    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • When Planning you need to reconnect with the vison what are you trying to achieve.
    • Once you know where you are going then the next question is how?
    • Instead of thinking incrementally you can look at where you want to be, then work backwards planning the steps you need to make to get to where you want to be
    • You can't have a big enough vision – I have a twenty-year vision, which is huge but every year I look at it then chunk up
    • Goals – set goals for all areas of life including relationship, business and emotions.
    • The goals are formed from what you want to achieve in each area
    • If you are not getting the results you need to change something
    • Change the things that will get you the outcome
    • Look at the environment your customers are working in and find out if their pain points and wants have changed because you may not be meeting their needs
    • You may have a range of products and it may be due to agile innovation that those products are no longer relevant because the world is moving more quickly
    • Even if you've had the best year ever you must re-evaluate because it doesn't mean the next year will be the same.
    • There are many lenses with which you can look at your business the most important thing is to match what the customer wants with what you can provide.
    • If you haven't got a good insight into your business then you need to seek external support to ensure you have the information required to plan well for the coming year.
    • There are key questions to ask  - What am I not seeing at this point that may cause me problems further along the line.
    • If you are a business of a certain scale there are more businesses out there than ever before If you are planning to sell, for private equity to be interested there is a threshold. A planning strategy you can include is one of possible merging with another business of a similar size to make yourself attractive to private equity investment when you are seeking a successful exit.

What if Socks could Change the World? Interview with Josh Turner Founder of Stand4Socks, Ethical Socks Brand & Business for Good Nov 11, 2019
    Show notes

‘Socks are one of the few things you start and end your day with'

Gavin is with Josh Turner Founder of Stand4Socks a company founded on the statement ‘What if socks could change the World?

Most of us wear socks, so if socks could have a positive impact surely they can change the world. This business for good began with global goals but has found its true calling much closer to home supporting the homeless across the country with its ‘buy one pair, give one pair'

The journey has been interesting and Gavin and Josh discuss how the business has been shaped and why simplicity is key for scale and growth in this fascinating interview about starting an ethical business for good.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    A changing business

It's vital to value your time. Having fulfilment pushed us to find more volume because it's a system that is discounted by the volume purchased.

We outsourced digital marketing because it's a space that is moving rapidly and it requires specialist knowledge that's continually updated.

Advertising platforms and B to B sales

Instagram is great for first impressions and getting engagement with the brand alongside Facebook for possible conversion.

Often we have 2 or 3 impressions before we gain engagement.

The focus is now influencers, collaborations and partnerships.

As we've grown in scale, retail has come to us for specific projects.

The majority have different propositions but have come to us because of our buy one give one and ethical stance.

For a big brand to get an ethical branded sock in someone's sock drawer rather than something disposable like a cupcake or bottle of wine is a big deal and a great return on investment along with a great emotional connection.

We make the most comfortable socks possible without sacrificing style and ethics

and for every pair, we sell, donate a pair to the homeless.

    Being a business for good

We started with global goals initially 8, with a different sock design for each of them, we were supporting many causes in little ways.

Socks are cherished items at homeless shelters because it's a wear through item for most of us.

The homeless do more walking daily than the average person so socks are really important.

It began with a Christmas design and resonated massively with customers.

Today it's about 85% of our range and it's what we are passionate about. We now support the homeless nationally and also offer apprenticeships for the homeless within our business.

We are always asking ‘where can we have more social impact in our business?'

    BEST MOMENTS

‘We did our homework and work with a great digital company who are invested in our mission'

‘We've had to learn to be able to support the homeless community in the way they wanted and that was useful for them'

‘We are focused on maximising customer lifetime value'

‘We've got a great supply chain and we are now leveraging it to expand to a wider audience'

Cate Walter: How to Get Flexible Working to Work For Your Business & For Your Employees Nov 04, 2019
    Show notes

‘Where flexible working is implemented well and is successful the end result is always fulfilled engaged motivated staff'

Gavin is in conversation with Cate Walter and in this episode they talk about how and why creating a flexible working culture in high growth businesses benefits everyone involved.

Cate Walter is a director of Rhino Safety, a multi-award-winning Health, Safety, Fire Risk and Environmental Consultancy based in Cheshire.

With a background in Employment Law and HR Cate is passionate about the positive impact of flexible working and shares her expertise and experience of working with a range of companies to grow successful flexible working strategies. She also reflects on implementing flexible working at Rhino from the very start and the how as a high growth business it is a

    A culture that benefits everyone.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Creating flexible working in high growth businesses is hugely positive and beneficial for both the business and the people who work within it.

What are the challenges in high growth businesses?

Flexible working is very much seen in the realms of women with no consideration of any other groups needing or wanting flexible working.

There is a fear that if one person is working flexibly it would open the floodgates for everyone and that it then isn't possible to operate a business effectively day to day.

The legislation is a massive part of the problem it is extremely well-intentioned and very poorly executed.

It makes what should be a relatively simple exercise into something very complicated and it's that which creates the fear.

How can flexible working be effectively and successfully implemented?

There is a myriad of ways for people to work flexibly.

All of our team members have full flexibility to decide on their hours.

Everybody has core working hours – this is used as a guide to the number of hours we've agreed is needed to fulfil the work commitments.

We count the work not the hours, It's all about the outcomes.

Where flexible working is implemented well and is successful the end result is always fulfilled engaged motivated staff.

Where this happens, people are more likely to be flexible in return towards the company.

It has to be based on a relationship of reciprocity, mutual respect and trust.

It is key that management believes in flexible working as a strategy.

Flexible working is all about culture and in our company flexible working is there for your life, so you can have the lifestyle you want alongside positive engagement at work.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘We were in that situation where every week we had Sunday night dread'

‘We have to afford them the same flexibility we afford ourselves'

‘I champion people not trying to do it all for themselves. Get the support of an outside qualified person for HR if required'

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    What's next

Our next step is to unlock our ambassador model. Our events will be at park runs, sober raves and festivals they will be upbeat and full of life you will be connecting with people who are full of life having a great time without the use of a poisonous drug.

The ambassador model gives our members the opportunity to create a lifestyle business championing this movement. This can be done either online or offline.

When you go against society and change your relationship with something incredibly ingrained in society you build self-worth and this creates a platform for you to be better across all areas of your life.

Everything began with 10 minutes of headspace every day, practising meditation every day changes everything.

Key business lessons learnt along the way

    - Create a plan before you execute.

    - Getting support people and the operational systems and management in place is transformational.

    - Build a supportive team around you, so you can focus on what you are good at

    - Communicate with your customers about the opportunities and limitations you have Many members want to support and give back. They really understand and bring passion because they have been through the program

    - Be very careful whenever you are sourcing marketing there are way more ways to waste your money than spend it well.

    - Be the change telling people to change doesn't work, you have to lead and be the change.

Alcohol is an access point to drive personal development and a shift to more healthy habits and foster better well-being and happiness.

We build technology that facilitates connection through behaviour change and are driven by the purpose of changing people's lives

Our mission is to empower our members to change the world's relationship with alcohol.

This movement is happening organically, it's moving through me and when it's done with me it will continue on.

I'm the nuclear fire engine that drives this thing on day to day using my passion, ADHD and energy but it will get much bigger than just me.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘We have the consumer part with incredible feedback but the big change comes through our corporate programs'

‘We are doing business for good'

‘In ‘One year no beer' there is a lot of serendipity and that is the higher purpose of what we are trying to achieve a connected society over a common purpose of living a good life we are onto something really big'

    Ruari Fairbairns - Co-Founder One Year No Beer Pt.1 Oct 20, 2019
    Show notes

‘One Year No Beer created a global tribe and facilitated the connection with people who are on the same journey and that's why it's so transformational.

In this fascinating and in-depth interview Gavin is speaking with Ruari Fairbairns Co-Founder of One Year No Beer.

They discuss Ruari's journey and how he chose health over success which ultimately led him

to found One Year No Beer with his business partner Andy.

This is a podcast that explores the ways we connect with each other and the global tribe that Ruari has created to facilitate the connections between people on the same journey, and there is something for everyone in this inspirational interview

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

I chose health over being successful and I think there are many people out there who are scared of making the choice but the reality when I took a break for 90 days was I got much faster, more focused and sharper when working.

One Year No Beer was born from the experiences of myself and my business partner and in the first year we gave away all our content.

It's about an exponential difference over a single choice - do you want to drink yes or no?

The choice over alcohol isn't just tiny it's a polar opposite and that's why you see a massive transformation.

This is not just ‘don't drink' we have created a program that helps you change your relationship with alcohol. We knew when we started it had to be completely different.

We wanted to keep growing and we started the ball rolling with crowdfunding

We then looked for seed investors and were able to raise 1.1 million in 5 weeks

There has been phenomenal growth in a very short amount of time.

We have a big job to do and we have an incredible team pulling out all the stops.

We are all programmed and conditioned through society, peer pressure and social conditioning that alcohol is a positive thing in society.

At the core of what we've created is a behaviour change platform to help people change their relationship with alcohol surrounded by a peer network.

You will connect with people having a great time without needing a poison or a drug.

The ambassador model gives our members the opportunity to create a lifestyle business championing this movement.

It's not about alcohol, it's about getting people to focus on their personal development.

We've got a massive opportunity to make a real impact on the world.

There are 3 main factors in addictive behaviour

Meaning and purpose – there was none as an oil broker but now I could not get more connected.

Environment – I was born on an island but was in a place where I couldn't get to the sea. If you are feeling disconnected from your environment then find small ways to reconnect.

Connection – true connection is when we spend time with loved ones and spending time connecting with other human beings.

One year no beer created a global tribe and facilitated the connection with people who are on the same journey and that why it's so transformational.

The higher purpose we are trying to achieve is a connected society.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I felt so much happier and it was transformational'

‘I have to have noise and distraction; the ADHD brain needs to have chaos in order to find focus'

‘Marketing is about getting someone to see the end result so they can value the piece at the beginning'
