Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

A very welcome and amazingly informative conversation with neuroscientist, musician and artist SIMON(E) SUN!

Without wanting to risk the simplification and distilling of this incredible chat, just rest assured that it’s one of those very special Distraction Pieces moments that I can safely say will echo through the DPP corridors for episodes to come - so here’s your chance to get in on the ground floor and prepare your appropriate beverages / walking routes / solo time (or indeed group listening time ahead of this one. It involves sex, gender and the myriad intricacies within (there’s that distilling I hinted at then!), from body to brain to hormone and beyond, and you’ll hear how it all came about too which is super interesting. There is always time to learn, evolve, and grow with what we know, and this is a perfect opportunity for those who want to broaden their knowledge or hear how to transmit said knowledge in a succinct and effective way. One for the books!

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

A properly ace conversation with the insightful and hilarious comic DANIEL SLOSS!

Pip catches Daniel 6 days deep in a 14 day quarantine overseas, which is of course the first item of business! The two compare notes on coping with such stints and methods of how to handle one’s self in isolation. From there on, we hear all about Daniel’s experiences in processing life into art and creativity and the many rewards and pitfalls involved. You may have seen his specials ‘X’ or ‘Jigsaw’, and you may even be among the many who have made drastic life changes as a result - this is an awesomely revealing behind the scenes of these and more, which includes his own lessons learned, the heavyweight complexities observed in writing some of them, the perils of clips being shown out of context, and the intensely tricky world of finding someone to love and who loves you in return. Oof, this one’s got it all. You shall enjoy.

Oh also - some of the sharper four letter words in here too, in case you’re playing this in the company of those whose ears might not be ready or prepared. Just so you know…

A super great chat with KALYN HEFFERNAN of the group WHEELCHAIR SPORTS CAMP!

Whether you know it or now, this is the one you’ve been waiting for. Pip catches up with Kalyn Heffernan of Wheelchair Sports Camp for a full length podcast, which is a beautiful occasion as this means that there are a LOT of people who will make acquaintances with a truly awesome human being, while also being made aware of a bulletproof back catalogue! For those of us who do know Kalyn and the crew, it’s a wonderful opportunity to catch an in depth rundown of the years events… Expect to hear about all things pandemically related up top - naturally - but with much ground being swiftly covered thereafter including Kalyn’s music production and artistic world through the past and into the future (some mad stuff in the works), cookery and making a mess, speaking of mess - the ill single ‘Yess I’m A Mess’ (Pip’s been bending my ear about this one for MONTHS now and it’s a heavy banger), Kalyn’s brittle bones and her lifetime of operations and treatment, activism, perspectives on disability and seeing the world entirely differently through touring, B Dolan and all things involving their introduction and how they’ve become tight homies over the years, Denver and its unique environment geographically and socially, fighting for change while acknowledging privilege and innumerable other treats. Such a great one right here. Make it your next listen.

A lovely chat with Inbetweeners star and football / MMA enthusiast BLAKE HARRISON!

You might very well know Blake as Neil, from The Inbetweeners - and some of you may know him extremely well as Neil if you’ve seen every episode, so here is a perfect opportunity to get to know Blake as a true and living person behind the script! He and Pip kick off with pandemic privilege and easily transition into work and acting, including tying your identity into your profession, remembering who the f*ck you are, having dayjobs around the first season of Inbetweeners, Peckham upbringings, the trials and tribulations of being a Millwall fan, MMA and his new podcast with Drunkcast homie Stu Whiffen and a ton more.

A great and very cool, calm and collected chat with UK acting royalty who has been a welcome fixture on screens great and small, it’s JOHN SIMM!

While a good gang of you will know John through Human Traffic (I mean come on), or maybe Life On Mars, or perhaps his new show Grace - or let’s face it, his entire film and tv-ography, but he was also in a band for a stretch back then too! All of this is of course covered in the conversation he had with Pip over Zoom, which includes pandemical flex, being a teenager again through PS2, being in a literal Dad Band, freedom to be himself in front of others through acting, learning acting, and all things craft, skill and inspiration. Tons in here, you’ll love it.

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

Once again, paths that have been log eluding each other have finally converged and here we are, as Pip finally meets the amazing singer songwriter RAG’N’BONE MAN!

Judging by the Youtube views for his single ‘Human’, as one of the billion+ viewers and fans, YOU - dear listener - are probably partly responsible for his astronomic rise to stardom from humble beginning in Uckfield / Brighton. And he we are! The homie is a household name. So hear his tale from beginning to end, from said beginnings to doing PR through a pandemic, the formulations and assembly of his new album, Nashville (obviously not the US series, great as it was), scenes in London and Brighton, paying dues, stage presence, opening for Pharoahe Monch and other such legends, lockdown with the kid, achieving warmth in his new record, getting a band in a room and more… Excellent stuff, enjoy and keep an ear out for the new album!

B Dolan - The Surgery Episode • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #376 Mar 19, 2021

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

Joining Pip this week for a bonus episode is the gawd, the GOAT, the king bee himself - please welcome Mr B DOLAN!

A very welcome return from friend of the podcast B Dolan, and what makes this return even more triumphant and welcome is that B has survived not only another Winter (word to the Strange Famous crew), but an incredible amount of physical pain and endured some proper body wars over the past year. You will hear all about it within the episode, but I can safely assure you that this is a very sobering listen, especially for all B fans and listeners. This is the full story from the man himself about a traumatic year - pandemic aside - but one which is lined with gold, silver and diamonds and an ultimately positive outcome. It’s also one of inspiration, outlooks and hope, as B has had to change all business models and try some incredibly exciting new things in that realm. I don’t want to spoil anything but this is an amazing episode that you will get a huge amount from, regardless of whether you’ve heard of B or not. On a personal note - this is producer Buddy Peace writing this - B, I have something for you which is almost finished so bear with me big homie… This episode really hurt my heart a lot - but made me chuckle too. It’s a tough one but as I say - there is a lot of room for levity. So let’s all toast the king Bee and may his reign of dopeness continue long. Never has his song ‘Still Here’ been more pertinent.

A real feelgood dip in the ever-refreshing acting pool for you this week as Pip is joined by national treasure JANE HORROCKS!

Not only an actor though, our Jane - she’s been singing forever and more recently has taken her own dip into the equally refreshing pool of podcasting, which is how this whole episode came about. So we all collectively thank the good lord of Pod for that (amen). A really nice chat which takes in the whole world of Jane, from her lockdown routine of cycling and being very present in observing the changing of the seasons, the importance of pausing, podcasting about bees, writing shows, new romantics, retention and finding her crowd, along with all pertinent origin stories! A bright and breezy one to perk up your mid-week right here, please enjoy!

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

Following on from a triple episode week of pure musical commentary, here is a straight up excellent chat with the powerful and acclaimed writer NIKESH SHUKLA!

So much to get into on this one, and Nikesh and Pip cram a huge amount into what could certainly go on for a good few more hours. Nikesh’s new book ‘Brown Baby’ is available now with an accompanying podcast, and you’ll hear most of the foundation upon which it was all born here in this chat. It’s a big one, ranging from the deep questions posed by kids, being ‘authentically Asian’ and the minimal quotas for ‘Indian’ authors, diversity panels, the publisher Unbound, the all seeing Grandfather of the podcast at this point aka Musa Okawonga, the toll taken on his soul in promoting his books, the under/overcurrent of racism from seed to weed (I just made that up but it feels appropriate), raising kids to feel joy, Oscar Brown Jr via Nina Simone, and his past days as a rapper. So much CONTENT! Haha. Just playing. Enjoy, it’s a goodie.
