    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    oin Canadian Club Toronto on June 1 when we host Alberta’s Minister of Jobs, Economy & Innovation, The Honourable Doug Schweitzer. Minister Schweitzer will be speaking on Alberta’s economic recovery and how the province plans to address growing and diversifying its economy as we move past the COVID-19 pandemic. The Minister will also promote the work being done to strengthen the foundations of Alberta’s existing sectors and expanding emerging industries, as well as highlight the economic synergies that exist between other province’s and how Alberta plans to attract investment dollars. Minister Schweitzer will be joined in conversation by Adrienne Batra, Editor in Chief of the Toronto Sun. Minister Doug Schweitzer was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta on April 16, 2019 as the MLA for Calgary-Elbow. He was then appointed as Alberta’s Minister of Justice and Solicitor General, where he made important progress tackling rural and organized crime, took measures to protect vulnerable Albertans from exploitation, and instituted a system of drug treatment courts to break the cycle of drug-related crime and advancing aspects of the fair deal panel report recommendations. On August 25, 2020, Minister Schweitzer was appointed as Alberta’s Minister of Jobs, Economy and Innovation, where he currently oversees the implementation of Alberta’s Recovery Plan, which focuses on strengthening Alberta’s workforce, diversifying the economy, maximizing government efficiency, and attracting investment to the province. Prior to the 2019 election, Minister Schweitzer was a partner at a leading Alberta law firm where his experience in restructuring and bankruptcy law offered valuable insights into policy that continues to have an real impact on Albertans. As a father of 2 young girls, Minister Schweitzer remains passionate about delivering on Alberta’s longstanding promise: that with hard work, no matter where you come from, you can succeed.

That’s why, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and whilst recovering from a life-threatening accident, John Ruffolo opened the doors on his newest venture with $500 million in secured investments. Join Canadian Club Toronto on May 27 as John Ruffolo, Founder and Managing Partner of Maverix Private Equity, sits down in conversation with General Partner of District Ventures Capital and star of Dragons’ Den, Arlene Dickinson, to discuss what pivoting looks like during the pandemic, and the importance of resiliency at every stage of a business, and life. John is the Founder and Managing Partner of Maverix Private Equity. John’s focus is on guiding the strategy of the firm, Chair of the Investment Committee and is deeply involved with sourcing and leading opportunities particularly within the technology industry. John Ruffolo was also the Founder of OMERS Ventures and the Co-founder and Vice Chair of the Council of Canadian Innovators. Over the course of John’s leadership as Chief Executive Officer, OMERS Ventures had invested over $500 million of capital in over 40 disruptive technology companies across North America, including growth investments in Shopify, Wattpad, Wave, Hootsuite, Rover, Desire 2 Learn, Hopper, DuckDuckGo, TouchBistro and League. During his tenure at OMERS, John also formed OMERS Platform Investments as its Executive Managing Director. He led investments in Purpose Financial, PointNorth Capital, District Ventures, OneEleven and ArcTern Ventures. Co-founded with Jim Balsillie, the Council of Canadian Innovators is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping highgrowth Canadian technology firms scale up globally. The Council is made up of CEOs from Canada’s most promising technology companies. The Council’s position is to promote, share, and collaborate with public policy leaders on key policy levers to optimize the growth of Canada’s innovation-based sector. John also currently sits on the boards of a number of leading innovative organizations including AI Partnerships Corp., engineering.com, Ether Capital, OneEleven, ArcTern Ventures, and Canopy Rivers. John has also previously served on the boards of Hootsuite, Wave, Desire 2 Learn, Purpose Financial, MMM Group, Continuum Residential REIT, Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE), Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), Communitech and Deloitte. In addition, John sits on the board of a number of not-for-profit organizations including the David Suzuki Foundation as Vice-Chair, the Royal Ontario Museum, Caldwell’s Top 40 Under 40 and The Dean’s Advisory Council for the Schulich School of Business. John was a Partner at Deloitte, as well as the Global Thought Leader, the Global Tax Leader and the Canadian Industry Leader for Deloitte’s Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) practice. He was also a member of the firm’s Tax and TMT Global Leadership teams and a member of Deloitte’s Board of Directors. Prior to Deloitte, John was a partner with Arthur Andersen LLP. In 2020, John became a Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario (FCPA). In 2018, John was honored with the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic which made him a 5th Class Knight. It is the highest-ranking honour of the Italian Republic and is awarded for “merit acquired by the nation” in the fields of literature, the arts, economy, public service, and social, philanthropic and humanitarian activities and for long and conspicuous service in civilian and military careers. John was recognized as Canada’s #1 of 100 Most Powerful Business People as selected by Canadian Business Magazine in 2014 (#3 in 2015). John was also selected as one of Toronto’s 50 Most Influential People by Toronto Life (#16 in 2015, #40 in 2016, #26 in 2017). John was awarded with the Outstanding Progress & Achievement Award by the Schulich School of Business at York University in 2014. This is awarded to a graduate who has demonstrated outstanding career

    Resiliency in Uncertain Times

    Join Canadian Club Toronto on May 20 as we welcome the Chairperson and CEO of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), Ian Scott. Mr. Scott will be joined in conversation with Shruti Shekar, reporter with Android Central, as they discuss how Internet services have become even more vital during the pandemic and how the CRTC is working to improve access for Canadians living in rural and remote communities. They will also discuss the CRTC’s efforts to promote more choice and affordable wireless services for Canadians, and how the CRTC responded to the new telemarketing and online scams that have emerged over the last year. As Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer, Ian Scott supervises and directs the work and staff of the Commission. He also chairs Commission meetings and participates in public hearings and consultations. Ian has over 25 years of policy and regulatory experience in broadcasting and telecommunications both in the public and private sectors. After working at the Competition Bureau, he joined the CRTC from 1990 to 1994, where he collaborated on the development of a framework for long-distance telephone service competition in Canada. Between 2007 and 2008, as part of the Executive Interchange Program, he was Senior Policy Advisor to the Chairman at the CRTC. Before rejoining the CRTC in 2017, Ian held various executive positions in the communications industry, including at Telesat Canada, Telus and Call-Net Enterprises, one of the first companies to offer competition in the Canadian long-distance market. He also provided leadership on broadcasting policy and regulatory issues as an executive at the Canadian Cable Television Association. Ian has served on various boards, including Women in Communications and Technology and Ski Quebec Alpin.

    The global pandemic has accelerated financial innovation, technological development and participation by retail investors, and has placed a spotlight on the role of capital markets in supporting a strong economic recovery, long-term growth with new investment opportunities. Join Canadian Club Toronto on May 19 as OSC Chair and CEO Grant Vingoe discusses the transformation underway at Canada’s largest capital markets regulator, the trends affecting the market and the challenges of balancing a shifting regulatory focus and a growing mandate. He will outline how the OSC is meeting these challenges, and how regulation must keep pace with the fast-evolving markets, needs of investors and entrepreneurs. After his remarks, Grant will be joined in conversation by BNN Bloomberg’s Amber Kanwar. Grant Vingoe is Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC), following over four years as Vice-Chair of the OSC. He is also Chair of the Policy Coordination Committee of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), the umbrella organization for securities commissions in Canada, and is a member of the board of directors of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO). He is also the Chair of the Joint Regulators Committee responsible for the CSA’s oversight for the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments. Grant is a senior leader and trusted adviser for regulatory agencies and, during his career as a partner in leading global law firms, for issuers and financial services clients. He is a seasoned adjudicator with cross-border expertise and deep knowledge of financial markets. Grant is a member of the board of Springboard Danse Montreal, a dance education not-for-profit, and is a member of the advisory board of Reach the World, a social studies and geography not-for-profit providing services to primary school children. Grant holds a J.D. from Toronto’s Osgoode Hall Law School and an LL.M. from the New York University School of Law. He was admitted to the bar in Ontario in 1983 and in New York in 1985.
