    ABOUT THE HOST

Jay Dhillon is a serial entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist based in the UK with a proven track record of growing businesses from start-up to success- and helping others do the same. From humble beginnings, Jay grew his first business from 0-500 employees and three locations, racking up sales of over £30 million – all without any investment other than a small amount of savings. The business went on to acquire major clients such as Landrover, Jaguar, Toyota and New Look, to name a few.

Its huge success inevitably brought about outside interest, and at the age of 33, Jay eventually sold the company to a London investment firm in Doyen Resources. Today, Jay owns several businesses in different sectors and helps entrepreneurs achieve success.

A calling to give back and help others led to Jay being chosen for the highly-coveted role as a Prince’s Trust mentor, where his achievements were marked by a personal invitation to Buckingham Palace to meet Prince Charles.

After helping several young entrepreneurs to success as a mentor for the Trust, Jay’s burning desire to bring his wisdom and knowledge to a wider audience ultimately triggered the concept of The Business Mentor Podcast.

Jay feels that anyone can achieve success in business with the right advice and mentoring and is now sharing his knowledge with his growing audience via his podcast.

In the UK alone, 95% of business fail within the first five years, and Jay’s aim is to reduce that number.

Backed with the hard-earned knowledge and experience from his time in business, The Business Mentor Podcast will share Jay’s personal business lessons as well those of other successful entrepreneur guests who share their wisdom and secrets on the show.

Make Meetings Great Again! Jun 06, 2019
    Show notes

How you structure your meeting will determine the overall productivity and success.

Jay discusses a common question he is frequently asked

Why don’t my meetings produce results!?

Listen in as Jay discusses the difference between Chit-Chat and Business, why you need both and where to utilise each effectively to ensure your meetings are productive and successful.

    • Chit-Chat
Meeting for a coffee/chit chat too informal. A chit chat is a chit chat, social and brand building but not business strong. The lack of planned action, topics or dedicated outcomes makes it difficult to move away from the informality.
    • Business
Go into the discussion as a proper meeting. Decide ideally a formal location, with agenda, and relevant assets & resources. That way you will have clarity, you’ll know what your structure is and the attendee/s will know what is and bring relevant questions and resources with them

Meetings are like dates; you don’t want to go for the kill on the first date. Get to know each other, build foundations. Then in the second meeting utilise this and get down to business

Don’t expect results if you’re just having a conversation. I am not saying forget the chit-chat but use it properly. Clearly structure and format your meetings. Both are necessary but use them properly.

Multimillionaire Property Developers Scale from 1 to 161 Properties in 4 Years; Andi Cooke & Lloyd Girardi of Whitebox Property Solutions Share Their Story May 30, 2019
    Show notes

Today on the episode of The Business Mentor Podcast, we hear the stories behind the success of White Box Property Solutions from the Founders Lloyd Girardi and Andi Cooke as they answer some questions from Jay. Lloyd and Andi were working in very different fields before they went on a risky journey of building their own property development company. They had little to no knowledge about it, but it turned out very well since they were willing to learn along the way.

Aside from stories on building and growing their business, we also get to hear some great tips for aspiring business owners out there. Discover how you can get most out of mentorships, how to have the right mindset, why you need a great team, and why you need to create vision boards from Lloyd and Andi, so start tuning in.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Lloyd and Andi were two different industries before they decided to start a property company together. Lloyd was in the lighting industry while Andi was in the construction industry.
      • It helped that they were both naïve and ready to learn new things when they stepped in the property industry.
    • It’s best to approach people who have already has years of expertise and experience in property developments if you are just starting. There’s a lot of risks that you need to take so as much as possible, you should be backed up by the right team so that you make the right move.
    • Andi and Lloyd’s top tip for those who want to start a business is to make your business ‘YOU’. Make sure that it suits your personality. Copying somebody else doesn’t give off a good result and self-fulfilment.
    • If you really want to see the outcome from what you’re learning from your mentor, you have to put the work in.
    • When is enough, enough? Lloyd says they don’t really have a specific end goal, aside from improving themselves and growing their businesses.
    • Having a vision is essential, so you’ll know what direction you’re heading to. You can create your vision board, which can be in video, audio or print format, and it will effectively remind you to focus on your goals.

    BEST MOMENTS

    • “Sometimes, you just need to put a step forward every day and just keep moving towards whatever the goal is, isn’t it?” – Andi
    • “If someone’s already done it the way that you would do it anyway, leverage their knowledge.” – Jay
    • “Do what feels right. You are your own individual brand.” – Jay
    • “The answer and results you get are as good as the questions you’re gonna ask.” – Lloyd
    • “Get in the right knowledge and put the work in.” – Jay
    • “Money is everything, but it’s how you spend that money that makes you happy.”

Let’s Talk About Your Mental Health May 23, 2019
    Show notes

Challenges will always be part of the journey if you want to be a successful entrepreneur. How you deal with them dictates how your outcome will be.

In this episode of The Business Mentor Podcast, Jay discusses how important is caring for your mental health on your entrepreneurial journey. If you manage not to let challenges get the best of you, evaluate what happened, and move on from them, then you won’t ever be side-tracked in achieving your goals. What could help to maintain your mental well-being is having a support group, a group of like-minded people who can help and listen to you. It can be a mentor, a colleague, or a loved one. Discover how Jay found his support group and how you can find yours too when you start listening in.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • It was quite an experience for Jay when he was just starting as an entrepreneur. His experience in business was to be considered very young to experience a recession. He didn’t know what to do. His company of 300 staff members had to shrink to a team of barely 50 contractual workers.
    • When the time came that he knew he couldn’t do this on his own, he opened up to his mentor about his woes and struggles. He asked for advice and guidance. After talking to him, his mindset over it changed for the better.
    • Build your support network with like-minded people who’ll be there for you even through tough times. It should be easy to open up with them if needed to, and vice versa.

    BEST MOMENTS

    • “You need to be honest with yourself if you’re going through tough times. If I didn’t open up for that particular time, then what would have happened is I would have just kept on going until I have a serious breakdown.”
    • “The best people I know, the way they got through is to being open and honest.”
    • “You’re gonna get challenges, that is without a doubt.”

    Jay's 3 Steps to Business Success May 16, 2019
    Show notes

Before we start, Jay wants to express his utmost thanks to all who participated in the recently concluded Entrepreneur Secrets to Success Event held on the last 10th of May 2019. Jay is hoping to see your faces again on his next projects soon!

In this episode of The Business Mentor Podcast, as a ‘Thank You’ gift to all of you, Jay shares his own Three-Step Business Model. Yes, this is the one he has been using for a long time with his businesses, so we know that this model works! What puzzles most start-ups is how they can make their clients or customers stick with them; to move from availing the free stuff to availing the high ticket you offer, what’s the missing piece? Jay suggests you value the importance of the middle ground, the 2nd step in his business model. It’s a make-or-break step, so discover how this can benefit you when you tune in!

    KEY TAKEAWAY

Step 1: Your first entry item to your client got to be free and of value.

    • Many of the resources can be easily googled and are available for free. And, if you’re trying to attract your audience, consider offering a full experience on their first time. Show them the value they’ll get if they plan to stick with you in the future.

Step 2: You must over-deliver on the second item and offer a fixed fee.

    • This middle ground is significant. Clients will feel that they’re money is worth investing on you if they think that they’re getting more of what they’ve expected.

Step 3: The third thing should be a high ticket.

    • You’ve shown them how much value you can offer, so it’s acceptable now to charge them with your chosen price. They’ve already seen and understood how difficult it is that you do.

    BEST MOMENTS

    • “In any business, you gotta think about making sure that the first thing you do… the free item is really, really of value.”
    • “To do this, I recommend you sit with your mentor or someone who has experience in the game.”
    • “Because everything’s free and everything’s out there, you can’t just say, ‘Well, I’m gonna give a small version of what I can do for free.’ You gotta go full in.”

How to Stay Focused And Productive in Busy Times ....! May 02, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode, Jay explains how important taking breaks away from your work is. He also covers the benefits of taking small breaks away from work and how they can benefit you in several ways.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Taking complete breaks from work can change the game

    • When you’re working hard and are so busy that you don’t even consider taking time off, taking a break can be a massive game changer.
    • I remember talking to my mentor when I was absolutely flat out and he told me I need to take a break, I felt like I couldn’t because I was so busy. But I later realised that not taking a break would lead me to crash and burn.
    • You need to take breaks to notice the little things that can make a huge difference to your pathway.
    • Take a day or two to relax and take a break to reflect on what you’ve done and achieved even if your mind is telling you you can’t.
    • Mini breaks will help give you clarity of thought which is partially why you see all of these successful people playing golf, not only for Networking but to relax and have a break from their work.
    • If you’re going through a tough time or a massive challenge, take some time away from your work. This doesn’t need to be a holiday or a big getaway, it could just mean an evening away from work enjoying some ‘you time’.
    • Allow your body to be recharged, we as entrepreneurs think we’re machines that can keep going. However, we’re more like batteries and we need to be recharged, breaks will enable this.

Benefits of taking breaks from work

    • You will have thoughts come into your mind that wouldn’t have come in there if you were thinking about your day to day work.
    • It will give you the chance to refocus on your work, when you come back you’ll be refocused, which will give you a clearer mind and enable you to work more effectively.
    • Breaks will benefit your health as your mind and body isn’t build to be stressed all of the time. It gives your body the chance to relax and recover.
    • You’re able to become more creative when your mind is away from your work.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Taking a break is sometimes the biggest game changer’

‘Little things will be difficult to discover if you’re doing 100mph’

‘1:1 Mentoring is such a game changer for me and you get that focus of thought’

‘Take time out of your day to take a mini break’

‘Technically clarity will get you through problems’

‘As much as you think you can’t take time off, you can.’

The business went on to acquire major clients such as Land Rover, Jaguar, Toyota and New Look, to name a few.

Its huge success inevitably brought about outside interest and at the age 33, Jay eventually sold the company to a London investment firm in Doyen Resources.

In the UK alone 95% of business fail within the first five years and Jay’s aim is to reduce that number.

Backed with the hard-earned knowledge and experience from his time in business, The Business Mentor Podcast will share Jay’s personal business lessons as well those of other successful entrepreneur guests who share their wisdom and secrets on the show.

The Power of Unity, Mentors and Leverage for the Entrepreneur Apr 25, 2019

The Power of Unity, Mentors and Leverage for the Entrepreneur

‘If you are not happy in what you are doing and feel you’ve got something inside you about wanting to have your own business then go and do it’

Catherine Turner and Jay Dhillon are in conversation discussing their entrepreneurial journeys and experience as mentors in this engaging episode.

They share a passion for mentoring and giving back, helping the next generation of entrepreneurs to achieve their dreams.

Listen in and be inspired to take action and begin your entrepreneurial journey.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    The importance of Leveraging

    • Learning to leverage is a lifestyle and being able to do it effectively is beneficial to your mental health.
    • A lot of people don’t leverage in the right way or understand what leveraging is. It's important to leverage and systemise in the right way to gain the most impact.
    • Leveraging your lifestyle to make memories with your children and family is what is important. These memories are what we have and hold throughout our lives.

    The journey of an Entrepreneur

    • If you are not happy in what you are doing and feel you’ve got something inside you about wanting to have your own business then take action and do it.
    • You need to keep going through the tough times, this is when you will be most challenged but is an opportunity for learning.
    • Do little things every day and momentum will build.
    • Catherine – there was a moment of realisation that I could either be stuck in a job I hated and didn’t feel passionate about and wasn’t working or I could go my own way and do something I felt passionate about, that’s how it all started, and property was my entry point.
    • Jay - I didn’t push my brand, I just wanted to build a business, but it is important to build your brand so getting out there and letting people know who you are and what you are doing is important to build your credibility and legacy.
    • The journey as an entrepreneur is about change, as the journey progresses your goals alter to be more focused on the long term and making a difference, contributing giving back

    Mentoring and Mentees

    • A mentor has been there, done it, seen it, they can help you get through it.
    • It’s about sharing and passing on the 'knowledge'.
    • You have to have built a business before you are a mentor, it makes you more valuable.
    • You have got something to give because you’ve gone through it.
    • Having a mentor is about investing in yourself. When you are looking for a mentor, find someone who is living the lifestyle, you want someone who has achieved what you want to achieve.
    • It’s a 2-way thing both the mentor and mentees must be invested in making it work.
    • Mentoring and coaching are powerful because they hold you accountable.
    • As a mentor, it’s important for mentees to achieve, to have made something.
    • It's all about sharing and there is great unity in doing that.
    • If you are not happy in what you are doing and feel you’ve got something inside you about wanting to have your own business then go and do it.
    • You can achieve it in different ways, lots of people think you have to have money to make money but there is always a way to make money.
    • Whatever it is there is a way to start if you have it within you, an entrepreneurial spirit.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘The power is in the action you take’

‘It’s your story that they are buying into’

‘You need to go through some challenges to learn and develop’

‘Go through your journey and when you are ready then undertake mentoring’

‘Hiring into chaos only creates more chaos. Making sure you have the systems in place and a plan is vital’

Interview With US Actress & Movie Star Rachele Brooke Smith, Talking About Mindset For Success Apr 18, 2019
    Show notes

It’s time to be the hero of your own life story.

Aren’t you tired of always playing as the prey, anyway? Life gets tough, and it’s you, and you alone, who could pull you out of that phase. Now’s the time to build the right mindset to prepare yourself on your ultimate success.

In this episode of The Business Mentor Podcast, Jay talks to Rachele Brooke Smith, an actress and the Founder of the Disruptive Movement. Discover today the different techniques you can use so you can disrupt your thoughts and empower yourself for the next significant steps you’ll do that will change your life. Being the best version of yourself does not require extravagance; use your power within you and take control of your mind, body, and soul to get there.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

    • While young Rachele’s friends were attending parties, she was busy preparing for personal development conferences. This was her childhood. It was full of fascination with how the mind works and how important mindset is.
    • Rachele started The Disruptive Movement to help and empower everyone so that they become the hero in their life stories. It’s how you perceive and react to what’s happening to you that could either make or break what you want for your future.

Techniques in Having the Mindset for Success:

    • Be open-minded. If there’s a part of you, your tasks, or your goals that is not serving you or not making you happy about yourself, then be open on trying new things.
    • Have a healthy routine. Create patterns in your daily life depending on what you want your life to be. If you want to be successful and happy in the future, then you have to win at things that you’ll do today.
    • Harness your power of creativity. We’re all creative beings. Choose to use your creativity to produce compelling experiences to help other people.
    • Remember that you are what you consume. What books, podcasts, and videos are you consuming? Who are the people you are following in social media? What are the foods you’re eating?
    • Practice gratitude. On the end of each day, Rachele records herself speaking about things that she’s grateful of. She relistens to them regularly to remind herself and reaffirm her visions while on her journey.
    • Start with a tiny habit. Being disciplined and deciding to make tiny habits every single day can bring a massive benefit to your life right now and in the future.
    • Create value for others. In the digital world, where most people consume their time online, and there’s a lot of noise when it comes to content, it’s best that you aim to be one of helpful voices even to a small group of people.
    • Learn about the Release Meditation Technique. This leaves everything in the past and opens you up to new possibilities.
    • Have a mentor. Find someone who could help you to refocus when you get lost along the way, to brainstorm your ideas with, and also to reinforce all your visions.

    BEST MOMENTS

    • “When I first started acting and dancing, that’s the first time I felt alive.”
    • “All the things that I thought the worst that happened to me along the journey ended up being the best things.”
    • “If you keep doing what you’re doing, you keep getting what you’re getting.”
    • “Vulnerability is a superpower.”
    • “What has been helpful is to say, ‘I’m so grateful I’m in the process of becoming my strongest and most beautiful self.’”
    • “Anytime I feel fear, I am rewiring myself so that I feel it, acknowledge it, and be disruptive anyways.”
    • “If you really want to change, you have to have a lot of pain around it.”

Don't Say Yes to EVERYONE! Apr 11, 2019
    Show notes

Should You say Yes to Every Customer or Client?

Should you say yes to every customer or client?, This is a frequently asked question by entrepreneurs and in this episode, Jay provides not only the answer but advice on how you can consistently qualify your customers and clients to make sure they are right for you and your business.

Listen in now to hear how to build an avatar of your ideal customer and use it effectively to move your business forward.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • When you start a business you are at your most vulnerable and if you get the wrong type of customer or wrong company then it can stress to both you and your business.
    • You need to qualify a client and make sure they are the right fit for you.
    • Creating an avatar of your ideal customer can be an effective way to establish who your ideal customer is.
    • It will provide you with a checklist of what you want to work with and will represent your ideal customer.
    • You will find it easier to recognise what is and isn’t a good client for you and your business
    • It’s important to recognise there is a difference between a bad client and a difficult client.
    • A bad client will be someone who doesn’t pay, doesn’t give the information you need and their expectations are not what they should be.
    • A difficult client will be someone who asks lots of questions.
    • It's important to not say yes to any customer or client unless you are really sure they are the type of people you want to work with.
    • Work on a sales funnel so you are bringing in a continuous flow of new customers and clients then you are in a position to decide who you say yes or no to.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘It’s so much easier if you have identified your ideal customer by creating an avatar’

‘Not only am I checking if I can help them I’m also working out if I want to work with them’

‘We don’t say yes to everybody’
