FTN Bonus Episode 26 – American Team Championship – The Facts Jul 17, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

This is not an episode I put out easily. Paul speaks directly with the main TOs from The ATC to talk about the recent controversy and the way forward. This is not our typical episode. If you aren’t curious about what happened or don’t want to hear about some of the ‘issues’ facing competitive 40k play please skip this episode and tune in later this week when we’ll be talking about Kill Team and our personal experiences as players at this wonderful event. The official statement from the ATC in the show notes. I really appreciate these guys sitting down with me to speak about this difficult subject.

    Hey all,

    July 16th, 2018

This press release is in regards to Team Happy being asked to leave this year’s ATC. Any article, podcast, blog, etc. that states otherwise is misinformed and inaccurate in their information and should be disregarded.

The ATC has clearly stated policies on our website and mission pack. It is our responsibility to follow these guidelines in fairness to all players involved. The statements below reflect that we did just that. We also want to take this opportunity to say that it was made obvious to us this year that our slow play, some model policies and our penalty system are in need of a revision. Those revisions are already in the works and in future years will be much stricter.

What happened at the ATC 2018 event concerning Team Happy:

After Round 3 a player with an illegal model was brought to our attention.

According to our policies we issued the player in question a retroactive Round 1 warning and a current round 2 game loss. The model issue had been corrected after game 2 and was not used in round 3 so there was no need for any action in regards to that model in round 3.

As to the question of “Why was a specific points penalty/loss not announced immediately?” Our response is that we had an event already running late and a room full of players who continued to bombard us with their concerns, giving us no chance to think it through clearly. We needed and wanted to make sure that we had the time and clarity to make the right penalty that would have an actual impact on the team penalized and we knew that anything less than a complete removal of the team (at that time) was not going to affect the next round pairings, so we kept the event moving and applied the penalty during rd 3 once we had a few mins to take action.

Also, during round 3 another player on the team had an issue with his opponent which led to a situation with our head judge. Both players were running on high emotions and attitudes were in poor form. The original rumor regarding what had actually happened was found to be false and grossly over-exaggerated on the floor. The truth of the matter was confirmed by our head judge. The over exaggeration that was sweeping the room was that the player had told our head judge to go F*** himself, when what was truly said was “I’m not going to do that” (in regards to the judge’s suggestion to resolve the controversial game issue at hand). The issue was resolved by the players once the TO’s came on the scene and as per our policy, a warning was issued to the player (first warning to that player) and team captain. We want to be clear that had the player actually said that to any of our staff, they would have been immediately ejected and banned from the event. We have a zero tolerance policy for such behavior and we immediately went into a 30 minute conversation with the team captain with full intention of removing the player from our event. Once the truth was discovered, the warning was issued instead of player removal.

During the lunch break (after game 3) we had a very long meeting with the team captain, Tony. An agreement (initiated by the captain) was made that if there were any other issues with anyone on the team, that the team would withdraw from the event. We did not disclose this agreement to the rest of the event players at that time but promised the other captains that we would reveal our decision and intentions in their entirety at the end of the event (which we have just done).

As another layer of enforcement and proactivity, we also posted our head judge as a permanent judge at the team’s tables for the rest of their event.

After round 4 there were questions of slow play brought against the team.

This was reviewed and checked against our slow play policies/guidelines.

After review, all game lengths had met our requirements (minimum 4 turns completed), there was no pattern of games not meeting the required number of rounds and no judges had been brought to the table to address “slow play tactics” during the round.

After round 5 there was a model conversion infraction brought to our attention.

We addressed the issue and ultimately the team was asked to leave our event, with no games played in the final round.

The team did not argue to try and stay in the event, they were courteous to take our request and in order to not create more delays, they waited until the final round was underway to come and discuss all of the details. The team left after a very reasonable and respectful conversation with our staff and TO’s and there were no confrontations of any kind.

We want the community to know that we do not take these situations lightly. What we do at the ATC sets a precedent and a certain standard. A decision like this is no small thing, and no TO ever wants to have to eject someone from their event, let alone five players. We always want to make our decisions with a clear head, in accordance with our policies and guidelines, with integrity and fairness to all players involved. We also want to make it very clear that mob mentality and threats of not coming back to our event were absolutely not a factor in our decision, in fact they hindered us from making the decision sooner as it added an entire other layer of issues to our already full plate. We understand that players were upset; they had every right to be, especially if what was being said around the room was true. We were extremely upset as well and if the situation was what it had been rumored, then we would have removed players immediately, but by taking the time to go to every player directly involved on both sides and getting the facts, and then taking it all and putting it all together, we were able to do our job correctly, clearly and fairly, without anger and influence from outside sources.

In the end, we learn every year what we could have done better, where we failed and where we excelled, we listen to our players input and we adjust from there.

That’s the best we can do, for you, for us and for the community.

We are ready to move forward to better days, higher player standards and the best ATC event ever in 2019 and we hope that you will move forward with us!

    – Shane, Chris and the ATC staff

FTN Episode 244 – Going Infinite With Imperial Knights Jul 12, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

There are some pretty heinous combos out there right now with Imperial Knights, Blood Angels and Astra Militarum. It’s fun to see all this stuff come together. We talk about it in this episode so if you’re looking to get more mileage out of these factions, you don’t want to miss this.

    Hey all,

This is Troop’s last episode for a little while. He is absolutely amazing and we’re grateful for every show he’s been able to attend. When his works schedule changes or he changes jobs, he’ll be back again.

In the first part of the show we jam on this Knights going infinite concept. Basically by taking the AM and BA Relics that allow you Command Point refunds you are able to get a LOT more work out of your Knights. This allows them to basically always attack at full strength, attack again and gives them a bonus to their Invulnerable Saves. Wow.

In the middle part Paul talks to Dave Taylor from the NOVA Open Charitable Foundation. Dave is a great guy and always fun to talk to. He’s doing great work raising money for these charities and I hope you check it out. It is really inspirational seeing how hard we works to collect funds for these charities and, if you’re anything like us, it will have you wanting to do the same. You can find lots of fundraising ideas on https://www.gofundme.com/c/fundraising-ideas if you need help getting started.

The back part of the show we bring back a hobby segment! We talk a little bit about our hobby progress as well.

The newest White Dwarf has a few awesome tutorials and we talk about an interesting way to really brighten up your edge highlighting.

FTN Bonus Episode 25 – Age of Sigmar SECOND EDITION REVIEW – Core Rules Jun 15, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Wow! When this was announced it came almost out of the blue like a bolt of lightning from Sigmar himself. Ricky and Paul comment on the Core Rules and the changes. Games Workshop launched an awesome new Age of Sigmar website you can find here.

    Hey all,

First off… The new box sets coming with this release are amazing. They are so satisfying to hold and open. It really is an experience that ‘feels’ like a whole new world is opening. The Soul Wars box is jammed packed with hot new miniatures to boot!

The game will still see very much familiar to long time players. If you were on the fence before the rules have been expanded but only to make them more clear and streamline play. There are very few ‘clunky’ interactions.

If you play 40k you’ll feel right at home moving miniatures around but Age of Sigmar is still very much it’s own game with a unique world and armies. One of the things I am most impressed with about the recent figure releases is that they are pretty dern unique and evocative of a completely original fantasy setting. You aren’t playing any old fantasy game – you are playing Age of Sigmar.

We touch on this just a little bit towards the end but Summoning things to the table is going to be a big part of this game. Its not free, and you don’t have to pay points from your army generation to get it – you have to EARN it. It will be really cool to see how this plays out.

Magic manifests as physical in this edition and the persistent spells come with big risk and reward. This is gonna be interesting as well. We’ve never seen anything quite like this in a miniature war game like this before. Just about every army can compete in this phase and it should go a long way to helping us live that high fantasy setting. Enjoy!

FTN Episode 241 – Slugga Recap – Upcoming Events and Player Spotlight! Jun 14, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Believe your ears… We have brand new intro music! Let us know what you think. We do a recap for the Slugga, get to talk to Sarah form BattleHaven and sit down with a player for a new Player Spotlight segment.

    Hey guys,

We do a little recap of the Slugga and let you guys know who came away with the top prizes. This ended up being a great event and we’ll definitely be doing it again next year.

We saw a HUGE mix of armies represented with a ton of unique lists. It is really nice to see 8th Edition ‘working as intended’ and allowing for lots of armies to be played. The missions maybe have had a little bit to do with it as well. They seemed to encourage wanting to go second while still allowing for an aggressive play style.

In part two of the show we speak with Sarah Hollingshead from BattleHaven. BattleHaven is a gaming retreat/vacation. It’s not a tournament but more of a celebration of gaming in a scenic resort environment. It pretty darn close to all inclusive and they prepare themed meals as well. Check out the pictures on their site. They are ahhhhhmazing.

In the show we speak about a few links to follow. One is for Scott Switzer. He is a panelist on the Radio Free Isstvan podcast. Click that link! Please check out this tournament as well The other is for the Chicago Open GT.

We close the show with a new segment we’ll certainly continue called the Player Spotlight. This time we feature Matthew Bodnarchuk. He’s a member of the British Columbia Battle Brothers. I played against him at the LVO and had a blast.

FTN Episode 240 – Knights are BACK! Double Sized Special Content Episode Jun 08, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Sorry for the week off but we are back with a special double sized episode. We kick the show off and end it talking about Imperial Knights. In between, we have a special segment with Best Coast Pairings and another with iNcontrol Geoff Robinson. You don’t want to miss this show!

    Hey all,

Please check out our Facebook for coverage on the Louisville Slugga on June 9th and 10th. This will be an ITC Grand Tournament. We have some special trophies to give away and with over 40 people registered there is going to be a lot of competition.

In the first part of the show we talk about Imperial Knights. These guys are going to make a splash similar to how they did when they were released in 6th. I think they are going to be a bit of a ‘gatekeeper’ list and struggle with some of the current tournament format missions. Still.. people are going to play them. They are awesome models.

The second part of the show we do something we’ve never done before… we have a full segment produced OUTSIDE of FTN studios by our foreign corespondent Val Heffelfinger. Val sits down with Paul McKelvy from Best Coast Pairings. He talks about the origins of the App and where they see it moving in the future.

The SECOND special segment is with Geoff Robinson. I pick his brain about how to stay sharp when traveling and his philosophy of list design. He is a pleasure to have on each and every time.

We finish this double sized show talking about knights and how we might go about using them in a real army list. Big ole stompy fun! Val also drops us a link on a tournament he is attending soon. Check it out here

FTN Episode 239 – Are Harlequins Competitive? Yes! May 24, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We dig deeper into the Harlequin codex this episode and ask the question… Is this book competitive? The short answer is yes but we do our best to explain why we think that. More importantly we also give some thoughts on how to field a Harlequin detachment.

    Hey guys,

Please try to make it to the Louisville Slugga on June 9th and 10th. This will be an ITC Grand Tournament. Lots of ITC points to get for you and your 40k club.

We get into the ‘hows and whys’ of fielding Harlequins and discuss the reasons you might consider taking a Troupe squad over an Outrider group of Skyweavers. Like we said in the last show, this army is FAST.

If you are looking to field ‘space elves’ it would be hard to go with a mono army of harlequins but I am not sure the army is designed with that in mind anyway. Things in this army make GREAT support elements. There are also some amazing objective grabbing units as well. If you need to be everywhere on the table and ‘hoard’ armies aren’t your style then you might want to check out this book.

We talk a lot about the Webway Portal and what ‘we’ think the best use of it is. We’re looking to hear your thoughts. Thanks to the folks who wrote in last week to give us their opinion on the subject.

We talk about hobby tutorials in this hobby section. Paul wraps up the 2000 points of Necrons he’s been painting.. Now on to some Harlequins!

FTN Episode 238 – Harlequin Codex Review – Fast and Deadly May 19, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

You guys know I love Harlequins. This army sees big point reductions and some major changes to their weapons. This a complete book with new Psychic Powers, Warlord Traits and Relics.

    Hey all,

Please try to make it to the Louisville Slugga on June 9th and 10th. This will be an ITC Grand Tournament. Lots of ITC points to get for you and your 40k club.

I am really excited to talk about the Harlequins. They were my first 40k army way back in the early days of the game. The army, as a stand alone force, has had it’s up and downs but it is back!

For starters much of this army sees point reductions which are always a good thing. The basic Troupe Player drops a couple of points and their wargear does too. The Death Jester dropped a TON of points. He is still a little clunky to use but if you consider him a ‘combo’ piece I think he has a ton of functionality. They have an ability that lets YOU pick the first model removed when an enemy unit fails a Morale test. It’s a good way to get rid of banners, instruments, heavy/special weapons and sergeants.

Another huge change is that a lot of their vehicle mounted weapons have been changed to Assault instead of Heavy. Hoooooooo Yeah! No neg one to hit on the move. The whole army is fast and now you get to use that speed in games without compromising anything else.

The Hobby Segment will be back next week!

Forge the Narrative is mostly a Warhammer 40k Podcast. Each episode is about an hour long. This ideally gives you something neat to listen to on your way to work, or on the way back home. Maybe you can even listen while you are painting or modeling!

FTN mostly focuses on 40k, but again you will see in the first few episodes we take a severe deep dive into nerdom. These have been a blast to record and I hope they help pass the time for you. FORGE THE NARRATIVE (iTunes Page)

FTN Episode 237 – Come to More Tournaments!! The Slugga and ATC are Calling to You. May 11, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We get back to our roots here and talk about some upcoming tournaments and how to prepare for them. The first half of the show is Paul and Val chatting about several upcoming events and the second half the show it’s Paul and Sean Nayden talking about the ATC.

    Hey guys,

In this episode we talk about the Louisville Slugga on June 9th and 10th and about the ATC Tournament coming up July 13-15th. Please register for these events! This weekend there are two primer event happening for the Slugga. Check them out at the Game Preserve in Circle City and at the host store of the event Heroes Comics and Gaming.

Warhammer 40k is in a great place right now and tournament attendance is at record highs. On the surface this may seem strange due to the shifting on the meta with FAQs and release schedule. It can only be attributed to the FUN that people are having. At the core 40k is a game and the influx of cool rules, models and the desire to bring ‘balance’ to the game is contributing in a big way to the fun we are having playing the game.

Personally, even when I take a loss it is still a lot more enjoyable than in the previous editions. I am reminded that I really have a good time playing with my figures and all the hours leading up up that. The events themselves are getting better too… we have an amazing community.

The second half of the show is all about the America Team Championship. I’m joined by another former champion, Sean Nayden and we talk about some things you may expect to see at this event. We also talk about some ‘types’ of armies you may want to consider if this is your first time going or if you’re looking to improve your standing from last year.

The Hobby Segment will be back next week. We can expect Harlequins soon….. Who knows how to paint those? haha.
