Jon Ronson • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #515 May 30, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by national treasure and rabbit hole journalist, author and podcaster JON RONSON!

Rabbit-hole journalist is of course used in loving jest, as he kind of says the same himself in the course of the podcast. Jon loves a rabbit hole. And it's evident in his work which is pure story-upon-story heaven for the curious minded among us, which will of course appeal to those with a liking for Louis Theroux, Adam Curtis and Nick Broomfield for instance - but Jon has carved his own niche in the world of journalism and in depth investigation, making unique findings and bringing huge amounts of wild and interesting material to the forefront of culture. So make some time to hear what Jon's been up to, the process, the work, the revelations and the reality behind the whole Ronson machine. And definitely check out his new series on Audible, 'The Debutante'. You'll love it, for certain.

Balmer (autism, parenting, Twitch) • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #514 May 23, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by Twitch legend BALMER to talk all things parenting and indeed, Twitch!

The term 'Twitch legend' is doing all sorts of work there, and for those uninitiated, you may need some assistance. Twitch is the livestreaming platform for people to either observe or take part in art, sports, gaming, music, every conceivable activity that can be filmed essentially. Within appropriate broadcast law, obvs. Gaming happens to be Balmer's chosen discipline (with some improv and role play in there too), and as one of Pip's favourite streamers there must be a reason for him to guest on DPP right? Correct. Balmer is not only a truly unique gamer with a wild and memorable presence, he is also a parent of an autistic son. He and Pip catch up on everything involved with that part of the story, which is fascinating and inspiring, shedding light on the 'system' as we know it, and how it works with and against this area of neurodivergence. While the episode does deal with parenting and Twitch, those who are not parents nor Twitch afficionados may be confident in knowing it's a lovely episode with warmth and awesomeness throughout. Maybe you don't know the name (yet) - but trust that it's a lovely ep.

Florence & Reed (Come Curious) • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #513 May 16, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by Florence & Reed from the almighty COME CURIOUS podcast!

Of course, the podcast is one aspect of both of their wide and varied skillset, but it's a hugely important and awesome element - even in terms of reframing 'sex positive' as 'sex honest'. Florence and Reed have been making power moves in the world of sex work, including being active within it, fighting for rights and equality, and ensuring that things don't get misrepresented and blurry along the way. As you'll hear, the work they do is not easy by any means. It is a fascinating chat tho, as we hear about their road to podcasting, how to navigate relationships as podcasters and sex workers, the difference between attraction and appreciation (and how they may blend), having a tangible item out in the world (a book) vs making invisible art (podcasts), and a huge amount of other goodness along the way. Nothing too graphic here but perhaps if you're playing in the presence of younger folk, it could be worth being around for occasional explanations! ENJOY - it's a lovely one.

James Acaster • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #512 May 09, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by show favourite, renowned comic and now grand producer JAMES ACASTER!

Some might consider this a kind of trojan horse episode, in that it's not wall to wall "Let's talk about comedy and Taskmaster" - no, this time, Pip catches up with James about his new role as producer and orchestrator behind the new sprawling music project 'Temps'! The project itself is a truly adventurous step to bring together a ton of different worlds, but revolving around a main concept of everyone being a unique and necessary presence on the album. Highly regarded rappers and musicians coming together in ways that even us fans would be refreshingly surprised by. It features so prominently in this episode because don't forget - Pip comes from this world, but has also been a fan and friend of James' for many years now, so if you're feeling wary of hearing the comic you like talking about an album of music, leave that wariness at the door and put your faith in the podcast. It's excellent stuff, and there's some acting and TV bits at the end too of cours! Have fun!

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the awesome writer, podcaster, curator and film critic ANNA BOGUTSKAYA!

Hopefully you will know Anna and her prolific works at this point but in the event that you've been caught napping, this is a perfect introduction to the encyclopedic film lover herself... This is the perfect episode for all cinephiles, covering so many elements of the on-screen universe and much of the psychology behind it which will absolutely prove for a truly enjoyable listen. From being an interviewer vs interviewed, to the importance of listening and reacting, how the viewing position changes depending on what you're viewing for, switching up a shy nature, extolling the virtues of the horror genre, how the rules are different according to gender norms, and of course her incredible new book 'Unlikeable Female Characters'. It goes without saying that Anna is 100% likeable so please, listen and enjoy.

Fantasy Film Casting (w/Chris & Stu) • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #510 Apr 25, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by Drunkast and Hardcore Listing mates CHRIS & STU!

The theme of this week is simple but has vast potential for pure world building... Pip invited Chris and Stu along to do some good old fashioned stuntcasting - where you basically re-cast films and TV shows with a cast of your own assemblage. The results? Chaotic and amazing. But ALWAYS grounds for debate and good old fashioned chat. A whole episode's worth, at that! So give yourself over to the casting agents of the Drunkast squadron (this isn't a Drunkast but, ya know) and let them re-envision, in front your eyes, Thundercats, The Breakfast Club and The A-Team. Good fun for all. ENJOY!

Johnny Harris • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #509 Apr 18, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the warm, ace and uplifting actor JOHNNY HARRIS!

Johnny's been incredibly busy over the last few decades, as a quick glimpse at his storied IMDB page will display. So of course you can expect to hear a ton of good old fashioned acting chat right here. But on top of that, you'll also be treated to a ton of good old fashioned friendly and uplifting back and forth too. Johnny's interests and skills go beyond acting, so you'll hear about his boxing origins which fed into the film 'Jawbone', his music love which led him to meeting and working with his heroes (Whoever said "Don't meet your heroes" maaay have just had a terrible experience with theirs? Just a thought...), and just a proper full episode of awesomeness. Jump in and enjoy, you certainly shall.

John Kearns • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #508 Apr 11, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the excellent and hilarious comic JOHN KEARNS!

You might know John from his appearances on Taskmaster. You might know John from his memorable appearance on stage as a comedian (rocking the false teeth and wig). But here's a perfect chance to get to know John as the human behind it all, the master at the controls. It's a brilliant chat which covers all the ground you would hope for, but also offers some fascinating insight into what goes on behind the "mask" - and what is a "mask" anyway? Some really interesting ground for discussion but also all the tangents, fun and stray observations you would want too, including crowd and audience attitude, and cadence. Lotsa cadence. Lovely stuff - enjoy!

Drunk Women Solving Crime • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #507 Apr 04, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by veteran true crime comedy podcast trio DRUNK WOMEN SOLVING CRIME!

...of course the three women in question who form the trio have names - Taylor, Hannah and Catie - and all three are here to chat all things podcasts, origin stories and more! A lot more, by the way. It's a joy to hear the team catch up and talk about all the things that maybe even people who listen to DWSC aren't up to speed on, and so it's a great ep for people who are full on fans as well as those uninitiated. But those who fall into the latter category will be rapidly converted, so prepare to add another podcast to your agenda. True crime fans - rejoice! You're in for so many treats.
