    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    Join Bloomberg’s Amanda Lang for a conversation with Sam Sebastian, VP and Managing Director of Google Canada. A self-described ‘New Canadian’, Sebastian will share his observations and recommendations on innovation, risk taking and how – on the cusp of its 150th birthday – Canada is positioned to seize this historic moment. Sam Sebastian is responsible for Google’s Canadian operation. His mission is to lead Google in earning the love of Canadian users, advertisers, and partners by helping them to get the most out of the web. Google has nearly 1,000 employees in Canada throughout offices in Toronto, Kitchener, Montreal and Ottawa and has been awarded the #1 Best Place to Work in Canada (Great Places to Work Institute) six years in a row and recognized as the most influential brand in Canada (Marketing Magazine) the last four years. Sebastian joined Google in 2006 in Chicago and held a variety of executive level roles in the U.S. Prior to Google, he was a General Manager and SVP at a large online classified business, Classified Ventures, and started his career at Arthur Andersen as an accountant and consultant. Sebastian is a member of the Business Council of Canada and a Director on several Boards including Tennis Canada and Bridgit, a Kitchener-Waterloo startup. Sebastian graduated from The Ohio State University and holds an MBA from Northwestern’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management. He lives in the Toronto area with his wife and two children.

    The largest investor-owned electric and gas utility in Canada is now a transmission and distribution leader in North America with $47 billion in assets in 17 locations in Canada, the United States and the Caribbean. Join President and CEO Barry Perry on March 2, 2017 as part of our Global Leaders Series as he discusses the growth of Fortis from a small utility in Newfoundland and Labrador to among the top 15 publicly traded utilities in North America (ranked by enterprise value) with over 8,000 employees serving 3.2 million customers. Mr. Perry will also address the critical role which leading Canadian organizations play in driving Canada’s future prosperity and competitiveness. Mr. Perry’s career with the Fortis Group spans nearly 20 years. He was previously Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer of the Corporation. Mr. Perry joined the Fortis Group in 2000 as Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer of Newfoundland Power. He was also Vice President and Treasurer with a global forest products company and Corporate Controller with a large crude oil refinery. Mr. Perry earned a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from Memorial University of Newfoundland and is a member of the Association of Chartered Professional Accountants of Newfoundland and Labrador. He serves on the Boards of FortisBC, UNS Energy and ITC Holdings Corp., all Fortis utilities.

    Join Don Guloien and Bruce Sellery for a discussion of the massive growth opportunity in Asia, as well as the innovation, disruption and transformation of the financial services industry. This event is part of our Global Leaders Series. Donald Guloien is President and Chief Executive Officer of Manulife. A 35-year company veteran, he is a member of the Board of Directors and Chair of the Company’s Executive Committee. Mr. Guloien is a Director of the Geneva Association, Vice Chairman of the Mayor of Shanghai’s International Business Leaders’ Advisory Council, a member of the Board of the Business Council of Canada, the Immediate Past Chair and a Director of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association, a Trustee of The Hospital for Sick Children, a Governor of Branksome Hall and a member of the Campaign Cabinet for United Way. He is also a member of the Ticker Club, the World Presidents’ Organization, and has had a life-long involvement with the University of Toronto. Mr. Guloien has been named International Business Executive of the Year by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, awarded The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal, and received the Arbor Award for his contributions to the University of Toronto in various leadership capacities. He was ranked among the Highest Rated CEOs in Canada in Glassdoor.com’s 2015 and 2016 Employees’ Choice Awards, based on assessments by current and past employees. Before being appointed to his current role in 2009, Mr. Guloien served as Chief Investment Officer, where he was recognized as a leading global investment executive. He was responsible for Manulife’s worldwide investment operations, and led the significant growth of Manulife Asset Management, a global leader in wealth management services, including retail mutual funds, pension funds, and endowments. During that period, he also led the integration of Manulife’s investment operations with those of John Hancock in 2004, creating one of the strongest global investment management franchises in the industry. Mr. Guloien has wide-ranging international experience. In his investment role he was responsible for Manulife’s global investment operations in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and Asia. In June 2007, his portfolio was expanded to include the company’s Asian Insurance and Wealth Management operations representing Japan, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and Macau. From 1994 to 2001, he led Manulife’s Business Development unit, spearheading a number of key acquisitions, divestitures and strategic initiatives, including: the merger of Manulife with North American Life Assurance Company; the sale of Manulife’s U.K. business; Manulife’s conversion from a mutual life insurance company to a publicly traded stock company; and Manulife’s entry into Japan. Mr. Guloien joined Manulife in 1981 as a research analyst and quickly moved through several leadership roles in both the Canadian and U.S. Divisions. In 1990, he became Vice President, US Individual Business, where he was responsible for the operations of the Company’s individual insurance and annuity business in the United States. Mr. Guloien’s involvement at the University of Toronto includes being a current member of the Campaign Cabinet, and a former membership in the Governing Council, the Executive Committee and Business Affairs Committee of the Governing Council, the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Budget, the Dean’s Advisory Committee for the School of Graduate Studies, the Hart House Board of Stewards, and the Campaign Cabinet for the Rotman School. Former board memberships include the Children’s Aid Foundation, ThinkFirst Foundation of Canada and LIMRA International. Mr. Guloien holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto. He is married and has two children.

    On Wednesday, February 22nd, The Canadian Club of Toronto is proud to recognize one of this country’s most distinguished Canadians, Bonnie Brooks, with its 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award – an award that celebrates the lifelong efforts and leadership of extraordinary Canadians. Ms. Brooks has made many contributions over the years, through her leadership in business and philanthropy. Please join us as we celebrate her accomplishments and hear from her as she shares her insights on effective leadership and its ability to turn around and shape an organization. Bonnie Brooks is current Chair of the LCBO. From 2014 – January 2017 she was the Vice Chair of Hudson’s Bay Company, the world’s oldest continuously operating company, which owns and operates Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord and Taylor (USA), Kaufhof (Germany), and Hudson’s Bay (Canada) department stores. Bonnie has more than 30 years of global executive leadership in retail, having led three major department store turnarounds internationally. From 1997 to 2008, Bonnie was based in Hong Kong with Lane Crawford Group, serving as an executive officer, including as President of the Lane Crawford Group, with more than 500 stores in Asia. Prior to that, she spent over a decade at Holt Renfrew in roles that included Executive Vice President of the company. She returned to Canada in 2008 to join Hudson’s Bay as CEO and President where she spearheaded the turnaround of the company and increased sales and profits annually. From 2012 – 2014 she was President of Hudson’s Bay Company responsible for both Hudson’s Bay and Lord and Taylor department stores USA. Bonnie has served as a director on leading public company boards since 2009. Currently, she is a Director of Abercrombie & Fitch (USA based global retailer); Rogers Communications Inc.; Chico’s FAS (USA based international retailer); and is a Trustee of Riocan, a Canadian-based Real Estate Investment Trust. Bonnie holds a Masters of Business Administration from the Richard Ivey School of Business, Western University, and two honorary doctorate degrees – an LLD from Guelph University and DCL from St. Mary’s University. The Prime Minister of Canada awarded her the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for her work with the Canadian Olympic Committee in 2013. She was the first woman to receive the prestigious Ivey Business Leader of the Year, 2014 in Toronto.

    How can we make Canada’s Senate more independent, accountable and transparent, while reducing partisanship? Please join us as Senator Peter Harder, the Government Representative in the Senate, discusses the historic change taking place in the upper house and the challenge of renewing Canadians’ faith in the chamber of sober second thought. Senator Harder was appointed to the position of Government Representative to the Senate in March of last year. In his role, he is a strong advocate for reforming the upper chamber and is responsible for bringing forward government legislation to a chamber whose members are appointed under a new merit-based based system. Prior to his appointment, Senator Harder managed the transition to government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party in the wake of its 2015 election victory. Previously, Senator Harder spent 29 years in the federal public service, including 16 years as Deputy Minister, which included heading the departments of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Citizenship and Immigration, Industry, Solicitor General, Public Security, and the Treasury Board Secretariat. From 2003-2007, he served as Personal Representative of the Prime Minister (Sherpa) to three G8 Summits. He is an expert on Canada-China relations and was elected President of the China-Canada Business Council in 2008. He is active in his community and is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Public Service Outstanding Achievement Award and the United Way Community Builder Award. He chaired the United Church of Canada Foundation and the Commonwealth Games Foundation. He has provided his time to several organizations and is currently involved with the National Arts Centre, the Glenn Gould Foundation, the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, the Institute for Research on Public Policy, and the Advisory Committee on the Ukrainian Jewish Encounter. He was also the Royal Bank visiting Chair on Women and Work at Carleton University.
