He also covers how trying to get your product perfect at the beginning start of your business can have a negative affect on you and your business. Listen to this episode to find out more…!

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Perfection can harm your business when starting off. Don’t over think things before you go out and test your market.
    • Get your product out as fast as possible, it doesn’t need to be perfect. As long as it works and solves the problem get it out.
    • Start making some sales then use the money from the sales to make it better. Sometimes your customers don’t want it perfect.
    • Ask yourself whether it’s something your customer loves or if it’s something you love. Your customer need to be the one who loves the product.
    • If you’re in the mind-set where you can get it to a level where it works, then you get it out there, you’ll always have a completion date.
    • If you think it’s got to be perfect, then you’re never going to be happy. You won’t take risks to gain feedback either.
    • You wont be able to delegate because you want things to be perfect in your own way which will keep you stuck in the same moment and unable to rest.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘The customer decides whether your product is good or not’.

‘Perfectionism usually occurs when you’re in love with the business idea’.

    ‘Perfection means you’re never done’.

    ABOUT THE HOST

Jay Dhillon is a serial entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist based in the UK with a proven track record of growing businesses from start-up to success- and helping others do the same. From humble beginnings, Jay grew his first business from 0 to 500 employees and three locations, racking up sales of over £30 million – all without any investment other than a small amount of savings. The business went on to acquire major clients such as Landrover, Jaguar, Toyota and New Look, to name a few.

Its huge success inevitably brought about outside interest, and at the age of 33, Jay eventually sold the company to a London investment firm in Doyen Resources. Today, Jay owns several businesses in different sectors and helps entrepreneurs achieve success.

A calling to give back and help others led to Jay being chosen for the highly coveted role as a Prince’s Trust mentor, where his achievements were marked by a personal invitation to Buckingham Palace to meet Prince Charles.

After helping several young entrepreneurs to success as a mentor for the Trust, Jay’s burning desire to bring his wisdom and knowledge to a wider audience ultimately triggered the concept of The Business Mentor Podcast.

Jay feels that anyone can achieve success in business with the right advice and mentoring and is now sharing his knowledge with his growing audience via his podcast.

In the UK alone, 95% of business fail within the first five years, and Jay’s aim is to reduce that number.

Backed with the hard-earned knowledge and experience from his time in business, The Business Mentor Podcast will share Jay’s personal business lessons as well those of other successful entrepreneur guests who share their wisdom and secrets on the show.

How to Effectively Post on Social Media to Grow Your Business and Brand Oct 10, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of The Business Mentor Podcast Jay provides tips on how to post on social media effectively and what is important to remember when posting on different platforms. Listen to this episode to find out more!

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The quality of your content matters more than the quantity of your posts on social media.
    • Social media’s allowed people to market their products and services for free and widely. But because it’s free, it allows people to post at any time which can cause people to post irrelevant content.
    • Although it’s important to be consistent, posting content that has no value in it, is not likely to get much engagement.
    • If you’re thinking about getting into social media then think about what you’re posting carefully before posting, choose quality over quantity.

    BEST MOMENTS

    ‘Quality over quantity”

    “1 or 2 posts a week rather than 4 a day”

    “Think about what you’re posting”

Ask Jay Anything! Is Facebook & Instagram The Best Platform For Social Growth Oct 03, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome back to the Business Mentor Podcast! In todays episode, Jay takes a listener question from Anton. Anton is starting a new journey teaching football within his local community. Anton wants to know

“I just want your advice in terms of advertising. Is Instagram and facebook the best way of doing that OR are there better platforms?”

Simply put, Jay says Instagram and Facebook are the go-to platforms of choice. Start with Facebook: Create a page and/or group for your brand/company and start populating it with content. You want to coral your audience and community into places you can interact and share with easily. Show activity, results and push interaction with followers to encourage better reach and exposure. Do the same with other platforms, including Instagram. Create a page/profile and start creating content for others to like, share and interact with.

Jay strongly suggests you start organically. Test and observe your existing engagement and growth to get a much better idea of which platform (and paid-for choice) could yield the best results.

Going Into Debt is NOT Cool; Why You Shouldn't Take a Loan to Start a Business Sep 26, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode Jay explains whether starting up a business with debt or by taking out a loan is a good idea. There are a lot of stories where successful entrepreneurs have said they’ve been in tonnes of debt and got themselves out of it because of their business and the debt’s helped them get to where they are. Jay explains why you shouldn’t listen to them and expresses his views on this subject…

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • There are lots and lots of stories where you hear people have been in tonnes of debt and now have a successful business and a lot of the time they lead you down a path where you may think you need to be in debt to start.
    • Do not take a loan or credit to start a business because 99% of these people who take out loans to start a business fail.
    • A good type of debt would be when you’re using the loan to buy an asset that brings in money. An example of this is property.
    • The best way to start up is to save the money yourself and know that you’ve worked hard for tat money rather than taking out a loan.
    • If you don’t have any money, then get your first client before starting your business, then scale up from there. Start slowly then build slowly and when you get the cash flow start investing.
    • You can save money up by selling things on Ebay or online. You can work really hard part time to get enough money to be able to save.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Having a start up business is hard but having a start us business and debt is even harder.’

‘You can raise money through joint ventures’

‘If you really believe in your product or service then it should sell that straight away’

‘Getting into debt is not cool, especially if you’re buying the wrong things’

Do You NEED an Office? Where Are You Most Productive? Sep 19, 2019
    Show notes

Does an entrepreneur really need an office? Or would it be okay to work remotely from home?

The choice depends on your productivity and current circumstances. If budget seems tight, then it’s best to work remotely at the beginning but then, it will require a certain discipline not to get distracted and not to slack off. That’s why Jay still suggests getting an office as soon as everything becomes stable.

Let Jay help you today in this episode of The Business Mentor Podcast on deciding where your workplace should be and more. Start tuning in.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Understand the present circumstances. Your working condition and working environment might be suitable only for the office setting. If you’ve got a tight budget or doesn’t see expanding soon, then consider working remotely to save up and increase the cash flow.
    • Some entrepreneurs have a difficult time being productive at their own homes, so as much possible, they choose to separate the work from home by getting an office.
    • Jay suggests that when the time is right—when you already got the budget—it’s time to get your own office.
    • Look for service buildings in your area.
    • When signing a lease, make sure you got a get-out clause.
    • Be consistent with your business hours.
    • Get whiteboards where you can write your KPIs.

    BEST MOMENTS

    • “Challenge yourself. What’s your bigger vision?”
    • “Consistency always win over talent or anything else.”

How to be Proactive in Business During Brexit Uncertainty Sep 12, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of the Business Mentor podcast Jay discusses his thought on Brexit and how it’s going to affect business. He also gives some tips and advice on how to prepare for big changes that will affect business such as Brexit.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • 3 years ago I didn’t believe that people would vote Brexit.
    • Think long term about your business decisions and think about your businesses strategy before you make any decisions.
    • The property market will pick back up again so think long term and you never know what’s going to happen so look at your own strategy and where you are then make decisions based on what your circumstances are.
    • Look at the opportunity that Brexit is going to bring rather than the negatives.
    • Look at what other investors are doing especially people like Warren Buffet. Watch what your mentors are and aren’t doing and replicate them.
    • There are so many amazing platforms now that are free where you can get information out there easily.
    • Don’t wait for things to happen such as waiting for Brexit because you don’t actually know how long it’s going to take to affect things. Brexit’s been happening for 3 years now, imagine all of that growth you have missed out in the past 3 years because of holding back because of Brexit.
    • Have a buffer so when the bad times do some you wont completely sink. Start saving when your money’s good.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘You can’t run around with the panic of things that you can’t control.’

    ‘What’s you long term strategy?’

‘As long as you’re growing long term, compound growth will get you there.’

‘Generally speaking, the opportunity’s there for the taking’

‘Business changes all of the time and you and your business will have to adapt.’

‘Winners will be the one’s who are prepared and always looking for the opportunity.’

Which is The Best Business Model to Build? Sep 05, 2019
    Show notes

Jay discusses the business model that he believes is generally the best at the moment and why. One of the main reason for having a reoccurring business model is because it makes your business more attractive to investors or people who may want to buy your business. You could introduce this model to your current model too without having to start over. Listen to this episode to find out more!

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The most lucrative models on the market are reoccurring. E.g. Netflix. This is much like a subscription based model where their revenue is monthly. These often charge less money however are generating monthly revenue.
    • Having a reoccurring business model made the business a lot more attractive to buyers than having a model where our revenue came from constant of off deals.
    • The other models do work and can work really well but over all in general the best model, I would say, is the reoccurring.
    • Check out the 30-day business challenge that I did with Luca Gallone where we set up a reoccurring business model using a white label piece of software.
    • What most people do is have a bit of both where there is a fixed cost as well as a reoccurring cost.
    • In your business now is there a subscription or monthly charge that you can build in?

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Reoccurring type of business is more appealing to an investor or someone who wants to buy your business.’

‘Always be interested in reoccurring business models’

    ‘Test the market itself’

‘When you have low fees people are more likely to come back’

    • Sometimes it takes a tough period in your life to make you realise the value of the people you have in your life.

A calling to give back and help others led to Jay being chosen for the highly-coveted role as a Prince’s Trust mentor, where his achievements were marked by a personal invitation to Buckingham Palace to meet Prince Charles.

Top Tips to make your new business a success… Aug 22, 2019
    Show notes

Time and time again there are people who don’t make the effort to begin with and don’t do their due diligence before jumping into the deep end when starting a business. They usually end up wasting a lot of time and money, here are tips on how to avoid this issue…

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • If you think of this amazing idea, ensure what you’re thinking is really what the customer will like or want a lot too.
    • Have an idea where you know there are clients and customers that will definitely buy your products or services. You can do this by ensuring you’ve done all your market research.
    • Work within the industry first or work alongside someone who has loads of experience in that market before you take the jump with your own idea.
    • If you’re looking to open up a hairdressing salon and don’t have any experience, then you should rent per chair so you don’t have to hire any people yourself.
    • Run some ads in the area on social media to see how high the demand is first.
    • Don’t sign a lease for more than 1 year when starting off.
    • Once you’ve got an idea, stress test it to check how much money you can make and look at examples of other people within your industry in your area. You could mystery shop which will also help you.
    • Go to networking events and talk to people within the industry, get yourself into groups on social media and stay well connected with lots of people within your industry. Have them all give feedback on your ideas and gain other ideas or improvements for your idea.
    • Be part of a mastermind or reach out to your mentor to see what they think.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘We get really excited and jump straight in but the failure rate is massive.’

    ‘Do your market research’

‘You may think it’s a really good idea but how much demand is there for it?’

‘If you do your research properly, the chance of success is so much higher.’

‘Before you spend a penny, check the demand out, make sure the demand’s there.’

    ‘Test the marketing using ads.’
