Collabcast with Jonathan Jay on Scaling and Buying Businesses Jan 27, 2020
    Show notes

This week sees a remarkably insightful collaborative episode in which Gavin is in conversation with Jonathan Jay of the Dealmaker's Academy, a specialist in helping seasoned business owners who have reached a certain level in their businesses, and who wish to make acquisitions that will expand the size of their companies.

Gavin and Jonathan have joined forces to discuss how successful acquisitions work, and the ideal process that should take place post-acquisition.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Most of the groundwork should be done beforehand when it comes to acquisitions. No one wants to walk into a newly acquired business and be faced with a barrage of surprises. Special attention should be paid to understanding the culture of the business.
    • They key to any smooth takeover is a period of transition; a handover that must be seen as a very positive experience for the company. It is a passing of the baton, instead of a “scorched earth” policy.
    • Staff worry when an acquisition takes place, and this is a natural feeling. Many will suspect that their livelihoods and positions are at risk. It is worth being extra communicative during this period. Remember that the workforce will sense that something is wrong if you are not telling them that everything is right.
    • If staff cuts are necessary, be honest and open from the beginning If the business needs to be downsized, then make sure staff are aware. Misleading at this point will lead to a loss of trust which can be almost impossible to regain.
    • Businesses can sometimes be handed over with outstanding debt attached. Jonathan advises that proper investigation should reveal any outstanding bills, and that these should be deducted from the purchase price when agreed.
    • Deal acquisition can be very addictive. A successful acquisition can provide a huge boost to confidence, as well as an affirmation of self-belief. Many who succeed find themselves eager to continue.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Most people see acquisitions as a negative thing. The first thing is to settle everyone down'

'The people can be your biggest asset or your biggest liability'

‘You fix all those things and it sends a very, very positive message'

‘You de-risk the transaction, that's the aim here'

    ‘You can't eliminate every eventuality'

    Susanna Hancock- ADHD, M&A & Me Jan 20, 2020
    Show notes

Susanna Hancock was diagnosed with a form of ADHD that means her attention to detail is reduced, but that her Hyper-Focus is enhanced. By focussing on the positive side of her condition, and employing her Hyper-Focus in the business world, Susanna has helped countless business owners to achieve realistic exit-strategies, meaning that their companies can operate successfully without them, leaving them free to retire or pursue other opportunities.

Gavin is joined by Susanna on this week's show to discuss her abilities, her mission to do good in the business world, the strategies you need to consider in order to create an effective future for yourself, and why inclusion is one of the top concerns, and missed opportunities in today's business world.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Early business experiences led Susanna to realise that there needs to be more inclusion in the corporate world. There's a huge talent pool that is being under-utilised.
    • Through interaction and education, Susanna came to realise that she does in fact suffer from an adult version of ADHD. The upshot was that she found herself in the very inclusion group she was trying to promote.
    • Susanna has turned her ADHD and Hyper-Focus to her advantage in the business world, using her specialised abilities to their fullest extent, and trying to some good by helping business owners to achieve realistic and swift exit strategies.
    • One of the great tragedies in business is a situation in which owners have not laid the foundations for a succession strategy. Sudden changes of circumstances and even unexpected illness can devastate businesses who haven't made effective contingency plans.
    • The further you plan ahead, the more prepared you will be in the event of any issues. Susanna advises making sure plans are in place for the following as a matter of priority:
      • Having the right staff in place
      • Build in effective second-tier management structures
      • Ensure that growth and accountability is well documented
    • You have to get past your own ego. Thriving businesses often make the best use of their team. Owners need to stand aside if someone else is more capable. This means that their business will fast become an entity of its own, totally self-reliant and able to organically grow.
    • Investors or potential business buyers will always be attracted to a business that is transparent, is people by a workforce that are happy and willing to work, and which has the potential to be even better. This can only be done by granting autonomy to the people you hire, and trusting them to fulfil their potential.
    • When considering your succession plan, you must always count yourself as an individual. What does your pension look like? What is the ideal exit? Do you wish to pursue other opportunities, or retire completely? Visualisation is the key to attainment.

    BEST MOMENTS

    Make 2020 A Defining Decade Jan 06, 2020
    Show notes

As we celebrate the start of a New Year and a New Decade everyone is talking about goal setting and business planning for 2020. Gavin brings those aspirations together and takes everything to a higher level in this episode asking where you will be in 10 years' time?

He shares how you can build a compelling vibrant vision in three key areas of your life: Health, Personal and Business casting yourself as the hero of your own compelling movie of what you desire your life to be like in 10 years' time.

When you shift your time horizon and thinking you can achieve more in less time and Gavin explains in-depth how milestones and creating a compelling vision are vital if you want to achieve more across all areas in your life.

Listen in to find out how to create the route map that will make sure you achieve everything you want and get to be the hero of your own journey.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Most of us overestimate what we can achieve in a year and underestimate what we can achieve in ten years.
    • Build a mental picture-what do you want your health to look like? What are your energy levels like?
    • If you can get your health right then you will have the energy, stamina, drive and ‘get up and go' to get everything else done.
    • Build a compelling vision for your business. The movie you create needs to be in vivid colour with you in the centre of it with powerful emotions.
    • The more time you can spend living in this vision the more you are programming your mind and bringing forward the clarity required to achieve it.
    • Build the compelling vision and imagery that will drive you forward every day
    • This vision is what you will return to when you are having a bad day when you are facing a challenge.
    • You must cast yourself as the central figure ‘the hero of your journey'
    • If you plan backwards from the amazing reality in ten years' time what are the milestones?
    • If you stand at the position of having already accomplished your goal and plan backwards you can make different calls on the things you know you will need to do.
    • The things we think are going to take many years can be achieved in fewer years if we have the right milestones in place.
    • Set goals for your milestones using MTO (minimum, target, outrageous) and challenge yourself to play the bigger game.
    • Focus on the big stuff that will really make a difference.
    • You have a huge opportunity to set your own horizons, so what can you achieve in the next ten years?
    • Make it a decade that counts, a defining decade not only for you but also for those closest to you.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Moving and exercise have a huge impact on both your physical well-being and your mental health'

‘Make yourself the victor, the hero of your compelling journey over the next ten years'

‘The 2020s are going to be a defining decade for me in helping shape the lives of my boys'

‘We love the story of the main character facing and overcoming the challenge'

Applying the Values Discipline Strategy Model to launching a new product Dec 30, 2019
    Show notes

This week's show is a very special affair. You're cordially invited to sit in on an invaluable conversation between Gavin and his special guest, Traci Cornelius, the host of hit podcast Women Rockin' Business, as they discuss the best ways in which Traci can maximise the launch of her new venture by using two steps of Gavin's six-step growth model, The Strategy Compass.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Gavin's six-stage model is The Strategy Compass, which is divided into purpose, mind-set, goals, strategy, capability and action and accountability
    • Traci's product is made to increase your visibility with confidence. The outcome she is hoping for is a feeling of being comfortably uncomfortable; to make people “camera ready”, and to increase the likelihood of their being able to deliver their company message effectively.
    • If people want to build and scale their businesses, then they need to be prepared to put themselves out there. If they are shy or lack confidence, then it's advisable to address the reasons at the root of this, so that they can make their voice heard effectively.
    • The Values Discipline states that if you truly want to create value with your product or service, there are three points to play on, but only one at a time:
      • Product Leadership
      • Operational Excellence
      • Customer Intimacy
    • Gavin's SCALE mnemonic:
      • S - Systems
      • C - Cash
      • A - Advance
      • L - Leadership and Culture
      • E - Effectiveness

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Traci Cornelius is a Speaker, Business Coach, Mindset Coach and mum to five Girls. Like many, Traci's story is not really a succinct one. It is long with many twists and turns (which is like business and life itself!).

"Many of the twists and turns have helped me to learn, to grow and to become a successful entrepreneur."

On a professional level, she runs many businesses. On a personal level, she is a Mum to five wonderful, adorable, courageous, independent and challenging girls.

“I discovered exactly where I had gone wrong in my previous businesses. Everything I had been through, the good the bad and the ugly started to come together into the best discovery of all the “5 Power Principles”

I implemented them, first in my business and then in others and so they then became the “5 Power Principles” that other people wanted to know about!”

    –Traci Cornelius
