Brandon Cronenberg • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #505 Mar 22, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by director BRANDON CRONENBERG!

If half of that name rings bells to those of you not versed too hard in the cinema world, you are indeed correct - Brandon's father is David, who you will surely be familiar with in some way! Brandon's been carving a unique niche in the horror scene with some truly psychedelic adventures in the genre, and you'll be happy to know that he goes into a lot of the technique in this chat with Pip. Honestly, you couldn't have guessed some of this stuff - and better yet, it's all in-camera (basically meaning, not computer FX). So prepare for some fantastic process talk, greater ideas within the films, and some nice action for those who saw and loved Possessor, Infinity Pool and the rest in the catalogue. As always with these chats which may seem specifically bound to a certain discipline - if you are creative in any way, or enjoy creativity - you will absolutely get a lot from this. So fear not, horror fan or otherwise - you'll love it.

Bisha K. Ali • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #504 Mar 15, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the incredible screenwriter BISHA K. ALI!

An absolute must listen episode, firstly for those interested and invested in the acting and cinema/television kingdom, but also for those who want to hear a straight up brilliant episode full of honesty, truth and heart. Of course you get the shop talk - process, creativity, the whole science of it all (and the Marvel multiverse of course)- which is amazing in itself, but you also get some wondefully vulnerable and soulful thoughts and experiences on mental health, diversity, and how this ties everything together in a much more macro sense. It actually plays out like a perfect screenplay in many ways, which is no surprise. I mean. It's Bisha K. Ali! Enjoy, take notes, listen fully.

Natalia Tena • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #503 Mar 08, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the brilliant actor and musician NATALIA TENA!

The instant connection that will be of note to Distraction Pieces Network followers, is that Natalia starred next to Brett Goldstein in Superbob - which hopefully you will have seen by now! BUT - consider that something of a sidebar to this conversation as here, we get to hear everything about Natalia in a solo capacity. From boat life, to mind opening Patagonia journeys, to dream jobs and being part of film crews almost like a family, her band and how the tale began and unfolds, accordions, Harry Potter, John Wick, and the whole acting science in general. Amazing stuff and a brilliant look at what Natalia's been up to and is about to do - listen in!

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the duo of incredible poet and filmmaker SAUL WILLIAMS and stellar actor and playwright ANISIA UZEYMAN!

Saul is back on the Distraction Pieces couch for his second appearance in the show's history (first time was incredible), and as you can well imagine, you're in for treats galore. Not only that, you can double up on said treats by adding the wonderful Anisia Uzeyman into the mix, as the two drop science in an orderly fashion! A huge amount of perspective, viewpoint and opinion which you will definitely enjoy being in on, but also you'll hear about their film Neptune Frost. If you haven't seen or heard about the film, for goodness sake look at the trailer for some context - it's incredible, and will give a perfect foundation for ths chat with the makers. Or better yet - watch the film. Fans of Saul will heavily appreciate this, and if you're familiar with the work of Anisia you'll love it. And all rounded up with some glorious hip hop anecdotery in case you forgot who you were dealing with here. ENJOY!

Ask Pip • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #501 Feb 22, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is flying solo to answer a flurry of questions from YOU, the listeners and viewers!

In keeping with Distraction Pieces tradition, Pip likes to have a week to himself from time to time and here we are, deep in mid-February, to open up the mailbag. Even saying 'mailbag' is such a nostalgia trigger for most of us. Didn't that kind of thing die out not long after the 90's arrived? What was it replaced by? Maybe that should have been my question for this episode. Anyway - expect a nice gathering of input from friends and fans and long/medium/short term listeners, with light shed on various topics from music to film to Twitch to everything besides. Just don't ask when we can expect more music. Deal? Deal. Enjoy episode 501, the denim edition.

DPP Episode 500! (Part 2 of 2) • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #500 Feb 17, 2023

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

Join Pip and producer Buddy Peace in a 'quincentenary' celebration as the podcast reaches episode 500! PART 2 of 2!

Pip and myself don't often sit down and recount the archives of the Distraction Pieces Podcast in an official capacity. We might refer back to episodes here and there, or talk in a bizarre shorthand only decipherable by us about certain prior events and occurances in the past. But this time we sat down and recorded a whole epic feature length episode of us doing the damn thing and here is part 2 of the double drop!

It was a pleasure and delight, and a real treat to give some context to this ongoing project which drops every Wednesday (and sometimes more), and find a space to stop, check in, celebrate, be still for a moment and look at what's happened over the years. Turns out A LOT HAS HAPPENED. But you would expect that right? So here it is, the second of two full conversations with me (Buddy Peace) and Pip, peppered with comments and questions from listeners throughout. This could even be a good first listen for some folks if they haven't heard it before, actually - definitely a huge amount of "Oh I'm listening that THAT one straight after this" type stuff.

Enjoy, and huge love to you all for being with us and supporting the Distraction Pieces Podcast. Love ya. XXX

PS: I looked up 'quincentenary' and everything.

Darren McGarvey aka Loki • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #499 Feb 08, 2023

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by Glasgow-based rapper, author and activist DARREN McGARVEY aka LOKI!

A thoroughly engaging and informative chat to light a fire under you right here, as Pip connects with Darren and jumps in the deep end from the very start! That's how we like it. It's actually perfect because Darren has a lot to say, all of which is guided towards society and shining a light on some of the sides of it that often get left in the shadows, ignored, or basically hidden from public view. He has skin in the game too, having lived in a part of Glasgow which hasn't always been what you might consider the safest part of town, and with alcoholism in the family, so it comes as no surprise that there's a feeling of catharthis in his quest to enlighten and create positivity in his work. Speaking of work, you can catch Darren on road not long after this podcast releases, and also make sure you peep his rap music which is proper too. Very sick stuff. A definite companion episode to previous guests such as Akala, Rutger Bregman and Emma Dabiri to name a few.

This week Pip is joined by acting superhero AMAR CHADHA-PATEL!

This is an awesome chat with Pip and Amar, which covers his beginnings working with the All Saints brand and hustling music videos, leading to Bestival projects at which he made first contact with Pip, set design and direction, various intricate tax issues and Twitter storms, process, enjoyment and happiness on set, and how to mature within a complex and unique industry. You'll pick up some true gems along the way but more importantly, hear an uninterrupted chat which you'll thoroughly enjoy. Get yourself started!
