Why You Don't Have Peace Mar 27, 2024
    Show notes

If you’re struggling to make progress toward results and outcomes you really are committed to achieving, I invite you to consider this question:

“Am I at peace with BLANK?”

For example - “Am I at peace with:

    • … my body and/or weight?”
    • … my food and/or drink?”
    • … my relationships?”
    • … my career or job?”
    • … my parenting or children?”
    • … my finances?”
    • … something else?”

If you answer NO, it’s likely because “part of you” isn’t cooperating with your most authentic self.

In her best-selling book, Rezoom: The Powerful Reframe To End The Crash-And-Burn Cycle of Food Addiction, author and teacher Susan Pierce Thompson, highlights “Parts Work”:

“... it’s necessary to recognize and address the parts of ourselves that have led us to our old ways… in Parts Work, we learn which parts are directing our thinking and behavior so we can recognize them when they’re taking over… “

    Thompson categories the parts as:

    • Indulger
    • Controller
    • Rebel
    • Caretaker
    • Isolator
    • Inner Critic

If this interests you, I invite you to learn about these parts and how they may be sabotaging your best efforts to make progress:

How To Offer The Right Help Mar 20, 2024
    Show notes

We all make the mistake of trying to “help” those we care about by:

    • swooping in rescuing them
    • solving their problems
    • giving them advice
    • teaching them
    • cheering them on
    • attempting to distract them

But what really helps, is discerning the role they need or want us to play in the moment.

    Ask them:

“Do you want me to show up for you as a LISTENER, COACH, TEACHER, or CONSULTANT?

If they need a LISTENER, remain quiet and simply listen to their words. If appropriate, repeat their words back to them:

“It sounds like you’re feeling BLANK… is that true?”

If they need a COACH, your job is to ask questions. For example:

    • “What do you need to feel supported and safe?”
    • “How are you feeling?”
    • “What do you want to do? What don’t you want to do?”
    • “What do you need?”
    • “What don’t you want? What do you want?”
    • “If you could have this situation any way that you want it, how might you want it?”

If they need a TEACHER, ask them:

    • “Is there something you need to know or want to understand?”

If they need a CONSULTANT, they may need options or choices to respond to:

    • “Do you want to BLANK, BLANK, or something else?”
    • “Are you feeling BLANK, BLANK, or something else?”
    • “How might it feel to say something like BLANK? Does that work for you?”

If you’re willing to take the time to discern what they really need in order to feel supported by you, it will positively affect the quality of your relationship.

Thank you for investing your valuable time and energy into listening to the podcast. I’m so very grateful for you.

What And Who To Say NO To Mar 13, 2024
    Show notes

Welcome to Season 2 of Intelligent Intoxication: Crafting A Top-Shelf Life.

“We have activities we engage in and people we interact with. Some of those activities and relationships energize us and we feel lit up, alive and inspired while doing them or when we’re with them. Others drain and deplete our energy and we feel exhausted, tapped out, saturated.”

    (Inspired/Paraphrased by Feroshia Knight.)

Our goal is to tell ourselves the truth regarding which of our professional/personal activities and relationships energize or deplete us.

    1. Make a list of your personal and professional activities. Personal activities may include:
    • Chores
    • Errands
    • calls/emails/texts
    • Projects
    • hobbies
    • Things to do with others
    • Things you do alone
    Professional activities may include:
    • Tasks
    • Projects
    • Meetings
    • Communications
Next to each activity, place a + sign if it energizes you, and a - sign if it depletes you. Identify what the energizing activities share in common. Discern what the depleting/draining activities have in common. Identify the immediate, temporary benefit you get from saying YES to activities that drain you. Identify what saying YES to activities that drain you is costing you long- term. Identify the long-term benefit you get from saying YES to activities that energize you. Identify the temporary cost to saying NO to things that don’t energize you. Decide what to do with the draining activities:
    • ditching it
    • delegating it
    • doing it while you do something fun
    • decreasing the amount of it you do or how you do it
    1. Make a list of your personal and professional relationships. Personal relationships may include:
    • wives/husbands/partners
    • children
    • friends
    • extended family
    • acquaintances
    1. Professional relationships may include:
    • Bosses
    • Colleagues
    • Team members
    • Support staff
    1. Next to each name, place a + sign if the relationship energizes you, and a - sign if the relationship depletes you.
    2. Identify what the energizing relationships share in common.
    3. Discern what the depleting/draining relationships have in common.
    4. Identify the immediate, temporary benefit you get from spending time in relationships that drain you.
    5. Identify what saying YES to relationships that drain you is costing you long-term.
    6. Identify the long-term benefit you get from saying YES to relationships that energize you.
    7. Identify the temporary cost to saying NO to relationships that fail to energize you.

If a relationship drains or depletes you, you can consider:

    • Dissolving or ending it
    • Communicate what you want or need
    • Create and communicate boundaries
    • decreasing the amount of time you spend with this person

I invite you to consider these questions in regard to your personal and professional activities and relationships:

    • Does this activity energize me?
    • Does this activity deplete me?
    • Does this relationship energize me?
    • Does this relationship deplete me?
    • If so, why am I staying?
    • If I’m leaving, do I like my reasons?

Thank you for investing your valuable time and energy into listening to the podcast. I’m so very grateful for you.

CHASING AND ESCAPING AT THE EXPENSE OF FEELING FREE Mar 06, 2024
    Show notes

Welcome to Season 2 of Intelligent Intoxication: Crafting A Top-Shelf Life.

“My favorite way to think about soul power is the quality of being radically FREE, because one is neither trying to escape something, nor chase something.”

    Simone Grace Seol

When we are in the habit of CHASING “something more”, we are likely:

    • stuck in comparisonitis
    • feeling envious or jealous
    • believing that “there” will be better than “here”

    We CHASE because:

    • we don’t think we’re enough, whole, worthy, or valuable
    • we’re trying to prove our worthiness
    • we’re seeking approval, permission, or validation

When we CHASE, we get the immediate yet temporary BENEFIT of looking forward and/or living in anticipation. Yet, the habit of chasing is costing the opportunity to receive and enjoy abundance in the present moment.

When we are in the habit of ESCAPING, we are likely:

    • numbing or avoiding by engaging in:
      • overeating
      • overdrinking
      • overworking
      • overcommitting
      • over-Netflix-ing
      • over-scrolling
      • overthinking
    • detached from our body and emotions
    • procrastinating
    • blaming others

    We ESCAPE because:

    • it hurts too much not to
    • our emotions are too hard to feel
    • it feels unsafe to be in the present moment

When we ESCAPE, we get the immediate yet temporary BENEFIT of avoiding what we don’t want to feel. Yet, the habit of ESCAPING is costing us the opportunity to feel, process, and move through our emotions and past traumas.

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • How willing are you to seek the help you may need in order to stop chasing or escaping?
    • In order to feel radically free, what must I be willing to stop escaping?
    • In order to feel radically free, what must I be willing to stop chasing?

Thank you for investing your valuable time and energy into listening to the podcast. I’m so very grateful for you.

Why You're Not Thriving In The Second Half Of Life Feb 28, 2024
    Show notes

Welcome to Season 2 of Intelligent Intoxication: Crafting A Top-Shelf Life.

I’ve noticed a considerable difference between men and women who thrive in the second half of life and those who don’t. I offer my observations for your consideration. People who thrive:

    • don’t try to rewind to the past by focusing on how much better it was and wanting to go back in time. They invest their time and energy into the present while planning for their future.
    • exercise, eat well, and sleep.
    • create and maintain meaningful connections with others.
    • tell themselves the truth about what they want, what they don’t, what they’ll tolerate, what they won’t, what they’re willing or not willing to do or be.
    • are not attached to being needed - they’re committed to being wanted.
    • are making progress personally and professionally.
    • are or have been counseled and/or coached.
    • they don’t do what they don’t want to do.
    • don’t give or accept guilt trips.
    • are willing to seek help and support.

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • How willing are you to thrive?
    • How willing are you to stop blaming yourself or others for why you’re not thriving yet?
    • How willing are you to stop arguing with non-negotiables?

Thank you for investing your valuable time and energy into listening to the podcast. I’m so very grateful for you.

How You're Limiting What You Really Want Feb 21, 2024
    Show notes

Welcome to Season 2 of Intelligent Intoxication: Crafting A Top-Shelf Life.

You’re either lit up, alive, inspired, and fulfilled in your personal and professional life, or you’re not. Yet. If you’re not, it’s likely because you’re not:

    • challenging yourself and making continuous progress
    • utilizing your inherent gifts to make the contribution only you can make to others
    • prioritizing the pursuit of your passionate talents

In his best-selling book The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear And Take Your Life To The Next Level, author Gay Hendricks explains that we spend our time doing tasks or activities in four main “zones”:

    • Incompetence: the things we’re not good at that others do better.
    • Competence: the things we’re good enough at that others do as well.
    • Excellence: the things you do extremely well yet aren’t fulfilling.
    • Genius: the things you are uniquely suited to do as they utilize your inherent gifts and passionate talents. These activities will allow you to feel lit up, alive, inspired, and deeply fulfilled.

The author teaches a concept he refers to as an “Upper Limit Problem”:

“Each of us has an inner thermostat setting that determines how much love, success, and creativity we allow ourselves to enjoy. When we exceed our inner thermostat setting, we will often do something to sabotage ourselves, causing us to drop back in to the old, familiar zone where we feel secure… our Upper Limit thermostat setting holds us back from enjoying all the love, financial abundance, and creativity that‘s rightfully ours… this is the Upper Limit Problem in a nutshell; that subconscious self-sabotage that happens when we get a taste of something great… “

“… the one problem that holds you back… I call it the Upper Limit Problem, and I haven’t met a person yet who didn’t suffer at least a little bit from it. Even if you’re extravagantly successful, I can promise you that your own version of the Upper Limit Problem is still holding you back from achieving your true potential.”

I invite you to take these immediately actionable steps:

Answer these questions (preferably on paper):

    1. What do I really want for my professional and personal life?
    2. What am I currently believing is limiting or preventing me from having it?

I encourage you to complete this prompt:

    “I can’t have BLANK because I’m BLANK.”

Thank you for investing your valuable time and energy into listening to the podcast. I’m so very grateful for you.

How To Stop Dilluting The Real You Feb 14, 2024

Welcome to Season 2 of Intelligent Intoxication: Crafting A Top-Shelf Life.

I invite you to take these immediately actionable steps:

    • Delegate or ditch tasks and activities that you aren’t skilled to do.
      • (Your Inner Critic may have you believe that you should be able to do these things, because if you can’t, then it means that you’re insufficient or inadequate.)
    • Delegate or ditch tasks and activities that you’re skilled to do, yet so are others.
      • (Your Inner Critic may have you believe that because you can do these things, you should do them.)
    • Limit and/or transition out of the tasks or activities that you do extremely well IF they aren’t challenging you to make progress, feel fulfilled, or make a unique contribution to others.
      • (Your Inner Critic may have you believe that you will be letting down others if you stop doing these things. Others may not approve of your decision to stop these activities, but that doesn’t mean that you’re doing something wrong.)
    • Identify your inherent gifts and passions. Prioritize developing and utilizing these unique strengths and talents.

After 670 daily episodes, it’s officially time to wrap up the first season of the Intelligent Intoxication podcast. This is the perfect opportunity to reflect on what I’ve learned:

    • you never will be ready - you just need to be willing
    • confusion isn’t problem - it’s a reminder to remain present and discern the one next actionable step
    • you must create consistency in a manner that aligns with who you really are
    • done is better than perfect
    • sometime your best is C+ work
    • comparing my progress to someone else’s steals my sense of abundance and gratitude
    • create an audience in advance for what you want to create

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • How willing are you to begin?
    • How willing are you to use confusion to clarify your one next step?
