Due to one thing or another, schedules have been flipped, turned upside down, but Pip and Amanda have managed to crowbar in some good time to get together and rock a truly fine podcast for you all. Amanda’s been in a LOT of good things over the past, namely Man Stroke Woman, Safe, Sherlock, and much more - in this hour, she and Pip go into a ton including her Hertfordshire early days, nature and how it particularly played into the past year, growing up in happy and not so happy times, her fearless mum, Underdogs and their work with kids and dogs (and the importance of rescue dogs), casting and agents, television vs film, her road to where she is now and all kinds of easter eggs within. Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 311 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by activist, author and actor (all the A’s), Michael Cashman! Sorry - let me correct that - Baron Cashman CBE!

An amazing meeting this week with Pip and Michael, a man whose experience and knowledge will come shining through immediately upon listening. As a founder of Stonewall (with Ian McKellen), ex-member of European Parliament, activist and former actor (those of us who grew up on Eastenders will remember him as Colin), his life has been a genuine document of ups and downs, highs and lows, but all navigated with love, conviction and positivity. His story is moving, uplifting and at times incredibly unfair, but as you will hear - from all of this, pure goodness has been his reward. Over 30 years of his journey has been underpinned by long term partner Paul, who is unfortunately no longer with us but as you’ll hear, is spoken of by Michael with such love and compassion and it’s pretty much impossible to not be stirred by - well, the whole conversation, let’s be frank. Joining the podcast this week is the fabulous acting favourite and true treasure JULIET STEVENSON!

Having met on set on Sara Pascoe’s ‘Out Of Her Mind’, Juliet and Pip hit it off and set up a future plan for a podcast meeting - and here we have the glorious result! Kicking off with some misty eyed recollections of the excellent show, much ground is covered from there on including the wide world of Edinburgh Fringe, ‘The Doctor’ and the issues it raises, acting as societal study, Alan Rickman and her acting peers, the intricacies of cancel culture and why it is so tricky, reaching facts first without the journey, her work with charities and how she became familiar and knowledgable with the plight of refugees (and indeed her path to that world), the ironies of British history, a few early moments in Essex, being a conduit as an actor, Shakespeare, Beckett, and remodelling older texts. But that’s scratching the surface - it’s a deep one, enjoy!

Pip catches up on events from the past few years with poet, author and good pal LAURA DOCKRILL!

A very timely meeting with Laura this week, coming in after the finale of the Where’s Your Head At series that spanned the month of May. This is very much on message for the series, though this time we get to spend a whole episode with Laura, who was last featured a good few years ago on here. As you could imagine, a LOT of life has happened in those interviening years, but as you will hear in truly honest detail, it has been a mix of ecstatic highs and powerful lows, a rocky road upon which which she has felt every single bump. So just as a note up top, Laura goes into her experiences with pregnancy, though focused more on the later stages post-delivery. And that’s where things got tough to say the very least. This is an incredible frank conversation which goes into post partum psychosis, and all that entails - but it’s incredibly refreshing to hear such honesty and first person accounting of it all (especially from someone so nice with the wordplay and the pen), so here’s a good long chat with Laura Dockrill - give it some time and focus.

This is the final in the month long series which has seen Pip engage in a huge collage of conversations to co-incide with Mental Health Week, while extending the theme into the whole month of May. It’s been a thoroughly fascinating journey, as we have heard from so many brilliant people (Pip reels off the names at the start in case you’ve missed any!) and received a true insight as to where people’s heads have been and are at. It’s a unique time, but a time for the books, and these conversations are so crucial as a time capsule of where we are now and where we were when listened back to in the future. It’s so easy to normalise and forget this stuff with the fullness of time, so having a few recorded conversations at that time where things are really changing quickly is all the more important to capture.
