Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the tremendous actor SAM SPRUELL!

A very open chat with Pip and Sam, who actually joined forces once upon a time in one of Pip’s earlier acting adventures. They catch up on that of course, but all the way through this is peppered with all sorts of wisdom and experience which touches on so many facets of acting and life in general (while being grounded in Sam’s current project The North Water) - the importance of breaks and holidays, funny-bad reviews, attitude on set, getting notes on your character, working with director Andrew Haigh, class structures in historical drama, cut-off locations, staying in your lane as a character, Steve McQueen and the Small Axe series, and too much more to synopsise here. Just dive in - you’ll get a lot from it.

Lowkey • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #407 Sep 07, 2021

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by long awaited / much requested rapper and activist LOWKEY!

While rapper and activist might not cover it completely, Lowkey is someone who you need on your radar as this podcast will prove. It feels like Pip has been in training for this one but it is not a tricky listen - more like one that will continue to reward you on repeat listens. From the start I would suggest keeping a pad and pen by you just in case you want to make some notes, but otherwise it’s a perfect chance to let some pure facts and figures wash over you. From remittances, immigration, tax havens, etymology and what could be taught in schools, patriotism, circular logic, kung fu, houses of cards, the Grenfell tragedy, Operation Legacy and too much more to list. As I say - get a pen and pad ready, and prepare to take on fuel for a thousand conversations to come.

BONUS TIMES as Pip re-presents for you a classic Distraction Pieces Network podcast SAY WHY TO DRUGS with SUZI GAGE!

All is explained in the intro but below is the original writeup for the episode. Find the podcast feed in all good pod spots but links will be posted below too. ENJOY!

"Dr Suzi Gage and Scroobius Pip discuss booze on this episode, the drug of choice in the UK and elsewhere. Although its legal, and often barely considered as a drug, it's by no means a safe substance."

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the actorial force of nature NATHANIEL MARTELLO-WHITE!

Yet another masterclass in the acting world, following a series of incredible one-on-ones with legends on the screens of all sizes… This time Nathaniel steps up to the microphone to talk all things stage and screen, including the feeling of not stopping through the pandemic, as well as thoughts on that subject itself, race and culture, growing up, the art of acting itself, near scrapes with footballing, Steve McQueen, art and his many varied projects past present and future. Inspiring all the way, enjoy!

Niamh Algar • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #404 Aug 24, 2021

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the absolutely brilliant actor NIAMH ALGAR!

Niamh and Pip get straight into the whole actorial science pretty swiftly right here, from her place in the early stages of quarantine. What this all leads to is an incredibly useful toolbox for actors with gems from all sides of the camera including how to dismount emotionally after heavier scenes, the strangeness of being praised for reaching emotional places, on set therapy and the importance of decompression through the process (and how the days of distressing your cast as director are hopefully behind us), manipulation, Deceit, Raised By Wolves, Calm With Horses, Ridley Scott, Prano Bailey Bond, defending your character, process and craft, collaboration and just so much more. You’ll really enjoy this one whether you’re involved in acting or not… Have fun!

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by People Just Do Nothing star STEVE STAMP!

Of course the term ‘star’ doesn’t cover all the bases of what Steve does over there at the Kurupt FM towers… From writing to directing to all kinds of other bits and bobs, he is in a perfect position to chat with Pip about the makings of the People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan film, the timing of it in a mid-post-pandemic world, the writing process, characters, development and all that comes with it. Of course the two branch out into other topics but that’s a fine roundup of what you can expect. Have fun, and make sure you catch the film too!

Shawn Levy • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #402 Aug 15, 2021

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

An amazing opportunity to get inside the mind of writer, director and producer SHAWN LEVY!

You may be familiar with Shawn from such projects as the sleeper hit ‘Real Steel’, the ‘Night At The Museum’ series and ‘Stranger Things’ to name a mere sprinkling in the vast ocean of goodies he’s been involved in - a brief glimpse at his IMDB will open the door on these so definitely have a peep - but this is a great full length chat with Pip, as the two go in on things in some nice detail. What’s really cool is how Shawn becomes a fast convert to the DPP faith around 20 minutes in when it’s clear that, dear listeners, our own Pip knows exactly what he’s doing behind the steering wheel. Hear about the amazing ‘Free Guy’, casting, creation, self taping and in person auditions, letting ideas flow in the edit stage, and so much more including some choice horse analogies. Please enjoy!

Tim Renkow • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #401 Aug 10, 2021

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

A fabulous episode as Pip is joined by the very funny and very lovely comic and actor TIM RENKOW!

A class act from beginning to end, as Tim catches us up on all things actorial, comedic and other such goodness including his show Jerk, being an American in the UK (by way of Mexico, North Carolina and Memphis), hippy parents, rough days on set, accessibility in comedy clubs, cold curry, exhaustion, and awesome rap including MF Doom and our very own Pip! Tim’s also very honest about his own work ethic, which is almost a ‘make hay while the sun shines’ attitude, combined with a hard work drive that’s more about keeping it GOOD rather than predictable. Proper inspiring, and you shall for sure be checking out his work in the acting and standup worlds after this if you haven’t already.

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

Party people in the place, please be welcomed once more (making that four welcomes if yr counting) to EPISODE 400! The big birthday bash episode!

Two birthdays in fact - if you consider an episode as having a birthday, which of course means the podcast had to go through the being born process and who knows how that works in this scenario - but regardless, this is episode 400 as well as being Uncle Pip’s 40th birthday celebration! Things kick off from episode 1, which lands directly on Pip’s big day, and the celebrations from there shall be echoes of the party but no less awesome and entertaining. So come for the birthday goings on, stay for the cake and stick around as long as its deemed polite to at a birthday party! Let’s all be happy birthday wishing and uproarious in our celebrations. You know, in safe ways. Headphones are probably the utmost in safety so you’re already ahead of the game, folks. Please enjoy! OH - importantly too - Pip is joined by Chris and Stu of Hardcore Listing and many more tremendous podcasts in the greater podcasting universe!
