    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

The Honourable Stephen McNeil May 23, 2018
    Show notes

Nova Scotia is on the move. Their population is up, unemployment is down and with 3 consecutive balanced budgets – they have money to invest and Nova Scotia is open for business. Join Canadian Club Toronto on May 23 when The Honourable Stephen McNeil joins us to discuss what’s on the horizon for Nova Scotia. Premier Stephen McNeil attributes his core values and strong commitment to public service to his large, close-knit family. Stephen is the 12th of 17 siblings who were born and raised in Nova Scotia’s beautiful Annapolis Valley. After graduating from the Nova Scotia Community College, he owned and operated a small business in Bridgetown for 18 years. Stephen’s inspiration to serve his community came from his late mother, Theresa, the first female sheriff in Canada. He first won the privilege of serving the people of Annapolis in the provincial legislature in 2003 and has been their MLA since. Stephen became leader of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party in 2007 and led his team to majority election wins in October 2013 and May 2017. As premier, he has led the province to stable financial ground, which has allowed government to make new investments in Nova Scotians’ priorities in health care, education, creating opportunities for young people, and more. Stephen’s vision for Nova Scotia is one of an inclusive, welcoming, innovative, and entrepreneurial province where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. Stephen lives with his wife Andrea in the house where he grew up in Upper Granville, Annapolis County. They have two grown children, Colleen and Jeffrey.

Tales from the Anchor Desk in the Trump Era

The Honourable Kathleen Wynne Apr 23, 2018
    Show notes

In advance of the 2018 Provincial Election, the Honourable Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario, will address the Canadian Club of Toronto. Kathleen Wynne is Ontario’s 25th Premier. Since taking office in 2013, Premier Wynne’s accomplishments include balancing the provincial budget for the first time in a decade, making record-breaking infrastructure investments in Ontario’s roads, schools, hospitals and transit systems, and securing a historic national deal to improve retirement security by enhancing the Canada Pension Plan. Premier Wynne’s plan for building Ontario up focuses on creating new opportunities for people and businesses, and ensuring a fairer, more secure future for everyone in the province. Under her leadership, as Ontario has regained its place as the economic engine of Canada, the Premier has worked to ensure the benefits of growth are shared evenly. To this end, her government is making tuition free for hundreds of thousands of students, raising the minimum wage for workers and creating 100,000 new child care spaces. Earlier this year, Premier Wynne introduced a ground-breaking plan for the biggest expansion of Medicare in a generation. OHIP+ will provide free prescription medication for young people in the province, from birth until they turn 25. The Premier also received international attention for launching a basic income pilot project in three Ontario communities. At a time of global change and uncertainty, Premier Wynne is unwavering in her support for a fair and open society, and has increased her advocacy for free trade and open borders. She has led international business missions to countries including China, India, Mexico and the United States. To ensure the interests of Ontario’s workers and businesses are represented as NAFTA is renegotiated, Premier Wynne has increased her U.S. engagement, focusing on building partnerships and deepening ties with the U.S. states that rely on free trade with Canada. Premier Wynne was first elected as the Member of Provincial Parliament for Don Valley West in 2003, and has served as Minister for five departments and been re-elected three times. When her three children were still in school, she was motivated to run for office by her passion for publicly funded education and her desire to give every child in Ontario the best possible start. Before becoming an MPP, Premier Wynne served as a trustee on the Toronto District School Board. Prior to that, she led citizens’ groups in a number of grassroots community projects and played a major role as an organizer, facilitator and mediator. Premier Wynne grew up in Richmond Hill, where she learned to question the status quo at a young age. In high school, she joined with her friends to challenge the rule that prevented girls from wearing pants to school. She has lived with her partner, Jane, in North Toronto for more than 25 years. She has three children and three grandchildren.

In the era of #MeToo and #TimesUp, women are pressing for leadership and empowerment like never before. Ontario recently launched the first Women’s Economic Empowerment Strategy in Canada, and Part 2 of It’s Never Okay, A Gender Based Violence Strategy. Harinder Malhi, Ontario’s Minister of the Status of Women lays out a roadmap for women in Ontario – from breaking down barriers such as the gender wage gap, to ending violence and sexual harassment, and speaks to why, more than ever, strong leadership is important for women’s futures. Harinder Malhi was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 2014 as the MPP for Brampton-Springdale. Malhi currently serves as Minister of the Status of Women. She was previously Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, and before that Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues. She was a member of the Select Committee on Sexual Violence and Harassment. The committee’s mandate was to make recommendations on improving prevention strategies and the response to Ontarians who have experienced sexual violence and harassment. She was a school board trustee who represented Brampton wards 9 and 10 for the Peel District School Board for more than three years. Malhi has lived and worked in the Brampton area for nearly 20 years, and is actively involved in many community organizations. She was an administrator for summer camps and volunteers with municipal, provincial and federal organizations. She also supports non-profit organizations such as the Canadian-South Asians Supporting Independent Living Association (CSASIL) in Brampton, and collects donations for local shelters and food banks.
