Gaspar Noe • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #452 May 10, 2022

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by directing legend GASPAR NOE!

Given that Pip had a mere handful of hours to prepare before that nerve jangling Zoom chat admission screen came up, this chat with Gaspar Noe went as smooth as you could possibly imagine. If you're a long term listener, you'll understand the reverence to which Pip applies to the director of Irreversible, Enter The Void, and new film Vortex among others, and so it must have been a daunting but incredible chance to form the experience into a podcast - as you will hear, it not only covers Noe's recent brush with death and subsequent recovery, but also his process, the importance of casting and crew, life, love, substances, and film in general. It's almost an episode of Films To Be Buried With, to be honest. Have a look at the references below if you miss anything - most are here - but otherwise, enjoy this amazing chat with Gaspar Noe and lifelong Gaspar Noe fan Pip!

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by acting superhero BENEDICT WONG!

A marvelous and Marvel-ful episode as Pip has a long overdue catch up with the Salford hero Benedict Wong, which comes equiped with good vibes, positivity and inspiring nuggets from all sides. Kicking off with some record dealings up top, we glide into such matters as London acting gig drama, Mancunian origins, the great Sean Lock and working on 15 Storeys High, Dirty Pretty Things, Top Boy, internalising racism while working in the family chippie, representing himself as Wong & Only, the Marvel Universe, Wong Is Wong, Meisner, and just too much to be bulletpointed here basically. You know you'll love it.

Accountability In Activism • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #450 Apr 28, 2022

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

A very special bonus episode as Pip talks with LISA SIMPSON, whose son was killed by police in 2016.

Before going in, know that this episode is obviously a heavy one with many nuanced elements. Lisa has been actively vocal about her feelings and experiences with the Black Lives Matter movement since her son Richard Risher was murdered by the Los Angeles Police Department on July 25th 2016. Not only has she had to face burying her son, and dealing with the aftermath of the law being responsible for his death, she's also had to deal with negative run ins with the Black Lives Matter movement who have made false promises to her for a while now, among other grievances.

It's her experience to share, and her story to tell, and is a layered problem which you'll see as you hear from Lisa. This is in the interest of balance, as Patrisse Cullors of BLM guested on episode 195 of Distraction Pieces (linked below), so it's only fair Lisa has her right to reply.

Quality actorial goodness is on the table again for your listening enjoyment, as we get to engage in an hour of real nourishing and inspiring chat between Emer and Pip. Highly recommended for Emer fans and those not so aware, and for the latter, you're about to become fast friends - together they cover the lot, from origins, to process, her family of builders, how her mum influenced her in her teen years, angry running, rainy snoggin', saying yes to it all, The Curse, Save Me, Eastenders, acting with Seapa and so much more. Awesome, you'll dig it.

Hayley Campbell • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #445 Mar 29, 2022

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by journalist, author and presenter HAYLEY CAMPBELL!

You’re probably familiar with the age old dilemma of ‘Cake or death?’ - well, you’re about to hear a podcast which contains firstly takeaway, and then death. So it’s not worlds away, let’s say. This is a well overdue meeting of Pip and Hayley who get along like old pals from the get go, beginning with - as stated - takeaway habits and secret condiment hacks that will level up your sauce game (you can thank Hayley), and branches off into pandemic nostalgia, fitness, cinemas, parents, Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, comic books, but more importantly - death. Hayley’s new book ‘All The Living And The Dead’ addressed the dead. Not the dying or the grieving. The dead. You wouldn’t think it was an overlooked sector but death is a strange one. A fascinating chat which deals with so much but with a good heart and no gloominess, but worth mentioning that those who struggle with the subject might be well warned to tread lightly. Just saying. Enjoy!
