    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    With 2016 behind us, Victor Dodig will reflect on where Canada finds itself in 2017. In his speech he will explore how supporting trade and innovation will help increase productivity and maximize growth in Canada’s current economic climate. This event is part of our Global Leaders Series. Victor Dodig was named President and CEO of the CIBC group of companies in September 2014, following his appointment as Group Head of Wealth Management in 2011. Under his tenure, Victor has helped usher in a new era for the bank, positioning CIBC as a strong, innovative, and relationship-oriented financial institution with a Return on Equity among the highest of its peers globally. Victor brings more than 20 years of extensive business and banking experience, having also led several businesses with UBS and Merrill Lynch in Canada and internationally. He was also a management consultant with McKinsey & Company. In addition to CIBC, Victor also serves on the board of the C.D. Howe Institute and the ROM Board of Governors, and is founding Chair of the 30% Club Canada. An alumnus of St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto and a Harvard Business School graduate, Victor is a past recipient of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40TM award. He resides in Toronto with his wife Maureen and their four teenage children.

    Unlocking Canada’s Potential: Supporting Trade and Innovation to Maximize Economic Growth

    Please join us on February 15th as Éric Martel discusses how Hydro-Québec’s clean and renewable electricity contributes to creating a low-carbon economy and plays a major role in the decarbonization of the power sector. He will also address Hydro-Québec’s commercialization of its expertise and innovations on world markets, and their commitment to “work better, set new sights and build the future.” Éric Martel took office as President and Chief Executive Officer of Hydro-Québec in July 2015. In this capacity, he is responsible for the company’s strategic objectives. Mr. Martel immediately set out four priorities for Hydro-Québec: proactive communication, sustained growth of the company’s activities, and improving customer service and productivity. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Martel worked at Bombardier from 2002 to 2015. He held several senior management positions, including that of President, Bombardier Business Aircraft, where he managed some 12,000 employees throughout the world. He also served as President, Customer Services and Specialized and Amphibious Aircraft. Under his leadership, the Customer Services team expanded its international footprint, generating significant and sustained growth in revenue as well as improving customer satisfaction survey results. He also headed several operational activities. During his career at Bombardier, Mr. Martel succeeded in implementing a solid quality culture throughout the organization, particularly in the course of his duties as Vice President, Quality, Achieving Excellence System and Transformation. Before joining Bombardier, Mr. Martel worked for various high-profile international companies in the aerospace manufacturing sector, such as Pratt & Whitney and Rolls Royce, as well as for Procter & Gamble and Kraft Foods. Éric Martel holds a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (1991) from Université Laval. He has been actively involved in Centraide of Greater Montréal since the early 2000s.

    Please join us on February 8th, as President and CEO of Halifax-based Emera Inc., Chris Huskilson discusses Emera as a leader in the energy sector with a focus on clean, renewable sources of energy. This event is part of our Global Leaders Series. Chris began his career with Nova Scotia Power in 1980. He became Chief Operating Officer of Emera and Nova Scotia Power in 2003 followed by President and Chief Executive Officer of Emera in 2004.Chris is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia. He serves on many for-profit and not-for-profit Boards of Directors. He is Past-Chair of the Greater Halifax Partnership, the Energy Council of Canada and the Canadian Electricity Association. Chris holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and a Master of Science in Engineering from the University of New Brunswick. Chris lives in Wellington, Nova Scotia.

    Join us on January 24th as The Honourable Kevin Flynn, Ontario’s Minister of Labour, describes what the government is doing to build an inclusive and fair province, and outlines why 2017 is shaping up to be a landmark year. This event is part of our Ontario 2016-2017 Series. The Hon. Kevin Flynn was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 2003 as MPP for Oakville. He was re-elected in 2007, 2011 and 2014. As Minister of Labour, a post he has held since 2014, he has made health and safety, and fairness in the workplace major components of his mandate/ Minister Flynn has extended workplace protections, pushed for more fairness for vulnerable workers, promoted better training, increased workplace inspections, and improved the minimum wage by tying it to the rate of inflation. Prior to his election in 2003, he owned a successful business, while serving as an Oakville and Halton Regional councillor for more than 18 years. Outside of politics, he has always been active in his community, taking up environmental causes, acting as president of the Children’s Aid Society, being a mentor in the Big Brothers program, and a coach of minor sports. With an MBA from Athabasca University, Minister Flynn also understands bottom lines, the needs of small business, and the realities of operating a business in a changing and evolving economic climate. Prior to being named the Minister of Labour, he served as Parliamentary Assistant to the Ministers of Infrastructure; Transportation; Training, Colleges and Universities; Education; Environment; Energy; Democratic Renewal; and Labour. He also chaired the influential Standing Committee on Mental Health and Addictions.
