really that was either your playlist or the bacon. Any way, your work has been the soundtrack for the arrival of a new bundle of joy into my life. I will try to send a picture of sweet Minka."

Stephen Dunford emailed: "Happy July/ End of Pride Month. Hi Marc, Thank you for a great show, Love the music and love the vibe. Listening to your podcast got me through the pandemic with a smile on my face. Ha

What am I doing today? Well... I am listening to your podcast while working from home.

I started listening to your podcast while I was working in the office in a different career in fashion, as mentioned before your podcast helped me sort some things out about what I truly enjoy in music and life. Music gives life - if you get my drift. Since then I switched careers in UX design which allows me to work remotely where I can listen to your music freely around the house wherever I want.

Anyhow, my hubby and I are going to Ireland, Scotland, and England for our delayed honeymoon at the end of August. We are calling it "Discovering our roots". Since I am of English Irish descent and he is American of Scottish/ mixed descent. We can't wait.

Needless to say, I will be on the lookout for local music, but in the meantime, we will be listening to your podcast along the winding roads of our ancestors. Take care and thanks for your podcast."

Woodland Folk emailed photos of Courting and TREES

And finally, here's a run I did while listening to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, on my way to Indianapolis.

    BUY SELCOUTH BY MARC GUNN

My latest CD features Sci F'Irish music. That means it is original songs fusing pop culture themes with Irish drinking songs. There are some traditional music on the album. But mostly, it features songwriting by Marc Gunn with guests including: Screeched Inn, The Muckers, Jamie Haeuser, Sam Gillogly, Nathan Deese, and Mikey Mason.

Selcouth means, "when everything is strange and different, yet you find it marvelous anyway."

The album is not completely Celtic and it's not just science fiction and fantasy. It's a fusion of the two. It's heartfelt and a lot of fun.

It's now on sale in my Bandcamp store. Check out Selcouth now.

Donald Rice of Poitin Band sent a couple thank yous: "Marc, Thanks so much for including our reel set on the upcoming show. Boatsmen starts with me playing clawhammer style banjo which takes a while to learn. Anyway, we appreciate being included on your wonderful podcast. I listened today from Sicily where my wife and I are visiting some friends and their lovely cat, Thai. Slain"

He also wrote: "Marc, Thanks for including the photo of Poitin Band and our Irish polka set on the Courting Tales episode of the podcast. That picture was taken last year at the Old Crossing Treaty Park in northern Minnesota where we played at the Chautauqua and French - Canadian/Metis Festival. It's a great multi - cultural festival and we are booked again for this annual event in late August 2022. We are so proud to be part of your great podcast."

Shel O'Toole emailed: "Hi Marc, I shared a link to your podcast page with the whole network of Irish muso's in the greater Ballarat region of Victoria, Australia. I'm not sure how many members there are but definitely more than a few. Hopefully you'll be getting more input from Australia soon.

I'm a bit jealous you are in Scotland. One of my grandmothers hails from Ayr. I hope to get there one day and explore that fine country. Meanwhile I'm loving the music from both Scotland and Ireland."

Woodland Folk emailed some flower and foot photos. You can see what I'm talking about when you visit the shownotes.

I also posted a photo from a run that I took on my most recent Celtic Invasion of Scotland. We ran around the Estate we were staying in. They had cleared the trees up there. So this is not the most dramatic of pictures. But it was a fun run.

The music itself is far more calming to me than most other genres because it reminds me of hot summers of my childhood dancing for Trinity Irish Dance at Irish fests. As the pandemic seems to be waning, we've been reaching out to venues, festivals, radio shows, and podcasts to let folks know that we have an authentic, energetic, and charming stage presence and we'd like to get known outside of our small part of the Midwest. Our core instrumentation is fiddle, concertina, and mandolin, with the occasional guest guitarist or percussionist. With our Ohio - based guitarist Rick Nelson, we recorded a 6 track EP called Flora, which we'd like to offer you to play on your podcast. Thanks much and all the best! "

Peter Bengtson emailed: "Hi Mark, I was walking yesterday and tried to get on SeriusXM. Something was wrong and I couldn't get on.

I got on your podcast - Episode 546 I think. Once that episode was over, another episode started. I listened to a total of 4 or 5 episodes. This works great for me. In the past, it seems that once the episode I listened to stopped, I had to go to start a new episode of Celtic Music or startup SeriusXM."

Kennedy Johnson emailed: "Marc, I haven't dropped a message in awhile, just wanted to say that the St Patrick's Day Podcast was wonderful !!! I love the music/podcast.

I hope you and your family are well. My Daughter and I went down to the KC SPD parade.

Sounded like the Atlanta SPD parade was a cold one - Kansas City had wonderful weather, Sunny 74 that day.

Estimated over 400,000 attended the parade that day. I made a wonderful corned beef and cabbage dinner that night - so good.

I am hoping to catch a live show one day, probably in Texas as it's closer to KC.

Also hoping you'll be a performer at the Kansas City Irish Fest Labor Day weekend (Sept.) Slainte"
