Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

A bonus Friday episode for you this week, by of a feed drop for the podcast BORN HUMAN!

It’s a rare thing, these feed drops (where a podcast features or ‘guests’ on a particular podcast feed), but this one struck a chord with Pip. Andy Chambers, the host of Born Human has been on the Distraction Pieces Podcast before back on episode 412 if you would like a full chat with the man himself, but here is literally a whole episode of Born Human, presented “as is” with no DPP editing/mixing.

It’s part 1 of a 2 part podcast, so catch the follow up on the Born Human podcast but know going in that this one features our good friend Chris Glassen (Hardcore Listing / Drunkast etc), and the subject is all about becoming a parent to your own parents in advancing years. All shall be explained and expanded upon but it’s a deep one, and if you’re experiencing a similar situation, this could be a very useful resource and suport, and certainly a voice that can gently let you know you’re not alone in this. Check the links below for more on Born Human and Andy.

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by podcasting heavyweight, author and comic DAN SCHREIBER!

Surely you will be familiar with the podcast No Such Thing As A Fish by now - either as a hardcore listener or from seeing it time and time again on top podcast lists. It’s the show you know Dan Schreiber from, being part of the greater QI stables and leading from Dan’s own ‘elf’ status on QI. Here’s a great chance to hear Dan’s origin story, geographically and career-wise, and good lord it’s a fascinating one. From Hong Kong to Australia to the UK, weaving in all sorts of awesome entertainment job nuggets all the way as well as brewing an interesting race identity within himself, making friends with some greats along the path and ultimately finding himself in a wonderful spot in the media landscape. Oh and his parents were celebrity hairdressers in Hong Kong as well. Too much to synopsise here of course so just listen to the episode, it’s a genuine goodie.

Rob Williams • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #431 Jan 21, 2022

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

A bonus treat this Friday as Pip is joined by writer of Channel 4’s new prison drama ‘Screw’, ROB WILLIAMS!

Rob of course has worked on a great amount of productions and works, but the focus this episode is the series Screw, and how it all formulated including the development and so on. The synopsis for Screw reads: “This is prison as never seen before – the uncensored, shocking and often darkly funny reality of life as a prison officer in an all-male prison in 21st century Britain” - and if that triggers your interests then this will be a perfect episode as Pip and writer Rob get deep into the mechanics and background of it all. A wide ranging chat which covers dystopian overload, teaching in prison, the lack of prison officer based shows, representation, being defined by the worst moment of your life, long running shows and the UK television framework, writing as part of a well oiled machine, writing to hooks and holding attention, Eastenders, Casualty, and loads more which will appeal to basically anyone with an interest in broadcast media. ENJOY!

Emma Dabiri • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #430 Jan 19, 2022

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by inspirational author and activist EMMA DABIRI!

Recorded at a time of political weirdness (a backdrop as old as time), illicit government parties feel pretty low down the list compared with the content of what Emma gets into with this episode. Just listen to her break down the origins of slavery in the early part, where she traces race as a construct to the roots, and charts its spread from there on. Emma’s expert delivery does not end there, for that is merely the tip of the iceberg of what is a very useful, inspiring and absolutely information-packed episode, where she also goes into her book and the inspirations behind the title, her upbringing in Ireland and Atlanta with Nigerian and Irish parents, being subliminally introduced into black politics from a very early age, and again, tracing certain elements of slavery and racism to the origins in order to better understand the impact and resonance. I mean, just listen, and read the book. And share this episode too - it’s a great one.

Evanna Lynch • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #429 Jan 12, 2022

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by actor, author and activist EVANNA LYNCH!

You may know Evanna from her role as Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter films, which is a fine place to begin. But of course Evanna is a whole universe more than an acting role, a glimpse of which you shall have here on this podcast. She catches up with Pip about essentially life after Harry Potter, which contains a huge amount of ups, but as we all know, also contains a fair share of downs. Evanna spent a period of her life dealing with an eating disorder and the many issues which that brings with it, and only through a huge amount of work has she now been able to find ways of living with it and thinking of it in a multitude of different ways. She’s gained a demonstrable clarity over what was happening, and this podcast proves what power one can gain over something that attempts to gain its own foothold. She also goes into her own activism and vegan lifestyle too. Evanna’s book ‘The Opposite Of Butterfly Hunting’ is available now from all good bookstores.

* trigger warning - eating disorders and the knock on effects are discussed in this episode, so please take note if that's something that you're not in a place for right now.

Films Of The Year: 2021 • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #427 Jan 05, 2022

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

The very merriest, happiest and healthiest of new years to you all and all the very best for what's to come in 2022. Let's make it one for the books... Not that any year in previous history has not been one for the books - but still, let's do what we can. All this talk of books though is not helping the cause of todays episode - for this is the tradition as old as time itself, where your dutiful cinephile host Scroobius Pip takes you on a walk in the woods to break down his films of the year list for the past 12 months!

As always, and I know you know this by now, but it bears repeating - this is PIPS LIST! If any films are mentioned that did not make your own personal list, or if your list contains films that aren't on Pips list, all is well. No need to grumble. This is a celebration of film which you are welcome to - not a film dis-fest or argument over what is or isn't worthy. All positive energy, all good and healthy input. Let's kick off the year on a plus and not get caught up in all that. Right? Amazing. And with that - let's get stuck in. Folks, enjoy the annual films of the year list from Pip!

End Of Year Drunkast 2021 • Part 5 Dec 29, 2021

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

Looking at my Casio, it’s about that time… Folks… It’s DRUNKAST TIME! PART 5!

You are - like it or not - VERY cordially invited to front row seats for the ongoing festive season roll through the wicked and weird wonderland of the three merry men, the three kings, the three drunkateers (not bad uh?) as they present for you the listening public, the family tradition that is the Drunkast. Drinks get drunk, gifts get gifted, and the world gets put to rights - that is to say, they get together and have a fun old time in front of us all. You might have heard these before in which case, god bless you. But if not - just be warned that it is not the usual Distraction Pieces fare here. It’s a bit rough in spots if you’re in front of the kiddos or the parents, and it does get loud. So depending on your environment, MAYBE one for the headphones. You’ll get the idea from the first few moments.

That being said - if you’re all strapped in and ready - let this be your warning. You’re in Drunkast town now. The sheriff’s asleep. The sun’s going down. Let’s go to work.
