Episode 203 - Cook with This Oil for Optimal Health! Nov 15, 2022
    Show notes

This week I discuss the importance of cooking for yourself and how using coconut oil can go a long way in creating optimal health.

Avoid cooking in PUFA's (canola, sunflower, corn and soy oils) and use a stable saturated fat like coconut oil. Here are some reasons why:

    - Has strong anti-fungal and antiseptic effects

    - May strengthen immune system

    - Doesn't interfere with the oxidation of carbs and can provide energy when cellular function is compromised

    - Has antioxidant properties

    - Protects cells against energy failure or toxic insult

    - Stimulates metabolic rate and supports thyroid function

I love using coconut oil not only because of it's health benefits but also it's neutral flavor profile as well! Let me know what you think!

Episode 200 - Prevent Disease and Lose Unwanted Pounds by Removing This Toxin Nov 01, 2022
    Show notes

This week I discuss the importance gut health plays in having optimal health!

Leaky gut plus endotoxins are likely the main causal factor in many of the chronic diseases we see today. New research shows that leaky gut plays a role in everything from anxiety to skin issues to cancer and autoimmune disorders. What can we do to reduce endotoxins in the gut?

    1. Remove everything upsetting to the gut

This could be different depending on the individual. Whenever you eat something that upsets your gut, that’s a sign that you're increasing intestinal inflammation and endotoxin production

    2. Eliminating Gluten

Gluten increases zonulin production, a protein that breaks apart the tight junctions in your digestive tract. Some individuals are more sensitive than others.

    3. Remove Lectins

Lectins are proteins that the plant uses to protect itself. They’re found in all foods, but in very high quantities in beans (legumes) and grains .

    4. Remove Vegetable Seed Oils

Vegetable Oils such as Sunflower, Canola, Peanut (to name a few) when heated cause oxidation and inflammation in the body.

    5. Reduce Stress

Prioritize 10-15 minutes of meditation to help reduce stress.

    6. Eat Nutrients that Support the Gut

Eating nose to tail provides almost all the nutrients you would need.

Focusing on reducing endotoxins in the gut can play an integral part in preventing disease and losing those unwanted pounds.

    Have a great day!

Episode 198 - Will Losing Weight Decrease Your Metabolism? Oct 25, 2022
    Show notes

Losing weight will decrease your metabolism! So what can we do to prevent this from happening?

    - Don't restrict calories too much!

    - Resistance train 2-3 times a week

    - Keep protein high to help build muscle and speed up metabolism

    - Eat whole single ingredient foods (food quality matters)

So be sure to focus on these principles if you are looking to lose weight and maintain or increase your metabolic rate!

Episode 196 - Do We Need More Protein as We Age? Oct 18, 2022
    Show notes

This week I discuss 3 studies (referenced below) which showed evidence that older individuals tend to experience more anabolic resistance, meaning a decreased sensitivity and capacity of muscle protein synthesis. They reported that higher protein intakes will help improve the situation.

Based on one study, the following conclusions were drawn. At rest, the optimal whey protein dose for non-frail older adults to consume, to increase myofibrillar MPS above fasting rates, was 20 g. Resistance exercise increases MPS in the elderly at all protein doses, but to a greater extent with 40 g of whey ingestion. These data suggest that, in contrast to younger adults, in whom post-exercise rates of MPS are saturated with 20 g of protein, exercised muscles of older adults respond to higher protein doses.

This is more proof that the best anti-aging practice is to focus on a higher protein intake as we age (1 gram per pound of desired weight) and to embrace resistance training on a weekly basis as well. Have a great day!

Episode 194 - Effectiveness of Early Time-Restricted Eating for Weight Loss! Oct 11, 2022
    Show notes

This week I discuss the benefits of a recent study comparing early time restricted eating vs later in the day eating. There have been a few recent studies looking at eating earlier in the day and how it can be effective for weight loss, fat loss, blood pressure and even mood regulation.

The author of this study wrote. “We tested a version of TRE called early TRE (eTRE), which involves stopping eating in the afternoon and fasting for the rest of the day. Because key circadian rhythms in metabolism — such as insulin sensitivity and the thermic effect of food—peak in the morning, eTRE may confer additional benefits relative to other forms of TRE.”

*The study participants who followed early time-restricted eating lost an additional 2.3kg compared with other participants. They also experienced a reduction in diastolic blood pressure.Time-restricted eating was also found to be more effective at improving mood disturbances among study participants.

So I recommend trying eTRE for individuals who perhaps have plateaued in their weight loss efforts or are just looking to mix it up and do some self-experimentation. In this study the window of eating was between 7am and 3pm which might or might not work well for your schedule. You could try it a few days a week and do a normal schedule of eating the other days.

Let me know if you have any questions! Email me at brian@briangryn.com
