    FTN Episode 264 – Chapter Approved 2018 – Adepta Sororitas Review Dec 08, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Chapter Approved is a shot in the arm for competitive 40k. Instead of going out of their way to make any particular army worse, a whole lot of armies got better. We see radical point reductions for a bunch of struggling factions. We run down some major points and the Sisters of Battle Beta Codex. Check it out!

    Hey hey,

I told you I’d make it up to you for missing as week.. This episode is a little longer than normal we’ve got two special guests. Mike Brandt from the NOVA Open and Thomas Riedy – Goatboy from BOLS.

The first part of the show we get right into the point value changes. It would be impossible to list them all in one show and discuss all the nuanced changes. We hit the high points here but promise to continue to cover these subjects in future shows. We might even get a few bonus shows in this week.

In part two of the show we do a deep dive on the Adepta Sororitas. They lose a trick or two from the index but gain a TON more options. The Exorcist will be feared again.

This is a great week for 40k.. campaign stuff, Marneus Prime, point reductions for your favorite models… wow!

We’re delighted to continue to represent Discount Games Inc as sponsor of our show. They are helping bring FTN to you. Please check them out and support the organizations that support us. Discount Games Inc. offers Games Workshop products at 15% off the suggested retail at their website here. You can send an email to the owner Jay. These guys run a podcast too! Check them out.

We also welcome Firmer Terra this week as a sponsor. I had a great time speaking with one of the founders and I thought their offering would be PERFECT for a lot of gamers out there. Right now they are offering impressive shipping promotions to buyers in the US. Please check them out.

The Finishing Moves segment is back with a new use for Overbrushing.

FTN Episode 263 – Are You Prepared For The New Ork Meta? Nov 29, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Orks are now out in the wild but so far their tournament results haven’t caught up to their power potential. We discuss ways to confront the Ork builds we expect to see on this episode. What’s wORKing for you?

    Hey all,

I am terribly sorry we missed a week. I know the holiday times always cause schedules to shift but I hate missing an episode. I promise we’ll make it up with some bonus content soon. Thanks for your patience.

We ooh and ahh over the Vigilus Campaign news from the recent weekender at the top of the show. The figures, story and just volume of news is amazing. I genuinely didn’t expect to see it all. We even had a new freaking TITAN put on display.

The move to a more Primaris Space Marine look is expected and none us knew when this was going to happen… it seems like the writing is on the wall now with the release of Calgar in a bigger, better, bluer form. I don’t expect all regular marines to just disappear but If you like playing with guys in power armor and haven’t make the switch to Primaris, it’s likely time to get them on your painting table.

In the second part of the show we discuss a few ways to make fighting Orks more manageable. We talk about about a few things you should pack in every army and give a few tips on Target Priority. This shot in the arm for the ‘meta’ is very welcome. We have a new top tier codex that, just by the fact that it exists, may move at least one more codex into that category.

Next week we’ll show off some pics but do yourself a favor and check out their site while this promotion is underway.

FTN Episode 262 – Mob Up Is the Truth Nov 16, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

In this show we finally start to narrow down Ork army list suggestions. We also give a tip or two about fighting against Orks. Later in the show we share a time saving tip for your games that just might net you a sportsmanship point or two as well.

    Hey guys,

Please pardon the difference in audio sound this week. I’m traveling and forced to rely on the laptop mic.

We don’t say this specifically but we discuss ways that you can ‘play into the orc trap of targeting exactly what they expect you to – units they can turn into tanks with a small Command Point investment. It creates a damned if you do, damned if you don’t scenario.

The Orks can pull a little drunken style combat, appearing exposed but really only presenting a false weakness that leaves your first turn of shooting almost completely blanked. When you see them trying this you’ll want to carefully consider your targets.

Later in the show we discuss a cool way to communicate with your opponent to avoid confusion and enhance the play experience for the both of you. With all tips like this you’ve really got to decide what works for you. Are you actually adding value to the game? I think, anything that doesn’t slow the game down and may actually make even the most one sided games seem more enjoyable for all parties is worth taking a look at.

FTN Episode 261 – Hobby Ramblings and Blackstone Fortress 40k Preview Nov 11, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

In the first part of the show we briefly talk about a tournament that happened a couple of weeks ago and do a hobby progress update. Later in the show we give a preview of the 40k datasheets for the Blackstone Fortress models.

    Hi all

We were all fighting colds this week but the show must go on!

We lead the show off with some hobby talk. I get lots of questions about ‘how to start painting an army’ and ‘how do you get it done so fast.’ There are no substitutes to putting the time in but you can make the most of that time. The quick way I was planning to paint Ork Flesh didn’t work out so instead of worrying about it too much or trying to force it to work I changed up quickly and got my first squad of Gretchin table ready.

Paul does a brief tournament recap of his games at the Barnyard Brawl a few weeks ago. The team that puts on the Barnyard did a great job. I had a blast, 5 games against friendly people. I managed to pull down a bracket win and walked away with some great price support.

In part 2 we talk about some of the 40k stats from the Blackstone Fortress. The game comes complete with rules to use ALL of the models in Warhammer 40,000. At the time of recording we had just started to see the previews so expect more to come on this.

FTN Episode 260 – Ork Warboss Edition – Are You Ready For The Green Tide? Nov 01, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

I’m joined by two legendary Warbosses this week, Val Heffelfinger and Marc Parker to talk about how they will be building their Codex Ork Lists. I try to nail them down on Choppa vs Shoota and try to convince them that Shokk Attack Guns are great.. They get me back on the right track.

    Hi Guys

Please get your pre-orders in for the new Ork stuff (and whatever else you’re building) from our Sponsor links below. You’re going to want to beat the Gretchin rush. 60 of these little guys will be your new best friends. Lootas seem like they’re coming back too.

We get into the finer points of building a list with the new codex this week and I like what the Warbosses have come up with. You’re gonna new boyz, you’re gonna need grots and you’re gonna need to get across the table.

Thankfully the Codex helps you do that and gives you cheap and orky ways to keep your figures alive. We hammer this a lot in the show but the Orks with ABSOLUTELY have an impact on the tournament meta. Index Orks were pretty good too. This means even the casual players are going to get a massive power bump. The Orks could end up being the terrors of the kitchen table.

When I say ‘impact on the meta’ I mean that the ynnari lists will need to change. For instance the list I took with heavy flyers this past weekend would quake in it’s boots facing off against orks. The Shining Spears, from other lists, wouldn’t be able to dent the ork list because there aren’t enough ‘high value targets.’ Everything is cheap, everything is killy. The Green Tide is going to be a serious issue.

The Mob Up, Grot Shields and the Force Field Projekta Stratagems are going to insulate the Orks from loosing a lot of kill points in the early game. This is precisely what they need to do to make it across the board and tear heads off. Get ready!

In the middle of the show we talk to the fine folks from the Alliance Open Grand Tournament going on next weekend!

FTN Episode 259 – Orks Codex Review – Get Your Waaaaagh On Oct 27, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Ork players are gonna love this! Your wait for a codex is being WELL rewarded. Talking about the ‘good stuff’ in this book will take more than one episode. There won’t be one way to play these boyz.. this codex has tons of options. Check it out!

    Hey hey,

Val joins the regular crew this week while we run down Codex Orks. Wow… This book is great. The Clan rules are awesome and I think you can make a case while they are all good and competitive. You want mounted orks? You can do it. You want boots all over the place? You got it.

I think we’ll see Battlewagons make a come back. You can make this thing T8 and slap a deathrolla on it for some serious punch. We talk about a couple of Stratagems on the show that help it out also. The ork vehicles allow you to pile in all sorts of boyz – including the Stormboyz.

Stormboyz get Deep Strike back. There are ways to bring these guys screaming onto the table and ways to help them charge then ways to help them fight better. You’ll see these guys too. There is a TON of good stuff in this book. The first list you try to make will likely be way over points, ha.

Speed Freeks will be a thing. One of the obvious builds from the book is a vehicle/bike based rush list. You can reliably get them all the way across the table for a turn 1 charge. Sure, your opponent can see it coming but there may not be much they can do about it. I’m not kidding when I say there are so many good builds in this book.

If you’ve saved your old DeffKoptas you’re gonna be pleased too. They get a massive point drop along with Trukks. Basically, everything you’ve ever wanted to do with Orks you’re going to be able to do now. You want to make giant mobs and pile rules on them? Yeah… get used to seeing 25 lootas in a squad.

FTN Episode 258 – Speed Freeks Will Go FAST. Oct 20, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Another mega episode of FTN… We review the Speed Freeks box set, talk to Battlehaven and to the awesome guys behind Hagglethorn Hollow, currently on Kickstarter.

    Hey all,

Chris and Paul talk about Speed Freeks in the first part of the show. Vroooom! This is a fast and furious game (see what I did there?) centered around the Orks. It sort of a successor to Gorkamorka and includes rules for all the upcoming Ork land based vehicle releases.

The game comes with 6 warbikes, 2 brand new vehicles, rules, dice and a set of Ork Scrap for battlefield terrain. The new vehicles went together without a hitch.

The next segment Chris and Paul sit down with Sarah Hollingshead from Battlehaven. We’ve had Sarah on the show before but we like touching base from time to time to hear about the new developments with their gaming vacation destination.

The hobby section this week is about defining success for yourself. It’s cool to press yourself and want to compete against the next guy but really defining/controlling what it takes for YOU to be happy what you’re doing is a big step.

The last hour so of the show Paul talks with Johnny and Ike from Tabletop Troubadour Games. Their Hagglethorn Hollow product is EPIC. We talk about their backgrounds, the journey to the product and generally gush about how awesome it is. At the time of posting their kickstarter has 5 days left. You do not want to miss this opportunity. In addition to the campaign they are posting regular updates on their Facebook page.

FTN Episode 257 – Assault Is NOT Dead – Are You Doing It Right? Oct 12, 2018
    Show notes

FTN small squareAnother jam packed almost double sized episode. In this episode we break down three great assault units and how to use them. Midway through the show we’re joined by Mike Brandt to talk about Kill Team Command Rosters. We close out the show with a sit down with our newest sponsor to talk about Chess Clocks in tournament play.

    Yo,

On the back of the battle report JP and I filmed this past weekend I thought it would be cool to talk about a few assault units. Past just talking about the units we also talk about the best things you can take in their respective codexes to buff them up. We argue that for sub 500 points you can have an extremely disruptive element in your army.

What I mean is if you have a ‘ticking time bomb’ assault unit like Bloodletters or a fat unit of Death Company that can Wings of Fire at any moment your opponent must react to it with their deployment or fear over extending themselves in the early turns. This can allow you to scoop up a few extra ITC tournament mission points.

In the middle of the show Paul talks with Mike Brandt from the NOVA Open to talk about Kill Team Combat Roster building and how the game is ‘meant’ to be played. Its a great talk with ton of advise on how to go to the next phase of Kill Team play.

After that Paul, Chris and JP come back to discuss Khorne Berserkers. These guys took the hardest hit with Forward Operatives but they are still viable IF you can get them there. To do that you’ll need to a combination of distractions in the rest of your list and likely something like a Rhino to move them across the table. Then we jump into a segment with Jay Larsen from our sponsor below! He’s a Warmachine player and they’ve been using chess clocks for years!

Paul and Jay talk about how the clocks were adopted and the general perception of them as they become more widely used. We don’t often look to WM/Hordes for inspiration but they may have us here.

FTN Episode 256 – Is 40k Better Off After the Big FAQ2? Oct 05, 2018
    Show notes

FTN small squareThe dust is settling and people are getting ready for 40k tournaments all over the world.. Has the FAQ changed your list? Maybe not because most things are still viable but the width of viable lists is MUCH greater than it was 2 weeks ago.

    Hey guys,

Whew. The internet has been on fire talking about the changes to fly in the assault phase. It’s elicited some pretty strong reactions and has overshadowed just how much the FAQ has improved the play experience for ‘most’ players.

I say most because, outside of tournament games, you don’t see carbon copies of the same lists on tables. People are happier to play with the armies they want to instead of the armies they ‘have’ to in order to win games. It’s been a hallmark of this edition that people can play what they want.. it’s now more true than ever.

Armies will be on a more even footing – still getting to use the most punishing of Stratagems and a way to refuel their command points – just not as often. That very fact makes other armies seem more viable. The game will progress through more turns, there will be fewer turn 1-2 army wipes and players will have longer to develop their strategies. I dig it.

FTN Episode 255 – What the FAQ? Biggest Changes in the 2018 Sept 40k FAQ Sep 29, 2018
    Show notes

FTN small squareVal and Paul run down the biggest points in the Warhammer 40,000 Sept Big FAQ. We chat about the huge changes to fly and certain stratagems. Check out all the new FAQs for the game and the Codexes at the Warhammer Community site.

    Hi all,

Fly… We thought we knew what we were doing. In the Movement Phase fly is still the same. In the Charge Phase players were previously using this movement to hop over units, intervening terrain, and cover giant vertical distances. No more… You now have to consider these things during your Charge Move. This will take a little getting used to. I know I’ve enjoyed being able to leapfrog over units with the occasional Daemon Prince or Blood Angel Captain.

Overall this FAQ seems centered on game function and less tweaks to the way codexes are played outside of Dark Eldar. The Agents of Vect Stratagem has been a real barrier for opponents and now the Drukarhi players will be required to have Kabal of the Black Heart models ON THE TABLE in order for them to use this powerful Stratagem. It’s a nice change.

Knights see Command Point increases to their most powerful Stratagems as well. This is subtle but significant. Intragame command point farms have taken a hit. There is a maximum of one command point that can be regenerated per battle round. BIG CHANGE!

Reserves… and Forward Operative like deployment. Wow.. This type of deployment was new in this more aggressive edition of 40k. It seems like its been a little too aggressive and may have been contributing to a poor play experience. This FAQ brought significant changes to how these alternate deployment schemes work. We talk a bit about it on the show but more to come as we talk about army list design in future episodes.

A full list of FAQs can be found via the link above. I love that we have these balances reviews at set points in the year. While there is some anxiety and anticipation that leads up to this it stays pure to the intent – we get to take the temperature of the game and have tweaks made that in the long run benefit us all.
