    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

Join Ontario’s 24th premier Dalton McGuinty for an intimate evening of cocktails and conversation with CTV’s Canada AM cohostMarci Ien, as he discusses his life in politics and leadership lessons learned in a special advance launch of his new book, Making a Difference. As premier, McGuinty implemented an ambitious program of progressive policies that improved publicly-funded schools, combated climate change and transformed Ontario to better compete in the global economy. Throughout his journey, McGuinty has never lost his idealism. He continues to see public service as a noble, honourable profession and in Making a Difference offers ten leadership guideposts for anyone aspiring to principled leadership in the twenty-first century; lessons learned from looking back at a long and distinguished career. Dalton McGuinty served as premier from 2003 to 2013 — the first Liberal to serve three successive terms as premier of the province in over a century. He is now the Special Advisor to the President of Desire2Learn, an Ontario education technology company, and he recently joined the School of Public Policy and Governance at the University of Toronto as a Senior Fellow.

    Henri-Paul Rousseau Nov 19, 2015
    Show notes

Not a day passes without a comment in the media about the high fees that financial institutions charge to Canadians. Much criticized are the fees charged for managing individual savings, particularly in the case of mutual funds. Explanations from the industry that such fees help cover the cost of advice are met with skepticism. Some academic research seems to support these assertions. The research purports to show that financial professionals cannot, by definition, systematically beat the market; and that when they do, any gain made for their clients is eaten up by the fees that those professionals charge. Yet, on the other hand, it is a fact that almost two thirds of Canadian personal financial wealth is managed with advice by professionals, and that a good third of Canadian households of all income levels use financial advice. These apparent contradictions raise the question of the value of financial advice. Henri-Paul Rousseau will address this question at this joint conference of the Canadian Club and of the Club canadien de Toronto.
