FTN Episode 226 – Adeptus Custodes Part 2 – Tournaments and How to Beat Eldar Feb 09, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We cover a range of topics in this episode. We revisit the Adeptus Custodes book and cover some of the Relics and Stratagems we didn’t before then we get to a difficult topic currently making the rounds about Tournaments. Then we shift gears to cover the Eldar menace!

    Hey all,

In the first part of the show we talk about Adeptus Custodes and just how easy it is to include a potent force of these guys in your current Imperium based army. These dudes are rock solid and stack up pretty well against most armies. They have a wide range of relics and strategems but there are a few clear winners.

The next part of the show we talk about ways to make high stakes tournaments a little more fair for everyone involved. We try to separate Sportsmanship from procedural things that are in control of the TOs. We try our best to not just ‘give solutions’ because everyone has to come to these answers on their own. I just hope that we can help keep the conversation going in a positive way.

Then we get to Eldar.. These guys are strong.. Even more strong when you can combine all of the rules from the Eldar, Ynarri and Dark Eldar into one list without penalties. Still, all hope isn’t lost and we break down three of the main power pieces in the Eldar force and how to counter them. Of course we don’t go over every scenario but we hope you equip you with enough information to find elements in your own index or codex that will help you win more games.

The Finishing Moves segment is sponsored by Frontline Gaming. Their new mats are now hot off the presses and getting ready to be shipped. Please check them out, even if you already have a game mat. Their new styles are very impressive.

Paul goes on and on about Athonian Camonshade. This product is right up there with Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade. Its a versatile product that yields predictable results. What more could you want?

FTN Episode 225 – LVO Recap and Thousand Sons Review Part 2 Feb 02, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We are back fresh off the heels of the Las Vegas Open. It is a wonderful event and I’ll be back next year! Can’t wait. In this episode we do little recap from the Games Workshop Studio Preview and get deeper into the Thousand Sons Codex.

    Hey guys,

Thanks for being patient as we worked through some technical difficulties with the feed last week. I hope it’s resolved.

We talk about the upcoming Codexes – Necrons, T’au and Drukari. We don’t know the exact order but we did get to see a preview of a Necron Cryptek. This all up for viewing on the GW community site. I highly recommend you bookmark that page if you haven’t already.

We focus on the 1k Sons Rubric infantry in this episode and just how durable and ‘tricky’ they can be. The get an extra plus 1 to their save against damage 1 weapons. That may not seem powerful but there are a LOT of damage 1 weapons out there being commonly taken in matched play games.

FTN Episode 219 – Deck the Halls with Red and Green Army Lists Dec 14, 2017
    Show notes

    FTN small square

The talk this week is about army list choices and ‘why’ you would take certain things over others. We talk about this in relation to Blood Angels and Dark Angels armies but you can apply the concepts to any build

    Yo,

Play-test season is upon us! I am anxious to get my Blood Angels on the table and we talk about the list choices in this episode. Chris Morgan brings up some EXCELLENT points on space marine scout bikers. Space Marine Scouts come up a lot in this episode for more than just their ability to fill a detachment requirement.

In the second part of the show we talk about Dark Angels and their master over plasma weaponry.

Specifically we talk about their ability to manipulate the rolls to maximize your damage output and how Grim Resolve might not be as bad as we once thought.

Please let us know how your army lists are shaping up.

Deathwing and Ravenwing, of course, get their own special flavor in this codex but there are new ways to field the ‘Greenwing’ too now that most of the space marine options are available to them.

The Finishing Moves segment is sponsored by Frontline Gaming. Their new mats are now hot off the presses and getting ready to be shipped. Please check them out, even if you already have a game mat. Their new styles are very impressive. If you haven’t already get your tickets NOW for the mega Las Vegas Open.

FTN Episode 218 – Dark Angels Codex Review – Can You Smell What the Rock is Cooking? Dec 09, 2017
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Codex Dark Angels is here, making this a very Angels of Death Holiday Season. We take our first pass at the codex this week. The Finishing Move’s segment this week is about painting black.

    Hi all,

I apologize for the late post here. I’ve been without power due to a snow storm that hit my area. Power has been restored!

The Dark Angels benefit from being all around pretty good at a lot of what is great in 8th edition. They have ways to manipulate morale for themselves and against their opponents, they can move fast, and shoot a lot of plasma. What else could you want?!

Sammael and the Ravenwing Talonmaster are going to present some interesting challenges on the tabletop. If you choose the option where Sammael is riding in Sableclaw he and the Talonmaster are both land speeders that can’t be targeted by the enemy unless they are the closest model (because they are characters.) Sammael even keeps his Ravensword in this mode and keeps his 5 attacks at str 10 if he charges!

The DA Chaplains and the Librarians both impact morale for your opponent in their own ways spreading fear and dread to enemies of the Imperium.

This segment is about painting black. We go over a few tips and suggest an off brand brush.

FTN Episode 217 – Blood Angels Codex Review and MORE! Dec 02, 2017
    Show notes

    FTN small square

BLOOD ANGELS!!! Clearly we’re excited about the new Blood Angel Codex but this is a triple sized episode. This week we have David Annandale join us and the close out the show with a segment with Carl Tuttle from the Independent Characters.

    Hey guys,

We can’t contain our excitement about this new codex. You guys know we are huge Blood Angel fans so getting a hold of this codex is a dream come true.

The BA struggled with synergy in the Imperial Index and one of the best things we see coming from this codex is that more units can stand on their own two feet. They don’t need 50 characters standing around babysitting them.

In part two we’re joined by David Annandale to talk primarily about the novel Ruinstorm but we get to talk to him about a ton of stuff from writing theory to pop culture.

In part three Paul and Carl, from the ICs, chat about playing with the Open War deck from Games Workshop and using Power Level to build army lists. Talking with Carl is always a pleasure.

FTN Episode 216 – How to Win a Grand Tournament Nov 21, 2017
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Planning for big tournaments is hard. That’s an over simplification. Between the rules, differences in format and regional play styles it’s a lot to think about.

    Yo,

I’m giving the regular guys a break this week. This episode features Reece Robins from Frontline Gaming, Val Heffelfinger (a Warzone: Atlanta Champion) and Zach Becker from the London Grand Tournament.

We kick off with Reece talking about the LVO. I pick his brain about mission structure and the overall tournament format. The LVO is the largest 40k singles event in the world. I am incredibly happy to attend this year.

In part 2 we spend time with Val. I got to meet him on his trip through Atlanta to play in our tournament. He brought an unconventional list and has a very interesting approach to the game. I had a great time chatting with him and and his insight is hopefully something you guys appreciate as well.

We close out the show with Zach from the London GT. This is the second largest 40k single tournament in the world. You guys says you wanted to talk about tournaments… We’re bringing you the best. Zach talks about the path to victory for that event. He’s always awesome to speak to and I’m glad we were able to catch up.

FTN Episode 215: Warzone: Atlanta Recap and LVO Prep Nov 16, 2017
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We’re back to Fundamentals in this episode. We start off with WZ: ATL recaps and the move on to tournament competition prep.

    Hey Guys,

In this episode we re-cap Warzone: Atlanta and joke a little bit about how we’ve reached another major tournament milestone by having our very own controversy. Please note that while we keep it light on the air I understand that this is no laughing matter and my apology to those negatively impacted by the incident is from the heart sincere. The integrity of our event is extremely important and something we will always have in focus, year after year.

In the second part of the show I am joined by Chandler and Evan from Facing the Grey Tide Podcast. These guys are big supporters of my show and I am always happy to talk to them and have them on ours.

The second part of the show we talk about how to get ready for a tournament, specifically related to list design but also with a heavy focus on your own hobby standards.

We talk about how important it is to share your work and get comments from others. Maybe you’ll be inspired to do those few extra steps with the support of the great Warhammer community.

    FTN Episode 213 – 8th Edition Tyranid Codex Review – Part 1 Nov 04, 2017
    Show notes

    FTN small square

GW is firing away with another Codex. This time Tyranids are getting some love. We run down the first part of the book and like what we see. In the middle of the show we have an interview with the amazing author Guy Haley!!

    Hey,

Codex Tyranids has a lot of subtlety and synergy to it. The big bugs buff the little bugs, got it! That’s concept number 1 but then things get a lot more subtle. Like all codexes in this edition you have to factor in the Strategems, Hive World attributes and the benefits of all the various detachments.

Genestealers get some love in this book with a totally new deployment mechanic that punishes aggressive opponents. I like this. It allows you to sort of get inside your opponents head and potentially force them to make early game mistakes.

The Broodlord is brutal, like he should be. Old One Eye gets a point increase but he also creeps a little bit in power. We go over this on the show.

In the middle of this episode Chris and Paul sit down with Guy Haley. He was real fun to talk with and we hope you en enjoy it.
