Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by brilliant actor, writer and author KATY WIX!

A really engaging and honest check in about so much on the whole, but with a ton which will certainly appeal to the writers out there on account of the really useful process and practice thoughts. Of course it’s not all about that, but it’s very cool to get an insight into what went into Katy’s book ‘Delicacy - A Memoir About Cake & Death’. Among other ace tangents, Katy and Pip cover awkward coughing, finding beauty in the details, giving self-permission to focus on the personal details, death and grief, cathartis and therapy through writing, time management and fitting much into not much, magical Cardiff beginnings and acting alongside Steve Coogan in full Alan Partridge mode, and on Stath Lets Flats! Refreshing and inspiring. Enjoy!

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by acting treasure DANIEL MAYS!

A seemingly long overdue catchup in session right here, as Pip and Daniel talk shop and chop it up like old acting mates in a delightful and wide ranging episode. Daniel’s been busy for years, and chances are you will be familiar with him from more than Line Of Duty, but if not - as ever, the Distraction Pieces Podcast will steer you right on your path to familiarity, as Daniel breaks it down about film sets during covid times, unions and the crucial world behind the camera, DPP spiritual father Stephen Graham (aka - in this case - Cilla Black), process and nuances in acting, his filmography and television spots including Temple, Red Riding, Shifty, Line Of Duty of course and all that’s ahead. Lovely stuff! Enjoy.

Edgar Wright • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #416 Oct 26, 2021

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by director and screenwriter EDGAR WRIGHT!

For sure one of the more long awaited ones right here, as Pip finally checks in with Edgar in person. Edgar’s on top form as he goes into depth on his latest movie, and depth that will please all film enthusiasts at that. No spoilers given so don’t worry if you haven’t seen it yet, but it all sounds incredible. You’ll hear about production being shut down on arrival of the pandemic, the distopian Soho landscape which played into his film set in Soho (which boasts on location filming other than the parts referenced by Edgar here), authenticity, on camera effects and capturing magic, dealing with the present as well as going back in time, danger of romanticising the past, not turning his back on the UK, the cast and of course the Sparks documentary which is introducing and re-introducing a whole new and existing audience to the band. Excellent stuff, get involved!

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the UK’s most notorious music making two man crew, SLEAFORD MODS!

A great opportunity to catch them both in one place (albeit remotely), as Jason and Andrew check in with Pip about everything from then to now… Of course this includes matters pandemical, and how it affected the two musically and mentally, fitness regimes and incidental social Curb Your Enthusiasm-like moments, social media and the many varied pitfalls of it, politics and the UK’s island mentality, punk, noise, influences, anunciation and the whole rest of it… Naturally that means scratching the surface but it’s a joy to get even this far with the two. Brilliant stuff, you’ll enjoy!

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by all star comedian, host, writer and more JIMMY CARR!

You for sure know Jimmy, for Jimmy is ubiquitous and with good reason - he’s a very funny comedian and always comes through on a panel show. He has a new book out too called Before & Laughter, which is very much a ‘get to know’ kind of book so well worth peeping. He and Pip cover a ton of ground on here too, from the difference pace of feedback loops in comedy and book writing, the trojan horse of standup in panel shows, joke analytics, the legacy of the incredible Sean Lock (RIP), life choices, comedy workouts, comparison as the thief of joy, his well publicised money issues, being a father and all kinds of life in between. Honest, interesting and very funny - enjoy.

Andy Chambers (Born Human) • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #412 Oct 07, 2021

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by long term friend and founder of mental health consultancy Born Human, ANDY CHAMBERS!

A lovely bonus edition of the podcast here as Pip and Andy kick off plotting the lineage of their friendship before our ears, which is a lovely thing to behold and even something we can do with our own friends perhaps. In learning more about Andy, we also learn more about his organisation Born Human, which revolves around mental health in a very focused way. What’s cool about this episode is that we hear what the organisation’s ‘personality’ is through hearing from Andy, which is the perfect way to do it. Everything from rituals, loss and grief, family, birth, the minds of kids, safe spaces, post natal depression in mothers and fathers, the benefit of the walk and talk, preventative care and the Born Human podcast. A balm for your mind, which will soothe and replenish. No it’s not about skincare. Enjoy!

Jack Thorne • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #411 Oct 05, 2021

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the prolific and inspirational screenwriter JACK THORNE!

An exciting one for us all, not least for Pip, as we hear the two check in on all matters of the small and big screen from a unique point of view. Jack has been a part of such a lot of incredible productions, and this will be a delight not only for those who know exactly who he is, but those who are unfamiliar - the themes and topics are universal in creativity and process. From ill children, to season 2 being the best season, DPP pod godfather Stephen Graham, writing in shades of grey and occasionally black and white, fiction informed by real life, the Shane Meadows sandbox, intricacies of roles, ratings, social realism and a selection of his works from Skins, to Shameless, to Help, to This Is England, it’s a packed and awesome one.
