Episode 120 - Is Cholesterol Good or Bad? Jan 25, 2022
    Show notes

There is a lot of confusion regarding cholesterol, LDL, HDL and the abundant use of statins throughout the world.

Bottom line - We all need cholesterol to survive and if we don’t consume cholesterol, our body will make it on its own.

In fact, your liver makes the bulk of it. Only about 25% of our total circulating cholesterol—LDL or HDL—is tied to what we eat. The amount we absorb from our diet varies widely depending on the food itself, our state of health, and even our genetics.

    In this episode I discuss:

    - 4 measures/ratios to look at when you have a lipid panel

    - The difference between small and large dense LDL

    - Importance of HDL

    - The overuse of statins

    - and if you have high triglycerides, low HDL, or high total cholesterol, getting off sugar and refined carbs becomes the best way to fix this problem.

Thanks to Dr. Bikman and Dr. Lustig for context regarding this episode.

Episode 118 - How to Increase Testosterone! Jan 18, 2022
    Show notes

In this micro episode, I wanted to share some tips that will help boost your testosterone, naturally!

The male body needs to produce the right amount of testosterone in order to maintain optimum physical, sexual, and mental health. This hormone is essential for your fertility, bone and muscle strength – even your mood.

Testosterone levels peak during your late teens but begin to gradually decline once you hit 30. ‘Normal’ testosterone levels can vary widely from person to person.

The symptoms of low testosterone (sometimes called “low-T”) reflect the role that the hormone plays in your body. As testosterone is essential for your fertility, energy levels, muscle and bone strength, low-T can impact these areas of your health.

    You may suffer from:

    • Loss of sex drive and erectile dysfunction
    • Fatigue and problems sleeping
    • Decreased muscle mass and brittle bones
    • Loss of body and facial hair
    • Depression, irritability, or memory loss

Here are some ways to naturally boost testosterone:

    • Improve your sleep. Most of your testosterone is produced and released during sleep. And studies have found that those who sleep less have lower testosterone. Aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night.
    • Exercise regularly – including weight training.
    • One study found that men who undertook resistance training 3 times a week for 4 weeks experienced increased testosterone levels immediately after the workout, and over time.
    • Don’t skip leg day! A study by the Institute of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics hammers this home. It split participants into an arm-only workout group and a leg-and-arm workout group, with results showing that testosterone increases were significantly higher in those exercising their lower body in addition to their upper body.

Here are some of the vitamins and minerals that are crucial for testosterone production, plus extracts that help boost testosterone levels:

    • Vitamin D. Many of us are deficient in vitamin D, the so-called ‘sunshine vitamin’. But this is not just a problem for your overall health. Vitamin D and testosterone are closely connected. According to one study, daily doses of vitamin D can increase your testosterone by 25%.
    • Magnesium. It plays a role in over 300 different enzyme systems, regulating all sorts of different processes in your body. One of those is testosterone production. Studies have found that magnesium supplements increase testosterone – and the results are particularly dramatic in active men.
    • Zinc. Zinc deficiency is a common deficiency that is associated with low T. Studies have shown that zinc supplementation can increase testosterone production. Oysters contain more zinc per serving than any other food.
    • Maca and ginseng. Extracts from the ginseng and maca plants can help to reduce symptoms of low T. While ginseng has been found to possibly boost testosterone production, there’s pretty strong evidence to suggest that maca can boost sperm health and increase libido.

Episode 116 - Can Strength Training Reverse Aging? Jan 11, 2022
    Show notes

In every cell of our body there are hundreds or thousands of mitochondria, they exist in greater quantities in the most active organs and tissues (muscles, heart and brain). Mitochondria are the organelles responsible for energy production in our body. If you always feel tired, if you experience memory loss, if you have frequent muscle pain and if you are one of those people taking medications for cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes and other chronic diseases, it is very likely that your mitochondria are not in “great shape”.

Some other reasons we age faster derive from the constant injuries inflicted to the mitochondria, such as:

    • Chronic stress,
    • lack of sleep,
    • poor eating choices (processed foods),
    • lack of exercise (particularly strength training),
    • alcohol,
    • tobacco, and
    • exposure to pollutants

An amazing study was published in 2007 and was the first human study to demonstrate that strength training can reverse the aging process at molecular level.

The researchers recruited 25 healthy elderly people (mean age 68 years), who already did some type of physical exercise (walking, gardening, tennis, golf, cycling) three to four times a week, and 26 young adults (mean age 24 years) relatively inactive, some of them participating in recreational activities.

The authors identified 596 genes that were differentially expressed between the two age groups. Of the 596 genes, the researchers identified 179 associated with age and exercise that showed a remarkable reversal in their expression profile after six months of resistance training. This literally means that resistance training not only can slow down but also reverse the aging process at the genetic level. The genetic expression of the elderly individuals became similar to those of the younger group. The researchers also noted that mitochondrial dysfunction (closely related to physical inactivity) began to reverse after six months of training.

This study demonstrated for the first time that resistance training can reverse age-related aspects at the gene level!

In short, this fascinating study is basically telling us that it is within our power to increase health and longevity. In this case, the “fountain of youth” is something we know and something that is relatively accessible to everyone – Strength Training.
