Feeling Things with Amy & Kat

Feeling Things with Amy & Kat is a podcast for anyone who’s ever had feelings—or wants to. Hosted by Amy Brown and therapist Kat Van Buren, this is a space where nothing is off-limits. From deep reflections on childhood to pop culture obsessions to what’s happening in the world, all feelings deserve a seat at the table—big, small, awkward, joyful, confusing, and everything in between. At its core, it’s real friends having real conversations about real feelings. Some episodes go deep, some stay light, but all are rooted in curiosity, honesty, and connection. In a world that moves fast, sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is pause… and feel things.

Eating Disorders & Feelings of Shame Apr 02, 2022
    Show notes

If you struggle with feelings of shame around your eating disorder, you are not alone and that's the point that Amy drives home in this episode! She started off by sharing an encouraging email from a listener named Sarah (who kindly reminded us that we have the power to tune out "disordered talk" so that we don't end up engaging in toxic behaviors that we're exposed to). Amy also shared a blog post from one of our favorite eating disorder therapists, Jennifer Rollin, that gives a handful of compassionate responses to eating disorder thoughts that we might be having. Amy had a lot of shame around her binge/purge behaviors for many years, but now she knows that the more we speak up about eating disorders, the more we can start to eliminate the shame and stigma. Amy wrapped things up by suggesting Episode 95 of the Brain Over Binge Podcast (Creating Motivation to Stop Binge Eating) if you're frustrated that you haven't been able to fully stop binge eating (a place that Amy was in for several months when she first started her recovery journey!)

4 Things With @Mosheh: Want An Easy Way to Stay In the Know Without Watching the News or Getting On Socials? Amy Has 4 Reasons Why You Need Mosheh’s Newsletter In Your Life!! Mar 31, 2022
    Show notes

Amy's favorite way to get news is through Mosheh Oinounou {@Mosheh} so she is very excited that he now has an email newsletter called: Mo News Newsletter!!! It arrives in her inbox a few times a week to help her "stay in the know" with what is going on in the world. Amy shared her favorite 4 things about Mo News Newsletter: 1. He is the best person to follow on Instagram for news...but getting the news in email form helps for the days that Amy is trying to take a break from Instagram/social media. 2. Mosheh has always given us the news in a digestible way & his newsletter is no different! 3. He mixes in pop culture...which is a nice break from the heavier stuff! 4. His Friday newsletters include: what he's watching, reading & eating. Amy has found good shows to watch, articles to read, and snacks to buy at the grocery store because of this fun little addition to the newsletter! They wrapped up this conversation with gratitude & Mosheh shared 4 things he is currently thankful for!

Inviting Childlike Play Into Your Life. It’s Cool To Enjoy Living (Stop Saying “Act Your Age”). Eggrolls, Cake & Cat Food. Concrete Conversation Cards (Random Questions That Lead to Conversations That Matter). (5th Thing) Mar 29, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to the '5th Thing' with Amy & Kat!! Today’s quote is from Mark Twain: “Most men die at 27, we just bury them at 72.” This led to a conversation about spontaneously being a kid & being told to “act your age” (Kat shared a post that she put up about this and it hit the spot!) Amy then read a nice email from a listener named Blakely that had a request for when Amy interviews Shauna Niequist (Amy shared that she will be granting this listener her wish!!). Other things that came up this episode: $17 egg rolls, a super crazy birthday cake (that Amy doesn’t want to make, but she might have to if she wants to make her daughter happy for her bday), the time Amy’s sister made her act like a cat (and eat cat food), Amy’s sister’s HGTV show premieres Sunday, April 10th, & some fun ‘Concrete Conversation’ card questions!!

It’s Time To Do Eating Disorder Recovery Differently with Kristie Amadio Mar 26, 2022
    Show notes

Certified eating disorder coach Kristie Amadio is our guest today. After 14 years of battling her eating disorder and seeking treatment in both Australia and New Zealand—where she was told she was ‘chronic’ and should expect to struggle with food and body image issues for the rest of her life—Kristie flew to America for intensive treatment and made a full recovery. Kristie was stunned by the gap and unequal access to support and resources both here and overseas, so she resolved to make cost effective support available to everyone, no matter where they lived. By working online and living with people in recovery all around the world, Kristie Amadio is adding a new dimension to the platform used to treat eating disorders.

“All you need is to have the curiosity of what it would be like to not have an eating disorder in order to start your journey to recovery.” - Kristie Amadio

March Affirmations. Numbers. Face Shaving. Protecting Passwords. You’re Not Lazy & Being Busy/Exhausted Doesn’t = Your Worth. Single People & Boundaries. (5th Thing) Mar 22, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to the '5th Thing' with Amy & Kat!! Amy’s friend sent her a list of ‘March Affirmations’ and the one for 3/22 (today) is “Even here, I am growing!” Amy also wanted to share a few more: “I will bloom how I was meant to” (3/17) and “I am free to dream a new dream” (3/18). This led to a conversation about numbers and Amy referred to a note she got from her “psychic cousin” about the episode they recorded together last week fittingly being numbered episode #340. Amy share’s some of her skincare routine (per an email) and that leads to the girls talking about shaving their faces! Another listener emailed in asking Amy to share the name of the app she uses to store all of her passwords (a very helpful tool!). Amy & Kat then wanted to make sure everyone listening knows that being busy/exhausted doesn’t = your worth. You don’t have to chase that type of life & that doesn’t make you lazy!!!!!!! Kat then shared something that Shauna Niequist told her that was really powerful for her to hear about being a single person & setting boundaries!

Is Recovery Ever Going To Be Worth It? Hijacked Foods. If You’re Looking For Fear You’ll Find It. Letting Go of an Eating Disorder. Mar 19, 2022
    Show notes

This episode is all about recovery and hope! Being in recovery is not easy and some may wonder “is recovery ever going to be worth it?” Amy is just starting to feel the shift after 2 years of recovery…so she opened up to Kat DeFatta (today’s guest) about the “hijacked foods” that she now feels okay bringing back into her life (i.e. green juice, lemon water, kale, etc…). Letting go of an eating disorder is never easy…but it’s possible…it takes time and hard work…but it is possible…and recovery (spoiler alert) is worth it.

Thank you licensed therapist, Kat Defatta, for joining us with her wisdom. You can find her on Instagram: @Kat.Defatta + @YouNeedTherapyPodcast.
