    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

A Balanced Plan to Build Ontario Up for Everyone

The Honourable Kathleen Wynne Dec 13, 2016
    Show notes

In an uncertain global economy, Ontario businesses are creating tens of thousands of good, new jobs — the most of any province over the past year. Ontario is investing record amounts to build transit, hospitals and schools, leading the way to improved retirement security, making postsecondary tuition free for tens of thousands of students, tackling climate change and balancing the provincial budget. Join us on December 13 to hear Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne describe her balanced plan to build Ontario up for everyone and talk about how, as we build the next Ontario, there has never been a more important time to build an inclusive and fair economy. Kathleen Wynne is Ontario’s 25th Premier. Since taking office in February 2013, some of Premier Wynne’s accomplishments include the largest infrastructure investment in Ontario’s history and completing the single-largest climate change initiative in North America by eliminating coal-fired electricity generation in the province. She also introduced a ground-breaking plan to stop sexual violence and harassment. Premier Wynne’s economic plan for Ontario builds on her number-one priority: growing the economy and creating jobs. Her four-part plan invests in talent and skills, including helping more people get and create the jobs of the future by expanding access to high-quality college and university education. In addition to infrastructure investments in roads, bridges, transit, schools and hospitals, her plan is investing in a low-carbon economy driven by innovative, high-growth, export-oriented businesses. The plan is also helping working Ontarians achieve a more secure retirement. Premier Wynne serves as Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs. During her first year as Premier, she also served as Minister of Agriculture and Food. Prior to becoming Premier, she served as Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs, Minister of Transportation and Minister of Education. First elected to the Ontario Legislature in 2003 as the MPP for Don Valley West, Premier Wynne was re-elected in 2007, 2011 and 2014. She became the leader of the Ontario Liberal Party in January 2013. On June 12, 2014 Premier Wynne’s government was re-elected with a majority mandate. Before becoming an MPP, Premier Wynne served as a trustee on the Toronto District School Board. Prior to that, she led citizens’ groups in a number of grassroots community projects and played a major role as an organizer and facilitator. Premier Wynne has lived with her partner, Jane, in North Toronto for more than 25 years. She has three children and three grandchildren.

Canada is the world’s breadbasket – abundant in both farmland and wealth – and yet 4,000,000 Canadians and 1 in 6 children don’t have food security. It’s time to shine a brighter light on this national issue and spur innovation, policy solutions and broader collaboration. On December 12th, Michael McCain, President and CEO of Maple Leaf Foods, will discuss the daunting issue of food security and start a new conversation to address the challenge, including the launch of the new Maple Leaf Foods Centre for Action on Food Security. Michael H. McCain is President and Chief Executive Officer of Maple Leaf Foods, one of Canada’s flagship food companies. Born in Florenceville, New Brunswick, he has devoted his career to the food industry. He joined Maple Leaf Foods in 1995. The nature of Canada’s—and indeed the world’s—economy is changing, moving toward knowledge-intensive activities and away from former pillars such as manufacturing. Knowledge is now recognized as the driver of productivity and economic growth, leading to a new focus on the role of information, technology and learning. Air connectivity is a necessary prerequisite for any thriving economy based on information sharing and knowledge transfer. As such, airports and air carriers have a critical role to play in our nation’s prosperity. Join moderator Amber Kanwar (anchor and reporter for Business Day AM and The Disruptors), along with Benjamin Smith (President, Passenger Airlines at Air Canada) and Howard Eng (President and CEO of Toronto Pearson International Airport), as they discuss Canada’s changing economic landscape, the vital role that air connectivity plays as an economic engine and how we can move forward together to ensure continued prosperity for the region, the province and the country at large.
