Keep Your Boat Afloat: Supporting CEOs & MDs Through Challenging Times With Lily Shippen Apr 26, 2020
    Show notes

The COVID-19 outbreak has caused uncertainty across the world, especially in the economic sector, where jobs are being nervously propped up by companies who have no idea when life will return to normal.

But as Gavin and his special co-host, recruitment expert Lily Shippen discuss this week, it's equally as important to consider the wellbeing of CEOs and MDs at this time, who are facing equal, if not greater levels of uncertainty.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • It's important to consider CEOs and MDs when it comes to emergency planning and the impact of quarantine. They have families too, and the pressure facing them from the anxious workforce and stakeholders only adds to that pressure.
    • Most business leaders, who are now being seen as “emergency workers”, have not received the same level of emergency training as those in other vital sectors, such as the NHS and military.
    • Communication is even more important at this time, perhaps even more important than simply setting tasks and providing a workload. Visibility is crucial.
    • This situation has proven that valuable output can be achieved through working at home. We have learned many lessons about where costs can be cut, and how our businesses can thrive more remotely.
    • It is our responsibility as employees to be there for those who are trying to keep the wheels moving. This is remarkable opportunity to prove your worth and to develop and deepen business relationships.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘A good PA can help a punch-drunk MD with the emotional side of this'

‘Visibility of leadership is massively important'

‘We should be thinking about pressing the START button again on the business'

‘Do your best to deliver, deliver, deliver!'

Keep Your Boat Afloat: David Horne on The UK Government Support Packages For Businesses Apr 19, 2020
    Show notes

David Horne is one of the most experienced people in the world when it comes to raising debt funding for businesses, having raised over £100 million through equity funding.

David joins Gavin today to discuss the many government's support packages for businesses, how they're working for companies in need, the benefits and downsides of each, and what they can mean for you.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • If you have rateable business premises, and you get a business rates assessment, so long as your rateable value is less than £15k and you're eligible for rates relief, then you will get a £10k grant from your local authority.
    • On CIBIL loans of up to £250,000, banks can no longer ask for personal guarantees as security, as per the Chancellor's ruling, allowing more businesses to access funding.
    • Take It to The Bank is a service created by David and a team, to help you assemble a pitch-deck that'll give your credit application a much better chance of success.
    • Remember to humanise your application as much as possible. Even comments sections are a great opportunity for you to explain the potential of the business or idea you've created.
    • Time to Pay is a service that HMRC have always used in order to give companies more time when it comes to demands. You will need a convincing argument, but it can be a useful last resort.

    BEST MOMENTS

'For most businesses two hundred and fifty grand will help get them through'

‘Anyone who can come through the other side of this with a good set of suppliers and customers, their core business should still be the same'

‘Remember that you're dealing with a human being'

‘We shouldn't punish people for following the law'

Keep Your Boat Afloat: Carl Gould on Strategies During Economic Times of Winter Apr 16, 2020
    Show notes

Carl Gould is an expert in business growth, having grown and scaled multiple business, before transitioning into becoming a coach, and encouraging others to follow his lead.

In this week's edition of the show, Carl and Gavin hold a thought-provoking discussion on why it's important to zero in on the customers who desperately need your help, the actions and strategies that can help your business through this economic winter, and why building a community now is more important than ever.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The economic seasons are a generational phenomenon, and have played out in the same way throughout history. When we reach a certain time in our levels, our spending and saving priorities change.
    • Every business needs to have an up-sideways-down strategy, meaning that expansion follows market positivity, and contraction follows economic shrinkage.
    • It times of economic winter, the number one strategy to combat uncertainty among humanity, is to seek safety in numbers. This is why we've seen such an explosion of groups in the past weeks.
    • The value of a membership system cannot be overstated at this time. Those who feel as though they have special access to a service unreachable by others, often feel a greater sense of security and belonging.
    • During times of uncertainty, customers always value the experts more. People become far more selective and discerning, and so will gravitate towards those they respect and trust.

    BEST MOMENTS

'We wanted to own stuff. Millennials don't want to own stuff, they just want access to things'

    ‘A world conflict galvanises people'

'Winter is a wonderful time if you're ready for it'

‘If you're under lockdown, then take advantage of this time to regroup and recalibrate'

Keep Your Boat Afloat During COVID 19 Times: Collabcast with Nick Bradley re Business Planning during COVID 19 Times Apr 12, 2020
    Show notes

Gavin talks to fellow podcast and scale-up specialist, Nick Bradley, the host of Scale Up Your Business.

Nick is an expert on planning for your business's future, and while COVID-19 may have put a pause to many business plans for 2020, there are always aspects you can be proactively working on.

It's an engaging, practical conversation that'll give you a multitude of ideas to carry forward into your next business day!

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Now is most certainly a time to be consuming positivity in any form. The news can be informative, but it is also sensationalised, and tends to adhere to an agenda.
    • Instead of focusing on the end point to this, we should be marking our progress incrementally. Measure your journey through this in moments, days, weeks, and not as entire experience.
    • The main risk to your business is not taking care of yourself, and running yourself into the ground. Taking care of ourselves will allow us the energy and clarity to add value at the right time.
    • All bailouts and aid must be repaid eventually, so it is prudent to remain active, and to do our part to bolster business in this time. Be proactive, not complacent.
    • The businesses coping best right now are the ones focussing upon their employees, upping their games in terms of customer service, and looking for the opportunities instead of dwelling on the negatives.

    BEST MOMENTS

    'Slow down to speed up'

‘Mindset is about giving yourself the presence, the clarity and the focus to know what to do, and then take action!'

'This is now is about family, contribution and community'

‘Our actions as employers, suppliers and leaders during this time will define us, and will be remembered'

“We want to emerge through this, not only with our business afloat, but our relationships—with family, with partners, etc.—stronger than when we came into it.” - Gavin

Today on the Business Mastermind Podcast, Gavin wants to focus on how us as citizens, as individuals, and as business leaders can move and help our community during this global health pandemic. This could be an excellent time to think and be open to new strategies and fresh opportunities. Tune in to know more.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • As (business) owners, the company's stockholders rely on you during this difficult time. As much as possible, always keep your boat afloat. Maintain a healthy well-being and mental state.
    • Only choose what you consume on the internet. You can't really think effectively if all you see are negative political news. Lessen the time you scroll through social media.
    • Increase your physical activities, as it can help to not get stressed during these trying times.
    • Give yourself some me-time. Not necessarily spending most of it binge-watching on Netflix, per se. Consider meditation or technology detox, as these might give you the reset you need.
    • You want to aim for stability, even during this crisis. Look at your cash flow. Seek some alternatives. Talk to your suppliers, contractors, etc, how you can minimise issues.

    BEST MOMENTS

    • “You need to be kind to yourself.”
    • “Give yourself a break.”
    • “I'm really keen that outside of this, there's meaning that comes out from this and there are some improvements for the better.”

Keep Your Boat Afloat in COVID-19 Times: Daniel Tolson on Understanding The Emotional Journey we Will go Through During COVID-19 Mar 31, 2020
    Show notes

Welcome along to a new mini-series designed to help you steer your business through the uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation: Keep Your Boat Afloat: A Business Survival Guide In COVID-19 Times.

Having experienced COVID-19 nearto the source, Daniel Tolson, a frequent guest on the Business Mastermind Podcast, is well-versed to relay a message of hope and optimism to everyone here in the UK. In Taiwan, where Daniel is based, life is beginning to go back to normal, albeit with a few changes.

Daniel is here today to let you know that hope is on the way. Having survived much of the outbreak, the light at the end of the tunnel is clearly visible, and his first-hand experience of getting through the COVID-19 pandemic will be a welcome message of optimism for anyone affected by the crisis.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The Taiwanese government implemented strict controls almost immediately, and as a result, masks, sanitiser, and other necessary materials were not just rationed, but distributed by the government itself. This halted the spread of panic-buying, and ensured that materials were available to all.
    • The grief cycle is incredibly important to understand. All of a sudden, the futures we had planned have evaporated, leading to a sense of loss and misplacement.
    • We need to deal with each concurrent stage of the grief cycle as it comes. The five stages are:
      • Denial
      • Anger
      • Blame
      • Depression
      • Acceptance
    • The Five Levels of Maslow's Hierarchy Of Needs are:
      • Survival - Food, nourishment
      • Security - Safety and security
      • Love/Belonging - The need for relationships and a sense of belonging
      • Self-Esteem - Confidence and esteem
      • Self-Actualisation - Becoming everything that we can possibly be
    • Self-actualisation is currently being flipped on its head by COVID-19. Self-made billionaires are suddenly seeing fortunes wiped out, and are reverting to survival needs.
    • For those in need of security, how can you act to ensure your security lasts? Can you bring value to your business in any way? Can you strengthen relationships? Make sure you are a person of high-value.
    • No employer wants to see their people in harm's way. If you're an employee, make sure you give your employer the benefit of the doubt, as in most cases, they will be doing everything they can to make sure you're taken care of.
    • We are designed to survive. This will pass, and we should remain positive. Remember that mere survival right now is completely acceptable, and we'll be better off as a species when it's over. Ask for help if you need it, and don't feel ashamed for focusing on your survival.

Keep Your Boat Afloat in COVID-19 Times- Marianne Page on The Practicalities of Running Your Business From Home(Setting up Your Systems so That You & Your Team Can Work Effectively Remotely in COVID-19).sesx Mar 31, 2020
    Show notes

Welcome along to a new mini-series designed to help you steer your business through the uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation: Keep Your Boat Afloat: A Business Survival Guide In COVID-19 Times.

Gavin talks to systems specialist, Marianne Page, an author, speaker and business consultant, who specialises in helping companies adopt and implement systems in order to improve efficiency and manage change.

With the advent of COVID-19, many businesses are having to quickly adapt their operations in order to work from home, which can present numerous challenges. Marianne joins Gavin to discuss the practical ways in which you can quickly understand and adapt to this new business landscape, and make sure your business is able to operate without disruption, and comes out stronger!

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Marianne has been part of the crisis management team at McDonald's for many years, and so experienced first-hand their many ways of dealing with crises such as Mad Cow's disease, Super-Size Me and McLibel, Marianne gained a unique perspective on how to sail a business successfully through the most debilitating of crisis situations.
    • Business-wide systemisation is a hugely effective way to ensure that operations can continue, even in the event of absence or illness.
    • The first thing to focus on is making sure that our teams have the necessary technology to operate effectively in their homes.
    • Communication is essential at this time. Daily huddles are invaluable right now. Utilise services such as Zoom and Skype to keep your entire team in the loop, and understand that this routine can add to a sense of normality.
    • Managing children and family care is a new and challenging issue for many people. As managers, do try to find a way to be understanding in terms of work time.
    • Revisit your customer journey and examine the ways in which you can enhance and improve the entire experience in everything from telephone calls or website interaction.
    • Now that working from home is the norm, we are seeing that results are being judged in productivity. Gavin and Marianne posit that perhaps this should have been the way to judge success all along.
    • This break in operations is the perfect opportunity to implement systemisation. When work returns to normal, many will need re-training and reintegration. By devising these measures now, we can prepare new and fluid ways to operate at full strength.
    • Encourage team members who may be taking a break from work, to develop new skills that can be used to strengthen the business upon their return. It's a wonderful opportunity to “up-skill” yourself!

    BEST MOMENTS

'We've all been through the initial panic. We need to now settle down and look for the opportunities'

‘You cannot over-communicate in this situation'

‘We've never had more to think than right now'

'Since working from home, they're visibly upping their output'

‘It's a great time to get training and feedback sorted out'
