    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    In April 2022, Inuit and the Government of Canada adopted the federal Inuit Nunangat Policy in order to help create prosperity and improve wellbeing among Inuit. Join Canadian Club Toronto on June 1 for a conversation with National Inuit Leader Natan Obed to learn about how this transformational policy will support Inuit self-determination and improve federal policies, programs, services and initiatives that are intended to benefit Inuit. Natan Obed is the President of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami. He was first elected in 2015 and was acclaimed to his third consecutive term in 2021. He grew up in Nain, the northernmost community of Nunatsiavut (Northern Labrador). He graduated from Tufts University in 2001. President Obed is the national spokesperson for Inuit in Canada and also serves as Vice-President of Inuit Circumpolar Council-Canada. As ITK President, he implements the direction set out by Inuit Leadership from the four regions of Inuit Nunangat — the Inuvialuit Settlement Region of the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Nunavik and Nunatsiavut.

Canada has a chance to become a global leader in sustainable energy production and contribute significantly to minimizing global emissions. Join Canadian Club Toronto on May 18 to hear from Al Monaco, President and CEO of Enbridge Inc., in conversation with The Honourable Brian Tobin, Vice-Chair, BMO Financial Group on Canada’s role to advance the energy transition and contribute to energy security. Appointed as President, Chief Executive Officer and a Director of Enbridge in 2012, Al Monaco has led Enbridge through a period of unprecedented growth combined with a continued focus on safety, reliability and environmental protection that has positioned it as North America’s leading energy infrastructure company. Under Al’s leadership, Enbridge has focused on long-term sustainable growth while maintaining the company’s low-risk business model. In 2017, Enbridge completed the $37-billion acquisition of Spectra Energy, which diversified the company, accelerated its natural gas strategy and expanded its U.S. footprint. Enbridge has invested more than $60 billion in energy infrastructure projects over the last seven years, including Canada’s first export pipeline system to the U.S. Gulf Coast, and the company’s first international offshore wind project. Enbridge has prioritized sustainability by containing emissions from its operations and diversifying its asset base to reflect the global energy mix. Enbridge has developed an industry-leading approach to stakeholder and Indigenous engagement based on trust, collaboration and economic partnerships. Al is a strong advocate for building diverse and inclusive working environments and has signed Enbridge to Equal by 30, a pledge to support gender equality in the energy sector by 2030. Al is a champion of North America’s energy industry and its ability to become a global leader by supplying affordable, reliable and responsible energy to the world. He is a Director and member of the American Petroleum Institute Executive and Finance Committees; a Director and member of the Weyerhaeuser Board and its Compensation Committee; and a member of the U.S. National Petroleum Council, the Business Council of Canada, the Business Council of Alberta, and the Catalyst Canada Advisory Board. Al was the recipient of the Fraser Institute Founders Award (2019), and has been recognized as “Canadian Energy Person of the Year” (2017) and “Alberta Business Person of the Year” (2016) by the Energy Council of Canada and Alberta Venture, respectively. Al is a staunch supporter of the community, including the United Way and the annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer. Al and his wife Laurie live in Calgary and have three sons. Al earned a Master of Business Administration from the Haskayne School of Business (Finance) at the University of Calgary. He holds a CPA, CMA designation and is a member of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Alberta. He completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

    Quality journalism is under attack as never before, as part of disinformation campaigns which threaten democracies. Join Canadian Club Toronto on May 3, World Press Freedom Day, to hear from Catherine Tait, President and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada, in conversation with CBC journalist and radio personality Saroja Coelho to discuss the new threats to fact-based media in Canada and around the world, and how the public broadcaster is responding. Catherine Tait was appointed President and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada on April 3, 2018, for a five-year term. She began her mandate on July 3, 2018. Catherine is also the Chair of the Global Task Force for Public Media, an initiative of the Public Media Alliance launched in September 2019. As President and CEO, Catherine is responsible for overseeing the management of CBC/Radio-Canada to ensure that Canada’s national public broadcaster can deliver on the various aspects of its mandate and continue to offer Canadians a broad spectrum of high-quality programming that informs, enlightens and entertains, and that is created by, for and about Canadians. Prior to her appointment, Catherine co-founded New York-based Duopoly Inc, an independent film, television and digital content company, which she led as President from 2002 to 2018. She also co-founded iThentic, a digital content company, in 2006 and Hollywood Suite in 2010, a broadcasting company in Canada. Catherine was also previously the President and COO of Salter Street Films from 1997 to 2001. She has experience working for the Government of Canada as Director and Cultural Attaché with the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris, and as Manager of Policy and Planning for Telefilm Canada where her passion for Canadian film and television content was ignited. She’s been a member of a number of industry-specific boards including Comweb Group, DHX Media LTD, Hollywood Suite (which she co-founded), iThentic Inc, eOne Entertainment, CHUM Ltd, Aliant Inc, Rogers Mobile Film Fund and the Canadian Film and Television Production Association. Catherine holds a Diplôme d’Études Approfondies, Communications Theory from the University of Paris II Panthéon-Assas (1983), a Master of Science from Boston University’s School of Public Communication (1982) and a Bachelor of Arts (Hon) in Literature and Philosophy from the University of Toronto (1979). Catherine was named Playback’s Executive of the Year in 2019 and Woman of the Year 2021-2022 by Women in Communications and Technology.
