Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by brilliant actor and podcaster LAURA CHECKLEY!

We catch Laura at a really exciting time of life, having been recently married which has also led to greater revelations about the good old fashioned work - life balance. It turns out Laura can take time off after all! I'm sure a lot of us can relate to how huge that revelation can be. On top of all this goodness, Laura expands on an attitude of luck and gratitude, the writers strikes in the US, being a natural born mimic from a really early age, Brit School and the acting ladder, podcasts and comedy beginnings. And if this is your first time encountering Laura, don't be shy - look at the links below and get involved. ENJOY!

Psychedelics w/ Andy Mitchell • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #533 Sep 26, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by neuropsychologist and author ANDY MITCHELL!

A wildly interesting chat with Pip about not just the broad area of psychedelics, but the culture surrounding them and some of the modern spins on it all that we might be encountering on our travels. With all the wide world of psychedelics, it's really fascinating to hear about the side that sometimes doesn't get looked at, and to get some light shone on it with a slightly different perspective. A refreshing and neutral take too, without a huge amount of baggage hitched onto the wagon. Loads of angles, ideas and takes in fact, so definitely add this to your greater explorations! And check Andy's book too - link below...

Otto Baxter • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #532 Sep 19, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by actor and director OTTO BAXTER!

...and joined by PETER BEARD and BRUCE FLETCHER of course. The trio here are responsible for the horror film 'The Puppet Asylum', and the documentary about Otto and the making of said film, 'Otto Baxter: Not A F*cking Horror Story'. Otto lives with Down Syndrome, which is of course not the main focus of this ace human but something that has had an affect on his world since birth. It's a great thing to hear about the making of the feature and the documentary, and a cool way of looking at such a creative outpouring. In this chat you hear the loud and proud Otto himself and from the directors involved who make a great pyramid of setup, explanation, discussion and general fun. At times you might notice that it's not the most calm, meditative and laidback ride BUT please don't let that draw you away - it's a really cool look at the world of Otto and the worlds Otto has created. Enjoy!

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by actor, writer and comic ANDI OSHO!

Another delightful time right here for you, as Pip and Andi catch up and get right into all things of interest quickly and with no hesitation. So much ground gets covered and it's all super inspiring, including bodies and minds and neuroplasticity, dealing with energies at school, earnestness and not feeling the cynicism, spending time being out of touch with pop music, logic puzzles of standup, bookwriting mechanics, winning the room and acting on the whole - as well as all that amazing connective tissue that comes with it... A great time so do not pass this one up.

Susan Wokoma • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #530 Sep 05, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by actor and writer and second time guest SUSAN WOKOMA!

A true delight right here as Susan jumps back in the DPP game for another sureshot episode, and as you'll hear - and as you'd expect - in about 6 years or so SO MUCH HAS HAPPENED. But also, reassuringly there's a lot left on the side so this bodes well for a third appearance in the future...!

Amongst the goodness you can expect from Susan in this Grade A ep, we get to hear about her strut, her younger days Helen Mirren obsession, the enforced scarcity mentality of women in the industry, industry dissillusionment, being comfortable in her body, Cheaters, life re-evaluations, the turning point of reductive and weird feedback, pride in comedic acting, how tough comedic acting is, working with the awesome Deborah Frances-White and the importance of passion. Jewels and gems to be gained especially if you're someone involved in the industry or considering it. Go back and peep the first ep if you missed it! ENJOY!

Josh Pugh • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #529 Aug 29, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by comic excellence and ace human being JOSH PUGH!

One of those geniunely organic episodes which seems to form from the ground up and find a rhythm and pace all of its own. A lovely look into the mind of Josh, who specialises in comedy and standup but with a very social approach, which feels like it stems from his work in the social sector over the years. That comes up later which is fascinating and really great to hear about, but expect to hear everything from the other points of his life, including his recent Fringe work in progress run, to the origins and roots in comedy, vision impairment, social media, people who "crack the algorithm" and all the other things it takes to be a part of the comedy world. Great stuff, and very inspiring. Enjoy!

ALSO - Pip indicates this in the intro but just in case, there's a little 5 minute bonus with Blindboy around halfway through the ep. All will make sense. And it's much fun.

Shaggy • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #528 Aug 22, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by dancehall champion and superstar reggae musician SHAGGY!

Very broadly speaking, a lot of you will know Shaggy as Mr Boombastic, or the guy who did Oh Carolina and It Wasn't Me. But dig a little deeper and there are worlds of releases and shows and all sorts of stories from the past that are just too exciting and interesting to pass up on... And that's what makes this last minute convo with Pip and Shaggy so awesome! It's the stories behind the hits that are amazing, and the historical signifigance of them too. But in that world, of course there will be all kinds of run-ins, collabos, tales and amazing anecdotes, and Shaggy delivers on all counts. So whether you're a full on dancehall reggae appreciator or someone who remembers the name, don't miss this one - it's super entertaining and a fascinating trip from start to end.
