Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by author and poet CECILIA KNAPP!

A perfect chance to catch up with Cecilia, and a lovely one to file alongside past episodes with DPP alumni Kae Tempest, Polarbear, Musa Okwonga and so on. Cecilia and Pip go back as far as the days of Bestival, and it’s lovely to hear about the journey she’s taken and the many moments of day and night along the way. We hear about the actual factual nuts and bolts of the process of writing (which includes actual human emotions and real life moments), share some moments of her family all along the way (to those of a more sensitive nature, you might want to tread carefully by the way - it’s a touch heavy), hear about her early days and entry points into spoken word and poetry which involves said Polarbear / Steve Camden, as well as the also great Jack Rooke, channeling grief, the CALM organisation, being in creative bubbles, and dipping in and out of characters in her novel ‘Little Boxes’. Hugely inspiring. dive in and enjoy!

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by writer, actor and director CRAIG ROBERTS!

For those who know their cinema and tv, you’ll surely be well aware of Craig and his back catalog of goodness but if not, at the very least, you must have seen at least the cover for the film Submarine… Either way - you’re in for a treat of a chat with the Welsh sureshot himself as he goes into it all with Pip. Everything including growing up in Wales, acting origin stories, sounding toooo Welsh, directing and doing so during a pandemic, being on both sides of the camera, the great Mark Rylance, the also great Shaheen Baig (rapidly becoming the DPP godmother), the scourge of over-rehearsing, Richard Ayoade, and golf! Be sure to catch Craig’s film ‘Phantom Of The Open’ too - do not miss that one.

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by writer, actor and singer/songwriter NICÔLE LECKY!

A wonderful chat with Nicôle who has been putting in WORK for a long while now, and a chance to hear about said work including the run up to doing what she does and how those early seeds started growing. Not only that, we get to hear about her own process, the not very diverse world of drama back in the day, her musical early days, her show Mood of course, curating a team, the world of sex work, being in Sense8 and working with the Wachowskis, from stage to screen, her cringe barometer and so much more. Amazing stuff and pure inspirational - you shall enjoy.

Stephen Fry • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #440 Mar 02, 2022

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined, at long last, by national treasure STEPHEN FRY!

Simply using the term ‘national treasure’ doesn’t do any kind of justice whatsoever to who or what Stephen is, does and has done, of course. But it’s pretty tough to dispute. Long term (and casual) Pip listeners will already know the line ‘Thou shalt not question Stephen Fry’ - well, Pip breaks the holy rap commandment and does just that, and it’s a joy to behold. Naturally there’s only so many tips of icebergs one can introduce in an hour, but rest assured that you get the full Pip and Fry experience including pandemic times, social media, Greeks and Romans and history as a whole, tattoos, religion, politics - it’s like if you had a dinner party with him but condensed into a lunch break. So enjoy this hang time with Stephen and let’s hope that it only leads to more! Enjoy.

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by comic, writer, actor and podcaster BETH GRANVILLE!

In a kind of mirror-type episode of Wednesday with Lucy Pinder, this is Lucy's podcasting pal from the Smashing Sundays podcast who now has the spotlight fixed firmly on her for an episode! Beth is incredibly busy, as you will surely deduce by the end of this, but busy in a reassuringly comfortable way. With so many projects on the go and in the archives, it's fascinating to hear how it all comes together, as well as the origin story of it all. A good chunk of that takes place in Wales, where we currently find her, and leads on from there including all the writing, concepts, projects, series, gigs, everything else included. So enjoy this deep dive with Beth Granville, the perfect way to zip up the week and prepare for a perfect Sunday with her and Lucy! Enjoy.

Lucy Pinder • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #438 Feb 23, 2022

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by actress, TV star and podcaster LUCY PINDER!

A delightful chat bringing in loads of feelgood action, with a dash of triumph over adversity in there for good measure. From her days back in Winchester, we hear about her path to publicity and being involved in the world of early 00's lad culture and glamour modeling from a chance day off at the beach, which led to a huge amount of ups and downs as the path began to stabilise. What this did lead to though is a ton of good things which we hear about, as well as thoughts on pandemic walks and rituals, reclaiming Sundays and releasing podcasts on them, the difference between fun and selfishness these days to back then, rebranding being single and so much more besides. Get involved, you’ll love this one.

Tom Davis • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #437 Feb 16, 2022

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined for a second appearance by awesome acting friend, the great TOM DAVIS!

Heavyweight listeners will recall episode 58, back in September 2015, all those years ago, when young Tom joined Pip for a debut appearance. Tom brings up the ribbing he got recently from pal Seapa on said appearance, but by all means listen back and decide for yourself...! It's always nice to compare and contrast though so why not double bill the episodes... But anyway - back to the present. This one's another joyous get together with Pip and Tom, going into the old days of Murder In Successville, the things he's working on now, the days of being a labourer and the transition to acting, starting a company, the many projects he's involved in including his podcast with Romesh, and all that good good stuff. Have fun with Tom Davis!

Mopes (fka Prolyphic) • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #436 Feb 11, 2022

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the artist formerly known as Prolyphic, it's Strange Famous's MOPES!

The last time Pip saw Mopes was in his former guise in 2013, and hooo boy has a lot happened in the interim... From name changes to all kinds of life stuff, it's a tale as old as time - take a chunk of someone's life and explore and you'll find (hopefully) huge evolutions and transitions. It's a pleasure to hear them catch up and reminisce over the old days of what was occasionally refered to as 'weird / leftfield / alternative' hip hop. What a funny time for genre naming that was. Personally I blame cLOUDDEAD. Anyway... For those into that era and sound, and those into hip hop, or just those who enjoy the story of someone with a ton of awesome experiences, buckets of honesty, and a large serving of realness - this will be of absolute importance. Check his new work HERE!

You can also check his old work which I (Buddy Peace) produced, on the album 'Working Man'. I was on that tour they talk about in 2013 too! Hell of a time y'all.

Enjoy the chat!

Geowizard aka Tom Davies • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #435 Feb 09, 2022

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by Youtube geography champ and amazing idea generator GEOWIZARD!

Otherwise known as Tom Davies, of course. Some of you might be all like "Who in the good name of all things Youtubular is Geowizard now?", while some of you might in contrast be all like "Ahh, YES!" - well, either way, both camps are in for a treat. Tom has been making amazing videos with some concepts that make you instantly wonder how it hasn't been done already (in so much as it's such a pure, organic idea), and Pip's been down with him for a while. So you'll get to hear all about the straight line challenge, GeoGuessr (involving figuring out where you are after being dropped on Google Maps, using only context clues), how it all kicked in and got started, the idea of a 'real job', hard work out in the field (literally), being chased by angry farmers and a huge amount more. All will be made clearer by Pip and Tom from the intro onwards, so fear not - if this all sounds puzzling, give it a shot because this could very well be your next thing...Enjoy!
