Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

Pip is joined for the second time this week by the wonderful actor that is ROSIE MARCEL!

YES this is the much hinted at and inquired about episode from the archives that was never aired, for reasons that - with the passage of time - seem trivial, but at the time itself were very sensitive indeed. What's cool about hearing this episode after the previous newer recording with Rosie is how the ground was looking back then in an acting as well as very personal sense. It's what's cool about hearing two podcasts consecutively which have a space of about 4 or 5 years between them, in fact. So many questions answered, so many still left hanging, and so much life on display - it gets pretty existential when you think about it - so without any further rumination, let's leave the investigation to you! As always, a glorious chat with Rosie, and such a lot to dig into, and make sure you look at the dog charities and causes out there too if you're in the market for a dog friend. A ton of options. But also don't hurry it at this time of year - you know the old saying eh... ANYWAY - onwards - enjoy this archival treasure!

Rosie Marcel • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #544 Dec 06, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the incredible acting treasure that is ROSIE MARCEL!

You might know Rosie from her role as Jac on 600 episodes of Holby City - but it's entirely possible that you know her from the vast IMDB list and have never seen an episode of Holby City in your life... OR maybe this is the first time you've seen the name. Well, it goes without saying that Rosie is a genuine treat to have on the podcast. There is a bonus coming on Friday too, which is like a rare studio cutting room floor discovery type episode, where she and Pip recorded back around 2019 but it was never put out. So hopefully that sets up a bit of where this episode's energy and spirit can be traced back to. You'll hear about so much, including going from work to no work, losing a friend in the character of Jac (and how she found out about her role coming to and end), transitions and lifestyle pivots, cold water benefits and rescuing dogs via the Pack Project (link below!). SO MUCH MORE TOO. Enjoy, and come back Friday for the unreleased heat!

William Oldroyd • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #543 Dec 01, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the excellent director WILLIAM OLDROYD!

Another perfect meeting here for Pip and all film heads who listen to this (and as always, anyone into creative process and inspiration), as William talks about all of the intricacies and moments of lightning in a bottle that come together to result in amazing cinema - including his past movie Lady Macbeth and present movie Eileen. It is though, of course, usually not by accident as so much hard work goes into allowing these moments to happen, and working with fine cast members always goes a huge distance. This is a great little masterclass in what can be possible, how things merge and collaborate, and how memorable films are prepared, made, and their legacy. And how the cold makes everything better. A controversial but indisputable view...!

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by actor, comic and podcaster BILAL ZAFAR!

A lovely meeting with Bilal, which gets into the under the bonnet mechanics of this multi-disciplined superstar with a lot of fun in the process. Bilal balances many different hats including acting, podcasts, comedy and streaming too so it's fascinating to hear how all that works. So much, including the Fringe and the complexities within, streaming and comedy in pandemic times, out of sync reviews, Chris Morris and the usefulness of satire, Pro Evo Soccer, endometriosis (check the link below for more on that), podcasting and finding the fun in acting. As you can see, it's a wide ranging one...! ENJOY!

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by musician, writer and comic JOSH WELLER!

...and by no means a debut appearance from Josh, as you might remember an appearance a LONG while back in October 2018! At time of this episode that's 5 years. How much can happen in 5 years? Well there's a fine Bowie jam about that but in this case, it involves a career arc of launching into standup. No easy thing to do, as literally anyone will tell you in comedy, but Josh has taken to it with grace and finesse, made an awesome Fringe show, and rocked a bunch of venues up and down the country. All while pumping out astute and hilarious TikToks like nobody's business. Hear a new Josh who speaks with insight, reflection and a delightful self deprecation that always appeals. A terrific return from J-Dubz right here!

Emerald Fennell • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #540 Nov 15, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by actor, writer and director EMERALD FENNELL!

An excellent chat with the very awesome Emerald, whose work you will likely have caught up with over the past few years in any one of her many capacities. Playing Camilla on The Crown, writing on Killing Eve, or writing and directing 2020's brilliant Promising Young Woman. Here we catch up with Emerald in promotionland to hear about her new film Saltburn, which we'll see in cinemas around mid-November. But as you will know from this podcast, it's not as basic as simple promotion - Pip gets into a lot of the mechanics of Emerald's world, including process, world building, reference, inspiration, small and big screen, casting, personal idea hierarchies, and so much more. It's a real pleasure to hear about it all in depth, so set aside some time to really enjoy this one. You shall!

Lowkey • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #539 Nov 08, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by commentator, activist and rapper LOWKEY!

This is Lowkey's second appearance on Distraction Pieces, in what feels right now like a section that ought to be there every episode. Lowkey is very well versed on matters involving Israel and Palestine and the situation past and present, so this episode was recorded a day before it was released to be as up to date as possible. Pip caught up with Lowkey at 10pm on a Monday, and if you heard his previous appearance, you'll know that this is the kind of episode where you'll almost want to keep a pen and pad nearby to take notes. Of course it's good to have a wide range of views and opinions, but it's fair to say that Lowkey has a very well informed and sharp understanding of history and a present awareness that not everyone does. So in a time where you can hear random unfiltered opinion (and often opinion which wasn't invited either), it's a relief to have some sane, balanced and calm tones to hear on what's going on. Let's leave it to the episode to speak for itself but definitely give this one some time and attention, and by all means share far and wide.

Aodh Breathnach • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #538 Nov 01, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by documentary and film maker AODH BREATHNACH!

Just quickly - a little assist on pronunciations when talking about this episode - AODH is like a capital 'A', and BREATHNACH is like 'Brennok'. In case you need it! Also - trigger warnings in this episode for knife crime and trauma, in case these subjects cause discomfort for you.

Aodh is a skilled and experienced documentary producer, who has recently completed one of the tougher productions in his career - one centred around his own lived experience as a survivor of knife crime. A heavy and tough sounding viewing for sure, involving a traumatic period in the director's life (and one shared, unfortunately, with many) - but listening to Aodh talking about how he handled it, the ramifications and echoes, and the world he now navigates is an inspiring and positive thing indeed. This violent side of society doesn't pop out of nowhere, and it's interesting hearing about the tremors, potential causes and some of the accelerants that are in the mix with it all. There are also many activists and organisations out there offering assistance, which will be linked below. Be sure to watch Aodh's doc 'Scars' on BBC, and engage in the rest of what he's doing too. Some great work being done.

Philip Barantini • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #537 Oct 24, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by director, screenwriter and producer PHILIP BARANTINI!

This episode has been hinted at for a minute now, and anyone who's picking up crumbs on the acting breadcrumb trail will already be aware that Stephen Grahame is essentially the spiritual godfather of this whole podcast. Well DPP fam, here's Philip - a frequent Stephen collaborator and fellow Liverpudlian, who has spent his fair share of time on both sides of the camera. What's so cool about this chat is that it only goes to further prove how much humanity and basic decency there is in film making. We sometimes see and hear examples to the contrary, of course, but this just makes those in the industry who are caring and feel no need to make these vulgar displays of ego shine brightest. Enjoy this lovely chat with Philip and Pip, and watch Boiling Point in film and television series incarnations at your nearest convenience!

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by writer and director (of 'Host' and more) JED SHEPHERD, and also Chris and Stu from Hardcore Listing!

A celebration of all things slept on TV shows, and many of these you will be forgiven for never having heard of them in your life (I definitely hadn't heard of a bunch). Jed has a new short film on Netflix called 'Flashback' starring your very own Pip, so peep that and all future goodies from him, watch Host (now you've heard the behind the scenes stuff!), and check some of the slept on underground TV hits if you get a moment!
