You’ve heard us recommend playing “Stupid Idea Time” in order to come up with new ideas and new paths for yourself. But when it comes down to choosing one, how do you start singling out the genius from the stupid? Just ask yourself one question: What if it works? When you start imagining the end result of what your day-to-day life would look like if your idea works, you start to see if it’s actually going to get you to the results you had hoped for—and that’s what separates the stupid ideas from the brilliant.

    In This Conversation We Cover:

    315: Jamie Metzl | Hacking Darwin & Imagining a Better Future Dec 28, 2020
    Show notes

Jamie Metzl is a technology and healthcare futurist, geopolitics expert, and the author of “Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity.” He is the smartest, craziest, and most interesting guy that I’ve ever interviewed — really, he’s who I hope to be when I grow up — and he paints a vision of the future that is both more informed and more hopeful than most.

Jamie previously served in the U.S. National Security Council, State Department, Senate Foreign Relations Committee and as a Human Rights Officer for the United Nations in Cambodia, and in February 2019, he was appointed to the World Health Organization expert advisory committee on developing global standards for the governance and oversight of human genome editing. This dude knows his stuff, he knows how to have fun, and I can’t think of a better way to end the very weird year than by imagining a better future.

    • [13:00] Nature, nurture, and fate

313: Fri-Date | How To Get Through Inevitable Pivots In Life & Business Dec 18, 2020
    Show notes

    Today’s Topic: Pivoting

At some point, we all end up finding something that works and just sticking with it — we get comfortable and complacent, and as a result, we stop trying new things, whether that’s in our business or in our personal life. But if you’re never changing things up, you’re never going to get better. That’s why I’m always asking myself, “What can I do to make my life just 10% better?” If the experiment doesn't work, I stop and shift gears. And we can all benefit from developing a system for trying new things and seeing what works instead of just settling with the same old routine. If you don’t, you’re going to end up just living life by default.

    In This Conversation We Cover:

    • [02:47] Not screwing up what’s already successful
    • [07:09] Finding success through a perceived failure
    • [11:46] Being willing to abandon something that isn’t working
