Keep Your Boat Afloat in COVID-19 Times: Marketing Expert Kelly Teasdale on How Your Marketing Messaging Needs to Change Mar 29, 2020
    Show notes

Welcome along to a new mini-series designed to help you steer your business through the uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation: Keep Your Boat Afloat: A Business Survival Guide In COVID-19 Times.

Now might not be the best time to be pushing your product with a hard-sell tactic. People are financially uncertain, and not necessarily in a position to spend on products and services that they may have been circling just a few weeks ago.

Also, by dropping prices and offering huge discounts in a knee-jerk reaction to the Coronavirus pandemic, are we alienating the customers and clients we already have?

It's a difficult balancing act, and here to discuss it is marketing expert extraordinaire, Kelly Teasdale, who tells you how you can engage at the right time, while also making sure you deliver quality and value across the board to clients both old and new.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Your marketing has to change - The first point to consider is that everything has changed. It's not enough to simply go on as we have before. It's a new world, and requires a new strategy.

    • There are three main types of people in the marketing world right now:

      • Fear is causing people to pull a lot of campaigns, on all kinds of scales.

      • Those who are continuing as normal and expecting it to still be effective.

      • Those who are ramping up efforts in a bid to use the situation as an opportunity.

    • Don't stop or pull away from your audience. Don't stop connecting. The worst thing you can do right now is to cease the trajectory you're on. By showing resilience now, you're going to mark yourself out as someone reliable, dependable, and able to deal with a crisis.

    • Review your marketing immediately - Remember that people are very sensitive at the moment. Your marketing should reflect this. It's all about appropriateness and timing.

    • Marketing is a relationship, which means there's input on both sides. Those who are choosing the hard-sell tactic need to remember that no-one is in the market for buying unnecessary items at the moment.

    • Now is a wonderful time to develop brand equity. It's a time to connect, to build your audience, engage as often as possible, and focus not on selling, but on giving whenever possible.

    • It's important to consider that our actions during so sensitive a moment in time may well cause irreparable damage to our brand if not carefully thought out. The very acts of caring and consideration may well be the best marketing tools we can employ right now.

    • Nobody should be downing tools and shutting up shop if they don't have to. We have a responsibility to keep money moving around in the economy if we can. Just remember to be sensitive and appropriate.

    BEST MOMENTS

'The fact is that your marketing has to change'

'Nobody wants a business or a coach who only shows up in the good times'

‘Is this appropriate for the time that we're in?'

    'Sell-sell-sell is just ridiculous'

‘Don't just add noise for noise' sake'

'Now more than ever be human in your marketing'

Keep Your Boat Afloat in Covid 19 Times: Para Olympian Neil Fachie on Mindset Through Set-Backs & Challenging Times Mar 29, 2020
    Show notes

Welcome along to a new mini-series designed to help you steer your business through the uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation: Keep Your Boat Afloat: A Business Survival Guide In COVID-19 Times.

Integral to our physical health is our mental health, and no-one knows more about bolstering the defences of the mind in critical situations than today's guest, Paralympian cyclist Neil Fachie MBE.

Neil is here to share some of the powerful tools and techniques he's picked up on his own journey, that have allowed him to form an impregnable sense of resilience and positivity in the face of adversity.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Neil has, in recent years, made a successful transition into the world of business coaching. It's a world that shares many similarities with high-performance competitive sport, in that it also requires focus, determination and working towards long term goals.
    • After pinning his hopes on competing in the Paralympian Games 2012, Neil was told that his funding was being cut, and that his dreams were essentially being taken away from him. It was as though the world had come crashing down.
    • From his lowest, Neil applied himself completely, finding success in different areas, and refusing to allow his impairment to drag him down. The result of this resilience was that at London 2012, Neil came away with a gold and silver medal, and a newfound sense of self-belief.
    • Neil's greatest success came from adjusting his mind-set, and being flexible enough to keep his eyes on his goals, but finding a new way in which to reach those goals.
    • Even at your lowest points, you will always have strengths. You will always have skills and benefits that outweigh those of others.
    • Developing a healthy mind-set is the practice of listening to our inner monologue, and refining our ability to filter them. By focusing on the positive voice, and less on the negative one, we build mental fortitude.
    • There are five types of self-talk, with only four being beneficial:
      • Calming
      • Instructional
      • Positive motivation
      • Negative motivation
      • Purely negative self-talk is not beneficial, and can serve to bring us down
    • Three word mantras are an effective way of jolting our brains back into focus during trying times. They can help to re-align our mind-set, and set us back on the road towards our aims.
    • One of the key tools Neil uses in order to correct his mind-set, is the visualisation technique. Sport taught Neil the value of visualising goals ahead of time, in order to make achieving them just that much more possible.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I went from being very athletic, to overweight and depressed'

‘I thought “I'm not necessarily done yet”'

‘What are my strengths? What am I good at?'

‘You're putting your brain through the logical process of doing something'

'That stress can be really useful at times'

Keep Your Boat Afloat in Covid 19 Times: Richard Bearman, The British Business Bank on package of support for British Businesses Mar 28, 2020
    Show notes

Welcome along to a new mini-series designed to help you steer your business through the uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation: Keep Your Boat Afloat: A Business Survival Guide In COVID-19 Times.

This episode sees Gavin in conversation with Richard Bearman, the Managing Director of the British Business Bank, who are playing a pivotal role during this particular crisis in providing support and funding measures for businesses through the ground-breaking Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan scheme.

This is an incredibly useful and insightful episode with a key person of influence and value, that will provide business owners with answers surrounding available support in these uncertain times.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The support at the British Business Bank is in good hands, as Richard's experience is vast, and has seen him at the helm of key positions in such institutions as HSBC.
    • The British Business Bank is the government's economic development bank, and is 100% owned by the government, providing support on their behalf. The aim is to improve financial markets for smaller businesses, so that they can operate in a more effective and dynamic way.
    • The British Business Bank is currently acting as the main intermediary between the government and businesses in providing loans and financial support through the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme.
    • The scheme allows businesses to borrow up to £5,000,000 in order to cover overdrafts, asset finance, invoice finance and other expenses.
    • The first route to obtaining funding through the scheme is to approach your bank. If they are not already an accredited member of the scheme, then direct contact can be made through the British Business Bank itself through its website, which will be happy to provide a complete list of partners.
    • If the loan requested is below £250,000, then effectively funds can be provided without the usual securities required.
    • In terms of timing, the best practice is to speak to the bank as early as possible, in order to determine your needs, and to decide whether now is the best time to apply, as the scheme will certainly be overwhelmed to begin with.
    • Through any time of change, and despite tragedy and drastic changes in the business world, innovation and creativity will always flourish. People will think of business operations in new and exciting ways, and we will come out of this stronger and more capable of defeating anything similar in years and decades to come.
    • The most forward-thinking in business are already planning how best to capitalise on the return to normality when it arrives. Plan to be on the front foot, instead of waiting to be reactionary

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Our scheme is very much directed towards helping businesses in this time of crisis'

‘We're trying to turn what may be a “no” into a “yes”'

‘Keep the communication open. Keep talking to the bank'

'There will be innovation. There will be creativity'

'The small kindnesses will count for a lot when we're on the other side of this'

Keep Your Boat Afloat in Covid 19 Times: Jonathan Hemus, Crisis Management Specialist Mar 27, 2020
    Show notes

Welcome along to a new mini-series designed to help you steer your business through the uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation: Keep Your Boat Afloat: A Business Survival Guide In COVID-19 Times.

In the second part of this invaluable series, Gavin talks to Jonathan Hemus of Insignia, a crisis management and communications specialist who's here to discuss the importance of effective planning and pivoting in the now unfamiliar business landscape, where adapting and strategising as quickly as possible have fast become key skills.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Jonathan's drive and focus has been born out of his own dissatisfaction at seeing businesses damage themselves and the interests of stakeholders through poor planning and decision-making.
    • The first mistake businesses make when a crisis occurs, is to jump the gun and start “doing things” without information or resources. Taking a step back at this moment is crucial. Don't jump the gun and start implementing practices without thinking. Patience and thought are imperative.
    • Define your strategic intent as soon as possible - Decide where you want the business to be in six/twelve months' time. A common intent is to emerge from the current situation as quickly and strongly as possible while remaining true to core values, and without jeopardising our true vision.
    • Instead of concentrating your energy on numerous tasks designed to help you in the short term, instead focus efforts on the few core strategies that will benefit you in the long term.
    • Determine which working strategies will work best during a moment of crisis, and focus attention on seeing to it that these areas have the most resources available. For many, this will be ensuring that work can be carried out at home during isolation.
    • Work purposefully as a team, and keep a track of events between yourselves. Implement the systems that will allow you to collectively capture, log and share all elements in order to realise the highest level of efficiency.
    • The real purpose of powerful communication between teams is to ensure that we are collectively managing today's crisis, and not yesterday's crisis.
    • Risk assessment is best done between yourself and a handful of carefully selected team members, instead of on a company-wide scale. This keeps reactionary instincts low, and ensures that only the most pressing of concerns are presented to the team in order to find solutions.
    • It's important to remember that your business relationships, as well as your relationships with your workforce, will be forever impacted by your behaviour during this time. A high priority should be maintaining trust, and a deep sense of empathy with stakeholders.
    • The worst thing any company can do right now is to start making promises they can't keep. Setting realistic expectations, and keeping your customers informed, will mark you out as a reliable voice during this time. Even going so far as to recommend competitors during this period, will make people see that you're about solutions rather than profits.
    • It may seem as though adversity is overwhelming right now, but opportunities are everywhere. We need to remember that despite the odds, our creativity and imagination, both individually and as a team, are there to harness and wield. This is a time for our creativity to thrive and explode in wonderful ways.
    • The world of business will change for the better in countless ways. Practices, products and services will emerge from this crisis that will forever alter the way business works, and which will be founded upon the imagination and ingenuity of visionaries.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I hate to see good businesses damage themselves'

'Thinking is really important in this situation'

'Strategic intent is a unifying force for your management team'

‘You need to have everyone pointing in the same direction, and focussing on the same goals'

‘What does life look like for my customer right now?'

    ‘It's about collaboration over competition'

    ‘Out of crisis comes opportunity'

'There will be silver linings in the enormous cloud we are enduring at this moment'

Keep Your Boat Afloat in Covid 19 Times: Tara Halliday on Staying Out of 'Fight or Flight' Mar 26, 2020
    Show notes

    Bit.ly/keepyourboatafloat

Welcome along to a new mini-series designed to help you steer your business through the uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation.

In the first part of this series, Gavin talks to Tara Halliday, a specialist in helping high-performers cope with impostor syndrome, or the secret feeling that you are somehow a fraud, and the subsequent fear of being found out. It's a condition that affects many in business, especially as they begin to ascend to a higher level.

With many businesses now taking the opportunity to pivot or restructure in the wake of the COVID-19 conditions, there may come a sense that we are somehow unsuited to the new roles being taken. This can lead to two conditions known as “Fight-Or-Flight” and “Freeze”, both of which can amplify our sense of inferiority.

However, as Tara explains, there are always different ways of viewing our skill-sets, and matching them to new conditions. It all begins with adjusting our mind-set, and being brave enough to stake your claim in this new and ever-changing world.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Impostor Syndrome affects more than 70% of high-achievers at some point in their lives. Now that COVID-19 has changed the business landscape, it's expected to affect many more, as roles change and switch within organisations.
    • During the “fight-or-flight” feelings we experience during Impostor Syndrome, our brain patterns alter. The pre-frontal cortex, the part of our brain responsible for decision-making, receives less energy. Princeton University, who conducted a study, found that IQ points could drop considerably during these times.
    • In order to manage the “fight-or-flight” response so common to Impostor Syndrome sufferers, Tara first and foremost advocates reducing stress levels by literally shaking our hands, arms and limbs. This flushes out the stress hormone known as Cortisol.
    • Deep-breathing, and specifically the “box breathing” technique, is also extremely useful for reducing stress, and lowering blood pressure in high-tension situations.
    • “Freeze” affects the body in a different way. It can produce feelings of chill, brain fog, procrastination or partial paralysis. It can also induce a sense of hopelessness, and eventually depression.
    • An effective way of combating the “freeze” response is to start with some breathing, before looking at the task ahead of us and breaking it down into its smaller elements. When this is done, take one element at a time, and work slowly through until complete.
    • In terms of managing long-term anxiety, it's crucial to look for the ways in which connections still exist, and where your business can still operate. Try to focus on positives. By allowing ourselves to give in to the “fight-or-flight” feeling, we are reducing our mental capacity for dealing with growth and problem solving.
    • You are still in control of your schedule. Focus on structuring your day in order to exert a further sense of control on your environment.
    • With children now at home, and work to be done, it's vital that we give them the support and face-to-face time that they will need in order to get through this in their own way. The happier your home is, the more productive you'll all be.
    • Social media can be a necessity, but it can also be a place of fear. It's vital to counter every supposition we find there, with fact. If you can do so, stick to official guidelines, not hearsay. The World Health Organisation is the best and most reliable source of any information.
    • This is a time to focus on our own physical, emotional and mental health. Make sure you sleep well, keep hydrated, exercise regularly and keep a watchful eye on your diet.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘If your IQ has reduced by 13 points, you're not going to make those good decisions'

‘It's like a siren going off in your head'

‘We're communicating to the nervous system that there is no threat here'

    ‘Give yourself permission to stop'

‘It's focusing on the here and now, and on the support that you do have, rather than letting your thought process snowball out of control'

'There's a safe space around the dinner table'

    ‘Resilience is a key word'

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Emotional intelligence is a fluid intelligence that is about getting along with others and communication.

    Improving emotional intelligence

    • You need to begin with self-awareness understanding the way you feel and do what you do.
    • You have to understand your personality style to be able to develop your emotional intelligence.
    • Desire– you have to understand what you want and have the burning desire to get that.
    • Decision– when you make a decision you have to burn your mental bridges – refusing to go back to the way it was before.
    • Determination– you have to have the determination to start and to keep going with things following through to the end.
    • Discipline – you have to be willing to do what is hard. Most people who get what they want get very angry and use it in the right direction to propel them forward.
    • If you want to make a change you have to move out of your comfort zone and change one habit at a time.

    Key pillars of emotional intelligence

    • Self-awareness– why you think and feel the way you do understanding your strengths and weaknesses
    • Self-regulation– being able to manage mental and emotional blockages. You have to learn to manage your emotions and thoughts so that you can continue to achieve.
    • Motivation – people run out of motivation and the energy to reach their goals. You have to be motivated to keep going when people say no often repeatedly
    • Empathy – the ability to read other's emotional makeup. If you can't do this it will result in conflict and you can't have clients.
    • Social regulation– this is the communication if you can't get your message across people won't buy from you.

    BEST MOMENTS

I've never met a successful person who doesn't have goals or a failure that does'

‘As humans, we are motivated both towards what we want (the carrot) and away from what we don't (the stick)'

‘We are very lazy as humans and always looking for an easier way to do something'

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Family businesses have a tendency to exist purely for the benefit of the family itself, or for the shareholders. Often, that can lead to an unfortunate sense of greed, and can affect morale.
    • Donald's philanthropic viewpoint on his company, was that it needed to start caring more. Targets and incentives were leading to bad feeling and selfishness. His first rule in the wake of this, was that everyone needed to care, for the business, for the customer, and for each other.
    • During the banking crisis, Donald made some poor decisions in order to satisfy the demands of shareholders. Service and customer satisfaction suffered as a result, as did profits.
    • A good business discipline is to constantly monitor the cash you have on a daily basis, and ensure that it's working effectively for you.
    • The new directive, in the face of near-disaster, was to focus on customers and people instead of profits, and put the shareholders last.
    • The best way to get through any kind of recession is to conserve cash and watch your margins. While the herd mentality chases growth in the hope that it'll help them survive, keep your hand on your prices and hold your nerve.
    • People will always pay a small premium for quality, good service, and speed. It's a strategy that worked for Rowlinson in the face of defeat. Concentrating on customer service and quality resulted in a staggering rise in profits.
    • By engendering trust with its partners, Rowlinson was easily able to secure the funding required in order to complete their transition to an employee-owned company. Donald credits this trust as the main reason for his company's growth and success.
    • Rowlinson commit to making sure that its lower-paid employees are taken care of as a priority, and the higher-paid employees come last. Along with other benefits, such as pensions, this has created an incredible in-house culture.
    • Employees at Rowlinson are fully involved with the way the company operates, and their rewards, such as profit-shares and holiday allowances, are tailored to the results of customer service response. This has led to an increased level of engagement, and the sense that each person can really make a difference.
    • The areas that business owners need the most help with in order to effect true growth are:
      • Cash confidence
      • Dealing with imposter syndrome
      • Creating a team that people want to be a part of
    • Happiness at work is the most important metric at Rowlinson's. It's a cornerstone of the company's culture, and is far more crucial in terms of determining the suitability of new hires.
    • The future is an incredibly important part of all decisions taken at the business. By providing a happy, inclusive, generous-spirited place to work, Rowlinson have created a place that people will aspire to being a part of for generations to come.
