FTN Episode 236 – Open the Omega Vault – Codex Deathwatch Review! May 05, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Codex Deathwatch is here! We’ll see two elite style armies coming out in May and Deathwatch is the first! These guys get all the Primaris bells and whistles while adding in a few new things of their own. There are some real neat things you can do with these guys.

    Hey all,

In this episode we talk about the Louisville Slugga on June 9th and 10th and about the ATC Tournament coming up July 13-15th. Please register for these events!

We also have a hobby segment based on a white dwarf tutorial at the end of the show. Other than that this episode is all about the Deathwatch. We don’t have to go over too many ‘stat’ lines since these are all marine based profiles but we do spend quite a lot of time going over their stratagems and traits.

These guys get some great, but situational, buffs. They are able to tailor their offense to bring down what you may consider your primary targets like the opponents HQ slots or even buffs that target certain Xenos factions. Past this there is the Special Issue Ammunition. I think this is really going to give some ‘umph’ to the Primaris marines.

You start the game with a ‘mission tactic’ but there are ways to change it during the game or even double up on one. Its a versatile army but it will suffer from being an ‘elite space marine force.’ Still.. If you find yourself needing their functionality it is pretty easy to add them in to an existing imperial army.

The Hobby Segment is about a new way we discovered to do some patina in the most recently issue of White Dwarf. Please check it out.

FTN Episode 235 – Did the FAQ Change Your List and Special Segment with CMON! Apr 27, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We talk a bit about mission design and how the overall state of hobby in your area could effect your tournament scene. The episode ended up a little longer than we expected – sorry for the ramble… about an hour in we are joined by Michael Shinall from CMON to talk about their new Song of Ice and Fire miniature game.

    Hey hey,

In this episode we talk about the Louisville Slugga on June 9th and 10th and about the ATC Tournament coming up July 13-15th. Please register for these events!

We don’t crack post FAQ meta wide open or anything but we do talk about how the nature of the game is getting much more well defined and how this SHOULD effect mission design. For instance, if you don’t want Gunline armies to rule the roost then you have to incentivize people to take more interactive lists through creative, but fair, missions.

This ended up being a bit of a wandering talk about mission, tournaments and the hobby scene. I slip in there somewhere to say that Val Heffelfinger beat me in our grudge/trash-talk match.

In the last segment I am joined by Michael Shinall from Cool Mini or Not to talk about their upcoming miniature wargame based on the Song of Ice and Fire books. It’s a rank and file based fantasy battle game where units come pre-assembled where you can take them out of the box and pretty much put them right on the table.

The Hobby Segment will be back next week!

FTN Episode 234 – The BIG FAQ and Revenge of the Beta Rules Apr 19, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

The long awaited FAQ is here and its glorious. The very core of matched play has been changed and I think it’s changed for the better. The rule of 3 is a breath of fresh air. Its one of the cool ways the designers are willing to help balance tournament play.

    Hey guys,

We’re back! And what a time to be back with this epic FAQ drop. Points have changed, army list design has change the CORE rules of the game have potentially changed with a Beta rule or two.

There is a lot of hype around the Beta rule right now. Are we obliged to play with them and give feedback? I’m not sure. The deepstrike rule is one that I am most conflicted about.

I feel like this is just too heavy handed against assault based armies. I get it… people put up screens of cheap troops and it is difficult to get the first turn mega charge off anyway but this change makes it 100% all the time that shooting armies will get to do what they do best, every single game!

The Finishing Moves segment is sponsored by Frontline Gaming. Their new mats are now hot off the presses and getting ready to be shipped. Please check them out, even if you already have a game mat. Their new styles are very impressive.

The Finishing Moves segment is about speed painting and making sure you do the ‘pre-work’ you need to in order to make the most of your painting time. 1000 points of Necrons in two days!

FTN Episode 233 – Codex Drukhari Review – The Agents of Vect Apr 02, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We get right down to business talking about Codex Drukhari with Troop and Ricky. We spend a lot of time speaking about Wytches because they pack QUITE a punch. There will be tons of different ways to play this army and the codex rewards you for taking lots of small detachments.

    Hey all,

Codex Drukhari brings us the best Stratagem we’ve seen to date. Agents of Vect. This allows you to nullify an opponents Stratagem. This may seem ‘ok’ but it is bonkers powerful. I would expect a lot of people to take a small amount of Drukhari just for this ability. Its a specific Kabal of the Black Heart Stratagem.

We spend a LOT of time on this show talking about Wtyches. They hit like a truck and can actually make it into combat. You can choose to put them in transports or just run them across.

There are so many ways to play this army with the Kabalite, Wytch Cults or the Covens. Each of these variants are very viable.

The Finishing Moves segment is sponsored by Frontline Gaming. Their new mats are now hot off the presses and getting ready to be shipped. Please check them out, even if you already have a game mat. Their new styles are very impressive.

FTN Episode 232 – Necron Codex Review Part 1 and Adepticon Recap Mar 30, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We are very late with this show and I deeply apologize. We kick the show off talking about some of the major changes in the Necron units. This book is chock full of very appealing units. It will be difficult to settle on the ‘perfect’ list. That’s a good thing.

    Hey guys,

We start the show talking about the Necron Deceiver. This guy is able to re-deploy himself and d3 units before the first turn begins. The d3 element is a little random but still something you can plan for as you’re looking to throw big units of warriors right in the face of your opponent. Units get the ability to be re-deployed 12inches or more away from enemy units.

You can’t charge if you use this ability but I don’t think you want to. You want to blast away after using several of the Necron character buffs and really strike a big blow on your opponent out of ‘nowhere.’ This is a powerful ability and the Deceiver is priced very competitively points wise for what he brings to the table. There is nothing preventing you from setting up for figures WAY fat away from the enemy either.

Another huge change in the book is that Wraiths now do two damage with their attacks AND they can fallback from combat and still shoot and/or charge. This will allow them to scoot over and behind screens with their wraithform ability. HOLY MOLY!

The Finishing Moves segment is sponsored by Frontline Gaming. Their new mats are now hot off the presses and getting ready to be shipped. Please check them out, even if you already have a game mat. Their new styles are very impressive.

The hobby segment will return next week and we have barely scratched the surface of the Necron dex. I am not kidding when I say this army deep with choices and multiple top build options.

FTN Episode 231 – Tau Codex Review part 2 – Revenge of the Stormsurge Mar 15, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We get much deeper into the Tau Codex this week and are joined by our special guest Tau expert. Strangely we come to the conclusion that you may want to put your Stormsurge or Forge World Tau front and center in your army.

    Hey all,

Part two is here! We talk about how the tau codex comes together as a whole.

I apologize for the short write up here as I get ready for Adepticon and some work travel.

In the first and last part of the show we chit chat a bit about hobby work and what we say from GW’s GAMA presenation.

The Finishing Moves segment is sponsored by Frontline Gaming. Their new mats are now hot off the presses and getting ready to be shipped. Please check them out, even if you already have a game mat. Their new styles are very impressive.

Finishing moves is all about painting Spirits. We talk about the tried and true Oxide approach but also work in a few new tricks.

FTN Episode 230 – Tau Codex Review Part 1 – More coming soon!! Mar 10, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We were not able to record on schedule this week – things happen! So we had to cut our codex coverage a little short. We will have more stuff on the way soon with some special guests! Until then.. ENJOY THE RIPTIDES!

    Hey all,

As mentioned, I’m releasing this very quickly and we didn’t have time to get deep into the full coverage. More to come!

The Riptides and Broadsides get a LOT cheaper. We do our best to run down the base rules of these guys.

Part 2 of the show is something we recorded in the early part of the week before we had the dex in hand.

The Finishing Moves segment is sponsored by Frontline Gaming. Their new mats are now hot off the presses and getting ready to be shipped. Please check them out, even if you already have a game mat. Their new styles are very impressive.

We talk a LOT of hobby this week in part two of the show.

FTN Episode 229 – Are Chess Clocks the Answer? Mar 01, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We kick off the episode talking about Black Templars and how to be Eldar and Daemons. It is kind of weird to think that the Black Templars may be the best anti psyker units in the game! Then Paul is joined by Reece Robins from Frontline Gaming to talk about tournament structures and chess clocks.

    Hey guys,

We get a lot of questions from people wanting to squeeze some extra value out of their army choices. This one came from someone asking about Black Templars and that got me thinking… They have that sweet 4+ deny the witch power that we all thought was lame before. Not anymore!

In the middle, and longest part, of the show Paul and Reece sit down to talk about some of their upcoming events and tournament structures across the board may be changing. Not just to ‘weed out the bad guys’ but maybe so it makes the whole thing more fun to watch on tv.. Yep..

The last part of the show I rant a bit about not getting points for being fully painted when my army is not only fully painted.. but painted well! Ha. It’s light hearted but the message is the same. If you publish criteria as a TO, please stick to it. Its important at every level of the game.

The Finishing Moves segment is sponsored by Frontline Gaming. Their new mats are now hot off the presses and getting ready to be shipped. Please check them out, even if you already have a game mat. Their new styles are very impressive.

The finishing moves is quick this week. We talk very briefly about how to store you texture paints and dry paints.

FTN Episode 228 – Tournament Prep – Shapeways and Adepticon Interviews Feb 22, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

This episode leads off with a little hobby talk and then we move into two special segments – one with a Shapeways community manager and one with Matthias Weeks from Adpeticon.

    Hey all,

Val joins us again as we ramble on… We cover a little WiP hobby stuff at the start of the show and talk about how to use a heat gun to reshape resin models. It is not as scary as you think and you can do it on the cheap. If you’re working with these models a lot you may want to invest in one. The last part of the show we talk about a pretty brutal and meta influencing Tyranid list.

The first interview segment we are joined by Andrew Thomas from Shapeways. He’s been on the show before but in this segment we talk about the first steps of HOW to get your idea from your head to the 3d printer.

In the second segment we’re joined by Matthias Weeks, one of the organizers of Adpeticon. Matthias is a great guy and a gamer to the core. It was an absolutely joy to speak to him about what is in store for the thousands of people that will attend Adepticon this year.

The Finishing Moves segment is sponsored by Frontline Gaming. Their new mats are now hot off the presses and getting ready to be shipped. Please check them out, even if you already have a game mat. Their new styles are very impressive.

A full on finishing moves segment will be back next week!

FTN Episode 227 – Culture Crafting 40k Tournaments, Shadespire and Necromunda Previews Feb 16, 2018
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We explore more culture crafting topics on the episode this week and state that Organizers are more empowered than ever to try new things at their events. Enthusiasm for matched play is at an all time high people WANT to come to events.. Let’s make it the best we can.

    Hey all,

We are joined by tournament ace Val Heffelfinger on this show to talk about hobby participation and sportsmanship at events. He’s got a lot of good insight on the topic and has been part of a lot of great discussions on this topic online.

In the middle of the show Paul sits down with Sean Nayden. Sean is the captain of the US ETC team and an all around good guy. I hope you enjoy his approach to the hobby.

After that we get into the new Shadespire and Necromunda releases. It is a great time to be a part of this hobby. In the not so distant past these games would have appeared marginalized by GW. NOT ANYMORE!! These are fully supported awesome games and you should check them out.

The Finishing Moves segment is sponsored by Frontline Gaming. Their new mats are now hot off the presses and getting ready to be shipped. Please check them out, even if you already have a game mat. Their new styles are very impressive.

Paul goes on and on about Athonian Camonshade. This product is right up there with Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade. Its a versatile product that yields predictable results. What more could you want?
