    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    Canada is facing a demographic shift, our aging population and low birth rate will create challenges for our children and grand-children. Without a bold and thoughtful long-term plan, we risk passing on a stalling economy and a lower standard of living. The Century Initiative believes our future prosperity depends on significantly growing Canada’s population to 100 million people by 2100. But what are the risks of pursuing a population growth agenda? What might it mean for immigration policy and immigrant integration? And what are the implications for our cities, employment and educational opportunities if we do?     Join us for breakfast on March 1, when the Honourable Bill Morneau discusses the 2018 budget with Amanda Lang. The Honourable Bill Morneau, P.C., M.P. Bill Morneau is Canada’s Minister of Finance and has been in that role since 2015. He is the Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre, and an accomplished business leader. As Canada’s Minister of Finance, Bill has played a key role in shaping government policy and initiatives, including the introduction of the Canada Child Benefit, tax cuts for the middle class and small businesses, and the negotiation of an enhanced Canada Pension Plan. Between 1990 and 2015, Bill led the human resources firm, Morneau Shepell, through a period of transformational growth. Under his leadership, the firm grew from 200 employees to 4,000, becoming the largest firm of its kind in Canada, providing services to thousands of Canadian organizations and millions of Canadians. As a community leader, Bill has worked to support the arts, help at-risk-youth, and improve access to health care and education. Over a period of 20 years, he served as the chair of the board at St. Michael’s Hospital, Chair of Covenant House and Chair of the C.D. Howe Institute, and sat on many boards, including at the Loran Scholars Foundation and the Learning Partnership. Internationally, Bill founded a school for Somali and Sudanese girls in Kakuma Refugee Camp, a UNHCR camp in northern Kenya. Bill has co-authored a book, The Real Retirement, and previously served as pension investment advisor to the Ontario government. He holds a BA from Western University, an MSc (Econ) from the London School of Economics and an MBA from INSEAD. Amanda Lang Anchor, BNN Bloomberg Award-winning business journalist Amanda Lang has been covering business in North America for 20 years. Lang has been an anchor for Bloomberg Television Canada, as the host of Bloomberg North with Amanda Lang. Previously, Lang was CBC’s senior business correspondent, reporting for its flagship nightly news program, The National, and host of The Exchange with Amanda Lang, a daily business program airing on CBC News Network. For five years before that Lang hosted The Lang and O’Leary Exchange, with Kevin O’Leary. Prior to that the pair co-hosted SqueezePlay, on BNN, for 6 years. Lang studied Architecture at the University of Manitoba, before becoming a journalist. Her first job in journalism was for the Globe and Mail, and subsequently Lang joined the Financial Post newspaper, where she became the paper’s New York correspondent. In New York she made the leap to television, where she first was part of the team that launched BNN and before long wound up at CNN as a reporter and anchor. Lang is also a best-selling author. “The Power of Why,” (HarperCollins, October 2012) explores the connection between curiosity and success. “The Beauty of Discomfort” (HarperCollins, April 2017) examines how difficult change can be, and set out strategies for how to achieve it.
