FTN Episode 292 – Time Waits For No Man – Then The Complaining Starts Jul 26, 2019
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We’re back! Sorry for missing last week. In this episode we start of talking about timed Warhammer 40k Tournament games. Then we’re joined by Matthias Weeks from Adeption. After that we review Warcry and finish out talking Chaos Knights. It’s a double sized episode.

    Hey hey

Part one is about Chess Clocks in 40k. It’s the way of the future but when the time runs out what happens? I can tell you – the 7 stages of grief.. We need hard defined rules but we also need experience and ‘comfort’ using the clock. Superstar Jim Vesal gives us his perspective after playing all over North America.

Part two Paul sits down with Matthias Weeks from Adpeticon. The Golden Daemon is coming back to the US! This is just one of the many exciting things planned for Adpeticon 2020. Hope you enjoy the segment.

Part three is about Warcry – the hot new Age of Sigmar skirmish game releasing soon from GW. I tell you.. I’m impressed. The game has a nice flow to it with easy to get rules and fast paced turns. My buddy and I breezed through a game and had fun doing it. Can’t wait to get deeper into this.

Part four we talk Chaos Knight theory. Jim gives an unsympathetic review of how Chaos Knights fit into current army lists and what you need to take to make them as successful as they can be. Let us know what you think!

The Wrong Way Kids will be putting on their first official public event later this year the Armageddon Series: Coastal Assault. Tickets are up for sale right now. Please join us. You will have a good time. It will be a full ITC format event and an excellent opportunity to get ITC overall and faction points.

FTN Episode 291 – Here Come The Chaos Knights – Review Jul 12, 2019
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Paul and Skari from the Skaredcast team up again to talk about the Chaos Knight codex. Despite their creepy and bulky visage these things can be fast! Expect quality shooting from giant robots that zip all around the battlefield.

    Hey all

Paul and Skari make our way through the Chaos Knight Codex. It’s a thin but neat book. The Knights don’t get the variety of multiple distinct houses like their imperial cousins but they more than make up for it with the sheer usefulness of their traits, stratagems and relics.

There are a TON of good options here. You can make a knight a psyker.. you can make psyskers fear your knight. You can be super stompy… You can be super killy… Basically you build out a knight that you think best suits your list design and not be encumbered by a specific paint scheme (if you like to mix lore with your stats).

Every section of this book contains a few gems and this snuggles right up to the Chaos Soup lists out there right now.

Finishing moves is back where we talk a little bit more on Contrast paints and the practical application. Please hit me up on instagram @fightswithdice or on twitter @warmaster_tpm to see the Pink Horrors we talk about on the show.

FTN Episode 290 – Can You Handle The Hot New Custodes Tech? Jul 06, 2019
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Paul and Adam Camilleri put in a tow hander this show. We discuss Custodes tech, Daemons, and traveling with an army. New and old players of these armies may end up learning something… If not, maybe you can get some insight on what you may see out there in the field.

    Hey guys

Adam Camilleri from the Down Under Network. joins Paul for this show. We jump right into it talking about Custodes and how you can trade that high point cost for efficiency on the table. It’s really interesting just how wide open the field is for what you will actually see on the tabletop these days.

Paul is back on the Daemon train. Adam asks what he would take if the LVO was tomorrow. With contrast paints… the Daemon army fast track is a reality. I think there’s some interesting tricks you can play there after you’ve taken your obligatory 600 points of Nurgle.

This is a bit of a short show this week as we juggled holiday/vacation schedules. Everything should be back to normal next week. I’m trying to arrange an ATC team special.

In the back half of the show we talk about Function of Form with tournament terrain and which we prefer. What do you say? Would you routinely trade the ‘look’ of the terrain for function at tournaments for your average experience?

The hobby segment will be back next week for real! You won’t want to miss the dramatic return of Finishing Moves, ha!

FTN Episode 289 – Get Ready For The Tau and Chaos Meta Jun 29, 2019
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Back from the Ironman and getting set for the ATC – Paul gives a brief rundown on the games he played last weekend. In the middle of the show we’re joined by Adam Camilleri from the Down Under Network then we close out talking about the top 5 Stratagems in the game and meta shifts.

    Hey all

4-1! Not bad… I played against great opponents this past weekend and a variety of lists. I’ll definitely be back next year to this event. I had a blast and it was nice to test my ATC list a little early against an ‘all comers’ field.

I talk a little bit about the games in the first part of the show. Then I sit down with Adam Camilleri from the Down Under Network. They are really helping the scene on the other side of the world. We’ll be checking in with them again for sure.

In the last part of the show we kick the segment off talking about Meta Shifts at tournaments but then segue to talk about the top 5 Stratagems. Please let us know where went wrong.

To us, the Vect effects take the top prize followed by a controversial choice of Veterans of the Long War. Please let us know your top five on our facebook page or comment on the post.

For hobby progress.. This is the one or two week break between tournaments. I’m letting the brush rest. Ha! Back to it soon.

FTN Episode 288 – The Last Episode About Guard Lists Jun 21, 2019
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Its time for the rubber to hit the road and the Astra Militarum list Paul has been talking about will get its first test out in the wild. We’re getting ready for the ATC, and a few tournaments in the Armageddon Series. I hope you see you out there. In this show we also review Warhammer Adventures and Contrast Paints.

    Hey hey

For the Iron Man tournament coming up – 5 games in one day with social drinking – I’ve decided to go with a low mental tax list. What I mean by that is that the stratagems are fairly streamlined. There are one or two things you do consistently every round so you aren’t having to ‘figure it out’ every turn.

We’ll see if it works out. I think the list has enough tricks and a storm of lead to be competitive. With a little luck I’ll make it to the podium.

Contrast Paints. Are they magic? Magic is real and the applications of these paints is real too. While I am not having the ‘right out the pot success’ that a lot of others are seeming to have I have already worked them into my normal paint routine. Just yesterday I was able to use Black Templar to one coat a Chimera’s tank tracks. Like, seriously one brush stroke. Guilliman Flesh is amazing.

We take a moment to review Warhammer Adventures now that I’ve finished the first book. It’s good. the 40k novel was an easy read and engaged my youngest son. I highly recommend it if you were on the fence.

The hobby segment is basically about the application of the Contrast Paints. There are tons of reviews out there. The best one I’ve come across is Epic Duck Studios on youtube. Please check them out.

The Wrong Way Kids will be putting on their first official public event later this year the Armageddon Series: Coastal Assault. Tickets are up for sale right now. Please join us. You will have a good time. It will be a full ITC format event and an excellent opportunity to get ITC overall and faction points.

FTN Episode 287 – Evolve or Die! All the Top Players are Doing It Jun 13, 2019
    Show notes

    FTN small square

The title is a little tongue in cheek but the sentiment is real. Last year and early this year we saw some lists emerge as the clear tournament juggernauts. Now the field is wide open and we’ve seen a good amount of variance on the table. We’re no where close to stagnation but the tides are continuing to turn.

    Hey all

In the first part of the show we basically tee up the second part.. Superstar Jim Vesal joins us again to talk about his continued tournament success and falling just short of a couple of final tables. Honestly… that happens more than we care to think but it’s given us an opportunity to speak about retrospection in his games and how to look at situations that may have truly been avoidable through a different line of play.

Jim is wonderful to speak with and we really appreciate him coming on. It will be fun to track his lists and progress through this tournament season. He’s coming south of the border and will be playing at the ATC. It will be nice to run into him and lock horns if we’re able.

Chris and Josh jump back in for the last part of the show. We talk a little bit about getting our hands on the Contrast Paint line. Some people are doing some amazing stuff out there.

We talk a little bit about the evolution of Paul’s guard army.. so much new stuff to paint, ha. I think I’ve settled on a list and I’ll post it soon if anyone is interested.

We center this around our journeys with Orks and Astra Militarum but this sort of thing applies to all lists.

The Wrong Way Kids will be putting on their first official public event later this year the Armageddon Series: Coastal Assault. Tickets are up for sale right now. Please join us. FTN Episode 286 – Why Am I Not Winning at Warhammer 40k? Jun 08, 2019
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Val and Paul jam this episode – we examine when too much of a good thing is bad and a couple of objective ways to evaluate your performance on the tabletop. We talk about different ways to evaluate a unit’s effectiveness to YOU.

    Hey all

Last week I didn’t put the Alliance Open in the show notes. You heard us speaking with them in the show but if you haven’t checked out their site yet, please do!

I think we make talking about base size interesting in this episode. Its not just a ‘whatever’ thing. Its something you can actual consider when you’re making your army list. The ‘physics’ of the game play a huge role in the top end of 40k play. Please let us know list design changes you’ve made with this sort of thing in mind.

We ask when can you have too much of a good thing? It’s possible that you can load your army up with tons of efficient or durable units but you might be missing out on some key things that help you ‘win’ a series of games. Remember, a tournament isn’t just one battle – it’s a war! ha.

Looking at the game from a nose to tail perspective is something we can lose from time to time. Its easy to blame dice, the opponent, the terrain, etc. but there are tons of things we can control – the amount of variance we’ll accept and the stuff we actually put into our army.

We center this around our journeys with Orks and Astra Militarum but this sort of thing applies to all lists.

FTN Episode 285 – Is Netlisting in Warhammer 40k OK? May 31, 2019
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Army building is a personal journey sometimes. Sometimes you can save a lot of time borrowing list ideas from other people. We often think of netlisting as just taking point for point in a tournament winner’s list but it’s also just fine to get ideas from other people.

    Hey hey,

So sorry that we missed last week. I hope that things calm down schedule wise for everyone soon so we can get back to the normal rotation. I missed it! Josh Ginn fills in this week. He’s a panelist from a LONG time ago and now he’s back. Glad he could pinch in this week.

Netlisting is fine. There is no reason not to do it. It happens in almost every competitive environment. If you can’t get out in front of the curve you should at least embrace it if you plan to do well in competitive events.

I don’t see anything wrong borrowing the ideas of others. It even feels good to see your ideas used by other people in games like this. There is a ‘stigma’ to but that stigma basically comes from haters who want to disparage the netlister because they didn’t come up with the idea themselves. So what?

Borrowing ideas like this is a time saver. I am definitely not suggesting that borrowing ‘intellectual property’ is a good idea. That’s theft and wrong. But there is no ‘ownership’ of a good list idea. If you think it’s something that’s right for you then by all means build and play it. You’re the one who has to buy, build and paint the models.

It’s also fun to innovate. If you’re struggling to come up with something you like its very possible you need to use one of these other successful lists as a base then sub out some stuff you don’t like and then add in what you do. Careful with changing too much before you test it though..

The Wrong Way Kids will be putting on their first official public event later this year the Armageddon Series: Coastal Assault. Tickets are up for sale right now. Please join us. You will have a good time. It will be a full ITC format event and an excellent opportunity to get ITC overall and faction points.

The hobby segment is about cleaning your resin.. It may not feel like you need to but you almost always do. You can save yourself a lot of time and heartache if do this extra step on the front end.

FTN Episode 284 -Playtest Playtest Playtest – Nothing Beats It May 18, 2019
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Paul talks about a couple of his playtest games this past week. We talk about it a lot but nothing replaces playtesting. It can, in the long run, save you tons of time and money. Skari joins us to talk about it and media influencing. In the middle of the show we’re joined by one of the organizers from Battle for the Peak – a 40k tournament.

    Hey all,

I played two of the Astra Militarum variants I’ve been working on this past weekend and learned a lot. The ‘stronger’ of the builds did the worst which really took me back to the thoughts on how important it is to playtest games. You can find yourself loading up too heavily on the lower performing units or maybe you didn’t realize you were building in a weakness for yourself when you were crafting your super powerful ‘can’t be beaten list.’

That exactly what happened in at least one of the games we briefly talk about. Had I not put it on the table to see how it would work out I could have made some seriously expensive purchases out of context. We can read a powerful unit on paper but sometimes just seeing in the flow of the game is what we need.

In the middle of the show John Lennon joins us to talk about the tournament he ran a couple of weeks ago, the Battle for the Peak. This event is in Florida in the US, using ITC missions and format. It’s also the kick off event for the Armageddon Series. You can find the current Armageddon Series standings here.

In the back part of the show Skari and Paul talk about Influencers. We get asked a lot about how people can get into this game and we try to share a few thoughts.
