OVERTIME: Family Communication Nov 03, 2023
    Show notes

When you are dealing with a loved one's addiction, you may feel helpless and afraid. You may not know how to help them or what to do next. The good news is that there are resources available to you that can help you help your loved one.

Discussing hard subjects with your family. If your loved one has an addiction, it could be difficult for him or her to open up to you about their struggles. However, it is important that they understand how their behavior affects others around them. If they do not seem interested in discussing their problems, try asking questions such as: "How can I help?" or "What do you need from me right now?" By asking questions that start with "I" instead of "you," it will encourage your loved one to open up about their feelings more easily and honestly.

Success early on in battling substance abuse. A person struggling with drug abuse may have trouble getting clean and sober if they have never experienced success in life before. For example, if a person was always told by their parents that they would never amount to anything and had failed at school and at work multiple times throughout their life, then it will be very difficult.

Family members and friends can play an important role in helping those with addiction to recover by: Staying involved in the recovery process. Providing encouragement and support. Helping to set boundaries for the addicted person, such as refusing to allow drug use in the home or car. Helping them get treatment for their mental health issues (if needed). Offering positive feedback when they do well and constructive criticism when they don't.

Today coach Blu interviews Leon Roullard, owner and skydive instructor from Skydive The Wasatch. Leon has been around flying since his first tandem skydive in 1996 and continues to find ways to share his life's passion with all those curious about the magic of flight. Blu and Leon discuss some of the metaphors of skydiving and life to recovery. They talk about spirituality and goals.

Leon was approached a few years ago by one of our recovery coaches about holding an Addict II Athlete event to assist our athletes in erasing negative thoughts and behaviors by facing one of the biggest fears in the world, skydiving, and replacing them with courage, freedom and more. Addict II Athlete has now been jumping for four years with Leon and his team. We have had over 200 individuals jump at Skydive the Wasatch and they all say it is a life changing experience where many let go of negative self talk, thier past behaviors and go away feeling reborn.

When Leon's not skydiving or working on various projects around the hanger you'll find him running, skiing, or flying through the Wasatch with his wife and dog.

This Kid Saved My Life Feb 14, 2022
    Show notes

In this week's podcast Coach Bu talks to Brandon Helmick, a father who stepped up to the plate at a moment's notice. Brandon speaks about how in the depths of his addiction he found out he was a father and his son was abandoned at the hospital right after birth. He recognized the need to sober up and be a dad for this innocent baby boy. Brandon wrote,

"This kid saved my life! Here I am 4 years clean from crack and heroin. I was an active user who lived in my car. Got a call one day that a woman gave birth to a son and left him at the hospital and I was the alleged father. She was also an addict so he was born addicted to heroin. I went to see him at the hospital and I just knew he was mine and he was all alone. I got to hold him. While I was holding him the nurse said he was starting to withdraw and it was time for his morphine. That moment changed my life because for once I wasn't just hurting myself I was hurting an innocent child who depended on me. Long story short I got clean, did what I had to with children's services, and got full custody. Here is us now and I thank God. This kid saved my life." Thank you for sharing your inspirational story Brandon Helmick.
