Addict II Athlete removes the negative stigma of addiction and mental health and creates a foundation of potential and support. Addict to Athlete is a nonprofit team of peers, friends, and family who have a desire to create a new way of life. By knowing an addict, having been affected by addiction, or being in recovery yourselves, Team Addict II Athlete is here to help. We have come together to help one another with the outcome from all angles of addiction using our Erase and Replace Philosophy. Erase negative behaviors by replacing the void left behind with health, service, support system, and recreation. We are here to carry the message of recovery and change the outlook of addiction. Our goal is to spread the message of recovery to the addict and family of the addict who still struggles with addiction and to show that we have discovered a more excellent way to live. Moving from Addict to Athlete, dismisses the old way of thinking that recovery must remain anonymous as you become an Agent of Sobriety and a Champion of recovery. Overtime: Words Matter - Terms to Use and Avoid When Talking About Addiction Mar 29, 2024
    Show notes

Coach Blu and Athletic Director Marissa talk about words to use when addressing addiction and the stigma around addiction and disorders. Stigma is a discrimination against an identifiable group of people, a place, or a nation. Stigma about people with SUD might include inaccurate or unfounded thoughts like they are dangerous, incapable of managing treatment, or at fault for their condition. It is important in adopting "person-centered" language. For example, instead of calling someone "mentally ill," a more respectful, people-first way of phrasing it is to say "a person living with a mental health condition." Words like "addict," "alcoholic," and "abuser" put a strong emphasis on the person rather than the disorder. Our focus should be on the person, not the behavior, disease or disability. Here is a great resource on this great topic. https://nida.nih.gov/nidamed-medical-health-professionals/health-professions-education/words-matter-terms-to-use-avoid-when-talking-about-addiction

Blu also explains what the name Addict II Athlete means and why it's important.

Overtime: Potential for Positive Change Oct 23, 2023
    Show notes

The health consequences of drug abuse can be severe and long-lasting, and can include physical and mental health problems such as heart disease, stroke, liver damage, respiratory problems, cancer, anxiety, depression, and addiction.

When trying to motivate someone to avoid drug abuse, it can be helpful to emphasize the negative effects that drugs can have on their health, relationships, and future goals. It can also be helpful to offer support and resources for them to make positive changes, such as counseling, support groups, or alternative activities to replace drug use.

Staying positive while addressing drug abuse can be challenging, but it's important to focus on the potential for positive change and improvement, both for the individual and their community. Emphasizing the benefits of healthy habits and self-care, such as exercise, meditation, and creative outlets, can provide a positive alternative to drug abuse and encourage a healthier lifestyle.

Brain Chemistry, Your Mood, and Recovery Aug 08, 2022
    Show notes

In this week's episode, Coach Blu and our Athletic Director Marissa deeply dive into the human brain and the hormones that can make addiction recovery challenging. The brain is the most complex organ in the body. This three-pound mass of gray and white matter sits at the center of all human activity—you need it for everything. The brain regulates your body's essential functions, enables you to interpret and respond to everything you experience, and shapes your behavior. In short, your brain is you—everything you think and feel and who you are. Listen as they talk about D.O.S.E., the four chemicals we as humans strive for.

D is for doapmine. Dopamine is a type of neurotransmitter. Your body makes it, and your nervous system uses it to send messages between nerve cells. That's why it's sometimes called a chemical messenger.

Dopamine plays a role in how we feel pleasure. It's a big part of our uniquely human ability to think and plan. It helps us strive, focus, and find things interesting.

O is for oxytocin. In the brain, oxytocin acts as a chemical messenger and has an important role in many human behaviors including sexual arousal, recognition, trust, romantic attachment and mother–infant bonding. As a result, oxytocin has been called the 'love hormone' or 'cuddle chemical'.

S is for serotonin. In the brain, serotonin helps with mood regulation and memory, but it also has important jobs in other parts of the body. In fact, most of the serotonin in your body is found in your gut, not your brain. The intestines produce almost all of the body's serotonin supply, and serotonin is required to promote healthy digestion. In other places in the body, serotonin helps with sleep, sexual function, bone health, and blood clotting.

E is for endorphins. Endorphins are chemicals produced by the body to relieve stress and pain. They work similarly to a class of drugs called opioids. Opioids relieve pain and can produce a feeling of euphoria. They are sometimes prescribed for short-term use after surgery or for pain-relief.
Blu and Marissa will share tips on how to increase these 4 vital chemicals in your daily life so that you can recover even more quickly from substance use disorders or mental health struggles.

One on One with Coach Blu is our weekly call-in show where we answer viewer questions on addiction, recovery mental health, and more.

This week we answer: After years of broken promises, weekend drinking binges, affairs, and lies upon lies, it's time I divorce my husband. Nothing changes and his addiction is out of control. Why do I feel like I'm the bad guy?

After my DUI I stopped drinking. I put my family and job at risk. The only problem is my wife still drinks and I feel like she resents me now. She is emotionally aggressive and it feels like she docent supports my choice. We don't bring up my reasons for avoiding alcohol, and passive-aggressive comments when we have friends over are getting to me.
