How To Be A Friend Others Celebrate Jan 15, 2025
    Show notes

In celebration of the life of my beautiful college friend, Christine Marquise, I’d like to highlight what made her wonderfully brilliant, as there is so much to be learned from her legacy.

Christine, or “Ollie”, as we lovingly called her, was an energizing, rather than depleting or draining friend. Here’s why:

    • She was emotionally mature and willing to be emotionally vulnerable
    • She gave her friends “equal air time” by listening and asking questions
    • She didn’t compete with friends (from a place of superiority) or get stuck in comparison-itis with friends (from a place of inferiority). She brought her best self to the friendship and wanted others to do the same.
    • She was physically, emotionally, and mentally present without the distraction of her phone.

    Inner Critic Assessment

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • How willing are you to share vulnerably with your friends without dumping
    • How aware are you in your friendships of listening more than you talk?
    • How willing are you to get curious about how competition and comparison-itis might be showing up in your friendships?
    • How willing are you to be present in your friendships

How To Start, Stop, or Create Dec 31, 2024
    Show notes

In order to start, stop, or create this, what is the system I am going to need in place? A system is a step-by-step checklist that you can follow on auto-pilot in the direction of your desired destination.

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • What do you want to stop doing?
    • What do you want to start doing?
    • What do you want to create?
    • Will saying YES to this energize me?

What To Expect When You Birth Something Different Dec 25, 2024
    Show notes

Birthing something new in your life will be:

    • Painful
    • Uncertain
    • Confusing
    • Disappointing

But feeling these emotions doesn’t mean that you’re on the wrong track. In order to “birth” your own version of different, you must be capable of and willing to feel “negative” emotions.

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • When do you notice quitting on your goals or dreams when they feel uncomfortable or painful?
    • How willing are you to ask for help in order to create your different life?

What You Always Have A Right To Dec 18, 2024
    Show notes

Years ago, my beloved therapist, Meg, gave me a “Personal Bill of Rights”. Admittedly, at that time, I wanted to want to believe everything on the page, but I didn’t… yet. But thanks to years of personal development with the help of therapists and coaches, today I practice and embody every right on the list. You can too, my friend.

If there’s a “right” that you really want to believe, I invite you to practice these prompts:

    • “I want to want to believe that… “
    • “It’s possible that I have a right to… “
    • “I’m willing to consider that I deserve… “

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • What did you notice feeling when you read this Bill of Rights?
    • How willing are you to create your own?
    • What might prevent you from doing so?
    • As you listened to tonight’s episode, did a specific relationship come to mind?

    • Focus on the five senses and how they impact your energy:
      • What smells energize me?
        • Experiment with essential oils… peppermint is great for this.
        • candles/incense/soaps/perfumes/lotions

    • Open
    • Lounging
    • Playful

    You're Righteous - Not Right Dec 04, 2024
    Show notes

When we are trying so hard to be “right”, we often become “righteous” and believe ourselves to be intellectually, morally, emotionally, or mentally superior to others, and we blame those who disagree with us.

When we’re in integrity, we are empowered to align our words and actions to our own core values. While we may challenge (respectfully) beliefs or decisions different from our own, we don’t persecute or bully from a place of blame.

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • When do you notice tipping into a “righteous” habit? How willing are you to course-correct in order to pivot back into integrity?
    • When do you notice feeling mentally, emotionally, politicallly, religiously, or spiritually superior to others?
    • What benefit do you get from feeling superior? What is it costing you?

What Healthy, Secure Friendships Really Are Nov 27, 2024
    Show notes

Healthy, secure friendships must be based on these three beliefs:

    • “I want my friends to have other friends.I don’t get to decide who my friends choose as friends.”
    • “My friends don’t have to love what I love or value what I value. We aren’t going to be 100% compatible.”
    • “I want to make sure that I give my friends equal air time.”

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • Which of your current friendships are genuinely healthy and secure?
    • How willing are you to celebrate your friends having other friends?
    • How willing are you to be responsible for finding matches for your wants and interests?

Gathering More Information Won't Allow You To Change Nov 20, 2024
    Show notes

There is a difference between collecting information and applying it. We can know and understand, but if we don’t use the information and understanding in our daily lives, we aren’t really growing or expanding.

I don’t believe that we need more information in order to make sustainable change. We might need a small amount of different information AND a simple and sustainable system for applying the information.

If you’re stuck, you might need:

    • different information
    • a sustainable, simple system for applying the information
    • a habit for managing uncomfortable emotions so that you can follow through with your system

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • How might it feel to practice thinking: “I know enough”?
    • What benefit do you get from collecting more information than you really need to change?
    • How willing are you to create a simple, sustainable system for making the changes that really matter to you?

How To Be Senstive To Others Without Self-Sacrificing Nov 13, 2024
    Show notes

We can be sensitive to the needs of others without sacrificing our own health, well-being, and relationships.

“... being sensitive to the emotional needs of others is actually about understanding other people’s emotional needs but not necessarily doing something about them. It can hold space without taking it on as something to fix. And, when we are really honest with ourselves about what belongs to us and what doesn’t, our capacity, our boundaries, and our values, it is easy to know when to hold space and when to try to meet their needs.”

    Christie Inge

    The Sensitive Soul

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • When do you notice setting yourself on fire in order to keep others warm?
    • When do you notice assuming that it is your responsibility to “fix” someone else’s emotions?
    • How willing are you to give yourself the permission to be sensitive to the emotional needs of others without having to do anything about them?

How To Boost Dopamine With A Menu Nov 06, 2024
    Show notes

“Dopamine is a neurotransmitter involved in the function of many areas of the body, such as digestion, sleep, learning and emotional health, including how one feels pleasure and reward… while other neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, also boost your mood, dopamine is a bit different because it's linked to reward and motivation. Essentially, you feel its release as you mark something off your list—big (a marathon) or small (finishing up meal prep for the week)... a dopamine menu is filled with activities and tasks that leave you with a sense of reward once they’re done. When you need a feel-good hit, you can choose something on your menu to improve your mood.”

“How To Make Your Own Dopamine Menu And Why It May Help Increase Happiness” by Elizabeth Shaw, M.S., RDN, CPT

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • What are your dopamine entrees? How often do you get to indulge in these rewarding activities or experiences?
    • What are your dopamine appetizers? Can you enjoy them in less than 10 minutes?
    • What are your dopamine sides? Which boring, mundane tasks can you pair them with?
