#34: "Meeting the Challenge" Update Sep 26, 2017
    Show notes

In a previous episode of this podcast, I took a hard look at the data available on the status of women in the legal profession in the United States. After the 10-year report related to the NAWL challenge was published, I went directly to the organization to hear the results of the challenge. In today's episode, I share these findings and I also discuss the challenge to Fortune 1000 companies to significantly increase opportunities to minority groups and women by 2020.

Things you will learn in this episode:

    • What is the "50/15/15" conundrum
    • Why only half the companies are reporting their numbers - and how that affects the results
    • Do women fair better in a one-tier system?
    • Why women work more hours but have less billable totals
    • The current pay gap between men and women and the biased against women of color
    • The reasons why women tend to leave the profession after 5 and 10-year marks

#32: Not All Firms or Companies Are Created Equal Sep 12, 2017
    Show notes

Firms and companies are not all created equal, and just because you are thriving at one company does not mean it can't be better for you somewhere else. Today I am revealing three key points that will break this down for you.

Things you will learn in this episode:

    • Why people tend to feel that there is no better firm or company for them

    Show notes

Today I'm back with another Listener Q&A, and this time I'm sharing the journey that led me to start my own business and how I found the courage to make the leap into entrepreneurship. You're going to hear how fear was actually one of the main drivers for me making this big change, and why feeling scared shouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

    • What I call "simple courage" and the two sides of fear that exists
    • What feelings caused me to look at my career and where I wanted to go
    • Why we should allow ourselves to feel, or to acknowledge the feelings we are having
    • The ways my own courage has come through and led to the spiritual work that I continue to do

    #30: Reacting to Racism Aug 29, 2017
    Show notes

Due to the recent events in Charlottesville, I wanted to speak out on the events that are taking place and why people aren't speaking out against racism. This subject is so prevalent today, which is why we need to be having these open conversations about it if we ever hope to progress as a society.

Things you will learn in this episode:

    • Why people aren't saying anything for fear of consequences
    • We aren't even close to making the progress we should have made by now - Here's why I think this is…
    • This is not a political conversation!
    • How I decided to step into my own fear and tell the truth

#29: How to Stop Procrastinating with guest Kara Loewentheil Aug 22, 2017
    Show notes

When this episode of the podcast comes out, I will be on vacation as I've been working some really long hours recently and struggling with my stress levels. For that reason, I thought now is the perfect time to bring in my very first guest to interview to talk about a lot of these issues we face!

Kara Loewentheil is a lawyer turned life coach and she has her own podcast called The Lawyer Stress Solution. In this episode, we'll be talking about the "Lawyer Brain" and how our thoughts actually lead to physical reactions in our bodies, such as anxiety. These reactions can affect our actions, so Kara will be teaching us some tool and tips to help reduce our stress and anxiety.

Things you will learn in this episode:

    • Kara's own journey from lawyer to life coach and the transformation she undertook to do it
    • What exactly is the "Lawyer Brain"?
    • Her thoughts on the whole "nature versus nurture" debate
    • The reasons we need to be aware of what we are thinking throughout the day
    • Why lawyers tend to want to live in the urgent quadrant of The Priority Matrix…

    #28: Path to Partnership Aug 15, 2017
    Show notes

Today we're exploring the path to partnership, and I'm sharing what associates need to consider to make sure all the work they are putting in will actually pay off. Although this episode is presented with large law firms in mind, the principles I discuss are general in nature and can be applied to associates in smaller firms as well. If you're already a partner, this episode can also help you understand that the associates in your firm may not have access to all of the information that you think they do.

Things you will learn in this episode:

    • How every firm is different when it comes to partnerships – and why learning the written and unwritten rules will be necessary
    • Why you should know what the financial health of your firm looks like when beginning this process
    • If you wait until you are up for partner to take action, you're too late (but you'll now have the tools for the future)!
    • Why you need to be working on your Partnership Resume, and not just hitting minimum numbers when it comes to your billables
    • The types of matters you worked on, as well as how lucrative your clients are to the firm, will be taken into consideration
    • You may not like politics, but campaigning for support in the partnership process is key

    #27: Non-billable Purgatory Aug 08, 2017
    Show notes

I've talked before on this podcast about the need to watch your time, and when it's ok to say "No" to certain opportunities you are presenting with. Today I'm revealing the four main categories of non-billable time that you'll want to plan for in advance, and how you can successfully manage each of them.

Things you will learn in this episode:

    • Be aware of how you plan and manage your non-billable time
    • The role business development plays in your career
    • Whether or not you should be doing pro bono work
    • How being involved in your community will help build your business
    • The one question you should always ask yourself before taking on any task
    • How to determine how much time you actually have to give
    • How to say "No" – and the unintended consequences of doing this

    #25: I Don't Want to Talk About It… Jul 25, 2017
    Show notes

This profession can be dangerous in ways of addiction, mental health issues and the unhealthy behaviors we start developing in law school. We don't want to talk about it, but as an industry, we need to, which is what I'm doing in this episode of the podcast.

Things you will learn in this episode:

    • How easy it is to forget for legal professionals to forget the human side of things
    • Why we really "bury our heads in the sand" and don't acknowledge these issues
    • The reasons behind why certain types of behavior start in law school
    • My thoughts on lawyers and drug use
    • The stigma around mental health issues in lawyers – and why you need to reach out for support
