    Show notes

    FTN small square

Brandon was gracious enough to sit down with me to talk about his amazing win. We talk in detail about a few of the games and I try to pick is his brain on ‘how’ he came out on top.

    Hey all,

Brandon is undoubtedly a great player and I’m happy to get the opportunity to speak with him right on the heels of him winning the largest 40k tournament in the world and as the reigning ITC Champion.

We talk about a few of his more difficult games and not just about the games themselves but how he approaches the Game entirely. We discuss winning when the chips are down and a variety of other topics.

If you are looking to up your game and maybe sharpen your 40k discipline a bit you don’t want to miss this.

We’re delighted to continue to represent Discount Games Inc as sponsor of our show. They are helping bring FTN to you. Please check them out and support the organizations that support us. FTN Episode 273 – Back to Reality – Imperial Soup is Good Feb 15, 2019
    Show notes

    FTN small square

The guys are back from the LVO mostly in one piece. The Imperials take the crown. Paul was wrong about Orks and the ‘safe’ Yannari bet didn’t work out either. We live in exciting times.

    Hey hey,

The LVO was an absolute blast. Frontline and the other organizers did a freaking amazing job. The event ran largely on time and there was no disputing the champion. You can’t take those tow things for granted at things on this scale but wowee.. We got it.

It killed me not to play in this event. I won’t be doing that again… I felt every fiber of my being calling me back to the 40k table.

Even still, I did get in a few games of 40k Kill Team Arena. The game is specifically designed for events like this to run organized play events for Arena. Very little terrain or board objectives needed. Very little space needed to set up the board. A whole lot of fun.

I highly encourage you to check it out if you’ve been on the fence about Kill Team or are looking for a fast paced competitive game with the figures you love.

In the middle of the show Paul is joined by Jay from Discount Games Inc. for a vendor spotlight segment. Jay is into a lot of stuff.. we were able chat with him about a few of those things. Please check out his store and projects.

FTN Episode 272 – Las Vegas Open – By The Numbers, What Are The Odds? Jan 31, 2019
    Show notes

    FTN small square

In this episode we look at the cold hard facts about what you will see at the Las Vegas Open. We were fortunate enough to get a peek at the factions, how often they will appear in list and some of the impressive numbers of certain model/unit choices. We crunch them and comment. We pick our favorites to win it all.

    Hey everyone,

Holy Heck… the largest 40k tournament in the world is a fantastic look at the current 40k tournament meta. The Imperium dominates the faction pie with Knights and Astra Militarum being represented the most across the 657 lists we were able to survey. The combined Aeldari forces are close to the top too.

Spread through the tables there will be a crazy amount of Grotesques and Dark Reapers. We’ll see over 400 of the brutish dark-kin models and getting close to 400 Dark Reapers. Not to be out done – we’ll see over 240 AM Company Commanders and pushing 80 AM Tank Commanders.

114 Talos.. Yep. Almost 80 Castellans… 335 Shining Spears.. Wowzer. These are numbers before the absolute final count of lists are in and I only expect these numbers to rise. Its nice to see Blood Angel Captains continue to be represented with an impressive 60 appearances.

The stats are brought to you by our friends at 40k Stats.com and Best Coast Pairings. Thank you very much for allowing us to speak about them.

In the middle of the show Paul is joined by Skari from the SkaredCast. He’s a friend of the show and we’re happy to get him on whenever he’s available. We talk about how his list is evolving with the times.

FTN Episode 271 – Are Funko Pops and Warhammer Adventures Good for 40k? Jan 26, 2019
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We spend the first part of the show talking about how we don’t mind – and also like, the idea of Warhammer not always having to be so serious and Grimdark. Its not for everyone, but it doesn’t have to be. We close out the show talking about how to get back in a game that’s going south for you.

    Hey all,

This episode is a bit of Podcast ADD but thanks a lot for coming along for the ride. We kick off the show talking about the upcoming Warhammer Adventure series and the Funko Pops. Things like this exist for almost every major property. We have kiddy or fun versions of very serious things out there like Batman, The Walking Dead, etc. These takes on otherwise very much adult and ‘for serious’ things don’t detract from our enjoyment of the mainline versions of the property. I’m not saying you should by them but the fact they exist shouldn’t bother or threaten anyone. We don’t go off on a rant or anything.. Most of just like another way to enjoy the 40k universe.

After the break we gush a bit about Titanicus. The game continues to come into it’s own and with the recent model releases you’ve got a pretty complete game with lots dynamic list possibilities. Don’t forget to check out our sponsors for some great deals on this product.

Next we talk about how to get control of a game when it’s slipping away from you. We talk about using whatever perfect information you have. You can estimate dice rolls and what your opponent might do but there are a few things you can control. You know how far you can move. You know how far your opponent can move and shoot. You know when you can get completely out of sight from your opponent.

So often I see people ‘guess’ about a few of these things. In a world when we can break out our tape measures and check – there is no reason not to. If you aren’t sure after that, or just want to double confirm, then communicating with your opponent is critical. Have that conversation with them. In ITC missions you need to be able to lock in or deny points every round. Sometimes just killing one unit will also be killing more than your opponent – a quick 2 points for you.

Val will be helping out with some of the CanCon coverage you can check out on Twitch.

FTN Episode 270 – What Will Win The LVO? Bet It All On Green Jan 17, 2019
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Val and Paul kick off the show before we jump into a great segment with Scott the Miniature Maniac. Scott is a crazy talented YouTube content creator putting out great tutorials. Later in the show we break down why the Orks will win the Las Vegas Open.

    Hey hey,

We have an almost double sized episode this week. Paul is joined by Scott from the Miniac YouTube Channel. Scott puts out fun to watch and informative content every week. I’m very happy he found time in his schedule to talk with us. His approach to the hobby is refreshing and I feel like I learn something in each of his videos.

Later in the show we focus on what we think will take gold at the Las Vegas Open. This is continuing our Road to the LVO coverage. We talk a fair amount about Orks and try to inject a little of what we think the best ways to beat them will be. Sadly.. there doesn’t seem to be an easy answer. You’ve got to force them to burn their command points inefficiently. Last year I called that Chaos would take the event and I was wrong. Am I wrong this time too?

One of the most exciting things about this game is the variance. Dice rolls aside, match-up, deployment type, terrain… the list goes on but each time I come back to Orks having a huge environmental advantage. They can control the clock, for errors in target priority, dominate in assault and shooting. Its an uphill battle for any opponent.

Finishing moves is back! Yeah.. there is a lot of hobby talk in this episode but I hope it inspires you to get some work done on your own projects. I know a lot of people are pushing to get ready for tournament season.

We talk about using basic ole Skragg Brown for old rust. Simply thinning this color down allows you to paint into the recesses of of a metallic area to instantly give you an old rusty worn effect. If you want to go super crazy.. you can mix in a little more orange to give it a brighter color. The neat thing about this method is that you can control it with the tip of your brush and don’t have to worry about going overboard with a stipple effect.

FTN Episode 269 – Is Matched Play The Ultimate Way To Play 40k? Jan 11, 2019
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We start the show with the premise that the Matched Play Format is the natural conclusion to any 40k player’s journey. It is a way for players to instantly communicate their expectations for a pickup games and not just for tournaments. What do you think?

    Hey all,

We kick off the show with a new player segment encouraging the embrace of Matched Play Rules as soon as you can. The reason is that ‘Matched Play’ rules don’t just give us a solid tournament ruleset, they also smooth out some of the edges of the game. They define and structure our expectations for the fun we can get out of our playtime.

In the middle part of the show we talk about our various tournament rituals leading up to the days before a tournament. We’re specifically referring to the Las Vegas Open but these methods apply to any tournament with any number of rounds.

This is a huge topic and during it we touch on something we’ve covered before about ritualizing your pre-game and early game rounds. We also insert the idea about always planning to go second. With the introduction of Prepared Positions is this what we should all be doing at this point?

We close out the show talking about Mud…. Let’s get dirty.

FTN Episode 268 – We All Make Deployment Mistakes Jan 04, 2019
    Show notes

    FTN small square

As good as I claim to be I still make deployment mistakes that end up costing me the game. It’s easy for us to misjudge exactly what our opponent can do and end up in a tight spot just ‘going through the motions’ until time is called. We shed some light on that stuff this episode to help you avoid the same fate I took this week.

    Hey hey,

I think episode we focus on what the Nids and Orks can do to your face… In all seriousness we discuss how quickly and reliably they can get across the field to tie up your lines or otherwise disrupt your plans.

This puts you on lock down for the rest of the game and the sad thing is that it was likely preventable. you may not have ended up winning the game but you could at least ‘play’ the game the whole time. Proper deployment on your side prevents you from having to play on the back foot hoping for successive strings of luck.

In the middle part of the show we’re joined by the ever charming AceFace. John Hickton. We talk about his major tournament happening next weekend but we also talk, and focus, on his charity raffle. This is for a great cause and a perfect way to still be a part of the event even if you can’t make it on sight. This is an opportunity to win some amazing things and have 100% of the proceeds go to the charity. Thanks for at least taking a look.

The last part of the show I’m reminded that I did NOT kick off the first show of the new year with new player tips. Please give me another chance! The second show of the year will have a newer player forucs

    Show notes

    FTN small square

2018 is just about in the books. Paul, Chris and Val run down brief FTN year in review and talk about hobby resolutions for 2019. Carl Tuttle from the ICs joins Paul for a great chat in the middle of the show. Later in the show we continue our Road the the LVO coverage.

    Hey all,

We open the show thanking all the listeners lead ourselves into a discussion about Hobby Resolutions for 2019. These are just about ‘painting more models.’ This is also about making some positive changes to get more hobby work done.

Part two has Carl Tuttle join in from the Independent Characters Podcast. It’s always a pleasure to have him on and I enjoy talking to him so much that I thought it would be fun to get him on for an extended segment. We also mention their Camp Fire Relief fund. Please check it out.

We then come back with Chris and Val for a little more hobby talk and then we dive deeper into LVO predictions. Lists will be due soon so deciding what you take is critical.

We promise to kick of the first show of the near year with some new player tips. If you were starting this game all over again what is the sort of thing you’d want to tell yourself?

FTN Episode 266 – What Will Win The Las Vegas Open? Dec 21, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Mr. Reece Robins joins the show today to talk with us about the largest Warhammer 40,000 Tournament in the world!!! We discuss the recent changes to the ITC Missions, the ITC Code of Conduct and give some tips on what you should be thinking about if you want to win a giant 40k tournament.

    Hey hey,

I had lot of fun with this episode. Mike Brandt is with giving his perspective as a player in a major 40k tournament. He was a top contender at last year’s LVO and it’s great to get his insight leading up to the event. In future episodes we’ll be covering what he’s taking and WHY he’s taking it.

Reece gives us some perspective on the event as the lead organizer and then we get down to business talking about what you need to consider if you plan on doing well. A lot of the talk is centered around how to maximize your score with ITC Champion’s Missions.

In part 2 we talk about the Code of Conduct. There are a ton of mixed feelings on this with a large portion of them being ‘Why do we even need this in the first place?!’ Each of us give our perspective on this during the segment. I’m really anxious to hear what people think of this and if they think it will actually have an impact on the 40k tournament scene.

We close the show out, likely in a bit of a reverse order… we talk about things you should consider if you are just getting in to 40k. There are many things to consider before you even buy your first model. This is the start of a series where we focus the conversation to new player needs.

We’re delighted to continue to represent Discount Games Inc as sponsor of our show. They are helping bring FTN to you. Please check them out and support the organizations that support us. Discount Games Inc. offers Games Workshop products at 15% off the suggested retail at their website here. You can send an email to the owner Jay. These guys run a podcast too! Check them out.

We also welcome Firmer Terra this week as a sponsor. I had a great time speaking with one of the founders and I thought their offering would be PERFECT for a lot of gamers out there. Right now they are offering impressive shipping promotions to buyers in the US. Please check them out.

Finishing Moves will be back next week!

FTN mostly focuses on 40k, but again you will see in the first few episodes we take a severe deep dive into nerdom. These have been a blast to record and I hope they help pass the time for you. FORGE THE NARRATIVE (iTunes Page)

FTN Episode 265 – Are Points Enough To Change The Meta? Dec 15, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Are point changes enough to make your army better? It looks like generals on every table will have a few extra points to play with so if every army gets better is anyone really better off than they were before Chapter Approved? Yes..

    Hey all,

We open up talking about the Vigilus Campaign book and the formations within. People are rightly concerned about the introduction of Formations into the game. They were a big sore spot for players in the previous edition. The designers seem to have it ‘right’ this time. You get some cool tricks and access to a new relic or ability but you have to pay for it. You aren’t forced to build lists a certain way or take ‘tax’ units either. You get to build what you want and if you want ‘more’ rules for it you’ve got to spend Command Points.

I think this an extremely successful approach to Formations. As long as the Stratagems remain appropriately costed no one has anything to worry about.

After the hobby segment we talk about several factions that maybe bubble up to the top after the Chapter Approved point changes – Death Guard, Tau, Daemons and Astra Militarum.

These guys see some point changes where it really counts. Still, winning isn’t just about the points, its how you use them.

The Finishing Moves segment is about keeping your head on straight when trying to do a lot of models at once. It’s also about creating areas of interest on large metallic components of your miniatures.
