Dear FoundHer…Real Founder Stories for Women Small Business Owners

Dear FoundHer… is a How I Built This–style podcast sharing real stories from female entrepreneurs, female founders, and women in business, especially women 40+, who are building companies on their own terms.

Hosted by award-winning entrepreneur Lindsay Pinchuk, each episode features honest, thoughtful conversations with women CEOs and founders navigating leadership, decision making, career pivots, and business growth. These are the stories behind the success, the lessons, the marketing strategies that actually work, and the leadership moments that shape women building and leading businesses.

From Bobbi Brown to Rebecca Minkoff, Peloton’s Jenn Sherman & Dr. Becky Kennedy to Gail Simmons, Dear FoundHer… brings you conversations with some of the most influential female founders and leaders of our time.

Dear FoundHer… explores what it looks like to grow a business with clarity and confidence, from starting a company for the first time or after leaving corporate, to scaling responsibly, managing teams, building visibility, getting press, and creating sustainable growth. Topics include leadership development, confidence at work, business strategy, marketing strategies and tactics, company messaging, community building, and showing up confidently.

There’s no fluff. No gatekeeping. Just real insight, shared perspective, and practical wisdom, because building businesses is better when women learn from each other.

From Dream to Reality: A Place for Us All to Take a Deep Breath, with Heidi Zimmer, Founder of Wild Rice Retreat May 30, 2023
    Show notes

“Stay really grounded. Starting a business can be scary. You have to act boldly, but you have to do it with your feet firmly planted on the ground,” shares Heidi Zimmer, founder of Wild Rice Retreat. When Heidi had the first seed of an idea for her wellness retreat, many people discouraged her and told her that it would never work in the Midwest. Instead of letting naysayers deter her, she went on to raise $2 million through fundraising from 100% women investors, bringing her dream to life by founding the Midwest’s first all inclusive, adults-only wellness retreat right along Lake Superior. Since then, Wild Rice Retreat has received acclaim as a top destination retreat center in Condé Nast, Forbes, Harper’s Bazaar, Travel + Leisure, and Food & Wine.

    Today’s top takeaways:

    • Utilize the power of word of mouth, repeat customers, and partnerships to get people to talk about your business.
    • Stay really rooted in your decision making, always coming back to your original intention.

    Quotes

    • “Stay really rooted in your decision making, always coming back to your original intention.” (43:17-43:42 | Heidi)
    • “Figure out, if you have a seed of an idea, how are you going to grow it into a garden? You do that by not being afraid of how you are going to talk about it.” (43:52-44:04 | Heidi)
    • “Stay really grounded. Starting a business can be scary. You have to act boldly, but you have to do it with your feet firmly planted on the ground. Make sure you’re coming at that conversation at that moment from a place of being rested and grounded.” (44:33-45:10 | Heidi)

MAYhem Update: Sally Mueller Changes the Conversation Surrounding Menopause with Womaness May 25, 2023
    Show notes

When I first introduced you to Sally Mueller in the Spring of 2022, her company, Womaness was just ramping up. But, in addition to changing the conversation around menopause, according to a recent article in Women’s Wear Daily, Womaness Founders Sally Mueller and Michelle Jacobs set out to start their brand’s third fundraise a bit differently. They’re working with three LA based investors—Carol Cheng, Annie Belanger and Ellen Chen to form a special purpose vehicle. By doing this, women of all ages and investor experience were able to come to the cap table with checks ranging from $5,000 to $50,000—ultimately raising Womaness $1MM—and the brand is still raising.

Womaness aims to create a community full of inspired women who embrace menopositvity. This is a story I love because it is one rooted in what I believe is a brand’s greatest asset—their community.

Growing An Audience: Peloton's Jenn Sherman Takes on Instagram May 18, 2023
    Show notes

“I've now realized not everything you post is going to be like you knocked it out of the park, but it doesn't matter,” shares Jenn Sherman, Peloton’s OG fitness instructor. When Jenn was last on Dear FoundHer, Lindsay issued several Instagram challenges to help her accomplish one of her biggest goals: growing an audience on social media and boosting engagement. After applying Lindsay’s simple marketing tips for social media and conquering her imposter syndrome, Jenn has seen improvements in every metric for her Instagram account. Although she still struggles a bit with consistency, she is now building content creation time into her work schedule each week.

Any female founder who is focused on growing an audience and promoting your business can relate to this marketing challenge and can benefit from Lindsay's simple marketing tips.

    Today’s top takeaways:

    • Growing an audience on Instagram can’t be a chore. It has to be fun.
    • It doesn’t matter if you knock it out of the park every time.
    • Your relationship with any social media platform will ebb and flow. But the more you create content, the more you practice, the more it will stay top of mind and the better you will get at it.

Believing that women deserve more, not just in their hair color but in their lives, she founded the company in 2013, naming it after her daughter.
