    Show notes

EPISODE 40 - Clark, Hyung, and John record their longest podcast show to mark the 40th episode by first talking about the record-breaking sale of the Kobe Bryant PMG non-rookie card. Then they dissect the release of 2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball and go over the various pros (plenty of Wander Franco cards to chase plus new Home Field Advantage case hits) and cons (crazy print runs suspected), plus they discuss the greater implications for sports cards collecting if manufacturers continue to print more as well as potential solutions to prevent from entering Junk Wax Era 2.0.

The guys also answer three listener questions submitted through the podcast's Instagram page at @cardstothemoon. One question is why are PSA gem mint cards valued much higher currently than other gem mint cards from BGS or SGC. They also answer a card-flipping strategy question and end with a discussion on NFT sports cards.

The show ends off with its regular weekly segment, Pick One – Hot Takes Edition, where they each give two hobby hot takes and decide which is more likely to happen. The Pick One pairs for this episode include: Which is the better investment: Kobe Bryant PMG Green /10 vs. Kobe Bryant Topps Chrome Refractor Black Label; With the pandemic winding down, will we see a new boom in the hobby vs. or experience a bit more pain in the hobby; Wander Franco 1st Bowman Chrome autograph card will be worth more than Vladimir Guerrero 1st Bowman Chrome autograph card by the end of the season vs. Wander Franco 1st Bowman Chrome autograph card will be worth less than Bobby Witt Jr. 1st Bowman Chrome autograph card by the end of the season.

    Show notes

EPISODE 39 - Clark, Hyung, and John answer another question from a podcast listener in this episode – Is it a better investment to buy a player's non-rookie low-numbered, autograph cards at a low price vs. paying a premium for the player's rookie card? The guys weigh in with their thoughts during the Hobby Headlines segment on which factors to consider if you're investing in a second or third-year card. But off the top of the show, Hyung briefly talks about why he opened up his online shop at https://ysportscards.shop where you can directly buy his slabbed sports cards (as well as go on eBay for daily auctions).

Clark, Hyung, and John then play Fast Five where they choose whether they would buy, hold, or sell on five players' sports cards. This week's list includes three football players who just played in the Super Bowl (Joe Burrow, Matthew Stafford, Cooper Kupp) as well as two MLB players coming off of injury seasons (Ronald Acuna Jr. and Mike Trout).

The show ends off with its regular weekly segment, Pick One, where they debate which card they would rather invest in. Show notes

Which Real World News Can Impact Sports Card Values (ie. Hall of Fame Induction; Docuseries)?; John's Top 10 List of Vintage + Modern Hockey Cards to Invest In; Making Wrong Super Bowl Picks Again Feb 01, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 36 - Having recorded a week earlier before the air date, Clark, Hyung and John took the risk in guessing which team would make it to the Super Bowl – all of them were dead wrong about one of their picks. But they still had fun predicting what would happen to the rookie card value of each of the four QBs if they made it to football's biggest game. For this week's Hobby Headlines, the guys discussed what real world news could impact the value of sports cards in light of the recent Baseball Hall of Fame induction news. For example, does entering the Hall guarantee a nice bump in card value for that player? How about having a docuseries (ie. Drive to Survive) air on TV? Would that catapult prices of certain F1 drivers because of the success of the show? Or would major sporting events like the Olympics or the World Cup be enough for certain cards to gain value because the athlete is participating in the aforementioned events?

John introduces a new segment to the show called "Hockey Highlights" where he breaks down his Top 5 list of vintage hockey cards to invest in as well as Top 5 list of modern hockey cards to invest in. Do you agree with either of his lists or did he omit a key player?

And as usual, the guys end the show with the weekly Pick One segment – the Hot Takes edition. This week's Pick One pairs are: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will hit 50 home runs vs. Fernando Tatis Jr. will hit 50 home runs; Joe Burrow cards will go to the moon if he wins the Super Bowl vs. Ja Morant card will go to the moon if he win the NBA Championships; Connor McDavid rookie card values will surpass Wayne Gretzky's one day vs. Patrick Mahomes rookie card values will surpass Tom Brady's one day.

Is Wander Franco's Flagship Rookie Really in 2021 Bowman's Best?; Making Super Bowl Picks; Plus Is Topps Dynasty Super Underrated? Jan 18, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 34 - Clark, Hyung, and John get into the contentious debate of which Wander Franco rookie card is his flagship rookie card. Is it in the 2021 Bowman's Best set due to a simple change in how prospects within that set are numbered (we explain in the show)? But off the top, the guys make their Super Bowl picks last week before the playoffs began (and one pick is already "dead wrong.") They end the show with the regular Pick One segment (the Hot Takes edition) by giving two hobby hot takes and then debating which one is more likely to happen. This week's Pick One pairs include: Foresnic Card Grading (FCG) becomes the next respected grading company to fill the void of BGS vs. SGC gold label passes BGS 10 pristine (not black label) in terms of pricing; The hobby will accept the 2021 Bowman's Best Wander Franco as his true first major league rookie card vs. the hobby will accept Topps Dynasty as the "Flawless/NT" of baseball; Lebron James Topps Chrome Rookie Card (PSA 10) will hit sub-$10K in value vs. Luka Doncic Panini Silver Prizm (PSA 10) will hit sub-$2K.

    Show notes

EPISODE 33 - The whole gang is back for this first full episode of 2022 and the guys, Clark, Hyung, and John give more hobby predictions for 2022 with some hot takes ranging from relic cards making a huge comeback to Fanatics not done buying out companies this year. But they kick off the show debating if the recent sale of the Lebron James 2020 Panini Prizm Gold Refractor (Kobe Bryant dunk tribute card) graded PSA 9 for more than $200K is insane or actually reasonable. Then they end the show with the regular Pick One segment by pitting two cards against each other and debating which one they'd rather invest in. This week's Pick One pairs include: Fernando Tatis Rainbow Foil Rookie Card vs. Vladimir Guerrero Topps Chrome Xfractor Card; Juan Soto 1st Bowman Chrome Base Autograph Card vs. Lewis Hamilton Topps Chrome Refractor PSA 10; Luka Doncic Silver Prizm Rookie Card PSA 10 vs. Luka Doncic Select Light Blue /299 PSA 10.

BONUS EPISODE: Fanatics Buys Out Topps – What Happens Next In The Hobby? Jan 06, 2022
    Show notes

BONUS EPISODE 32: Clark and Hyung take a deeper dive into the massive news that Fanatics bought out Topps for a reported $500M-plus. What does that mean for the hobby exactly? Was the $500M too much or a steal to acquire Topps? Is Panini America the next acquisition target for Fanatics? Any concern about a Fanatics monopoly and what that might mean for the card market? Are there any legitimate competitors to Fanatics now or in the future? We tackle these questions head on in this episode.

MINI-EPISODE 31: Yes, it's a mini-episode because, unfortunately, we ran into some technical audio issues late in the editing process. So we cut out that segment of the show to play for you (even with the bad audio) our reasoning on why this was likely to happen – maybe not in the first week of the new year though.

We hope you take a quick listen. For those who are curious to hear about our other predictions we think might happen in the sports card world this year, we'll transcribe the unaired episode and put it up on fivecardguys.com
